IMOGEN'S POV
We pulled into the ice cream shop parking lot and Joseph was out of the car before I'd even turned off the engine. He pressed his face against the glass window, studying the flavors like they held the secrets of the universe.
"Chocolate chip cookie dough," he announced when we walked inside. "Two scoops. In a waffle cone."
"Two scoops?" I raised an eyebrow. "That's a lot of sugar before dinner."
"But he's my new dad now," Joseph repeated, pointing at Isaac. "New dads have to say yes to everything. It's another law."
Isaac grinned. "Is that so?"
"Definitely. Tell her."
"I think one and a half scoups is a good compromise," Isaac said, winking at me.
Joseph considered this seriously. "Okay. But the half scoop has to be vanilla."
"Deal."
I watched them negotiate over ice cream toppings and felt something warm spread through my chest. This was what I'd wanted for Joseph. A father figure who would spoil him just enough but still back me up when it mattered.
