Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: First fight

-General-

Two more arrows zipped through the air, finding their marks in the two closest orcs. With guttural groans, their bodies went limp, and they crumpled to the ground, dead.

Glóin the dwarf scrambled to his feet, axe in hand, ready for the fray. But as he looked up, he saw two orcs collapse at his feet. Slightly surprised, he noticed two arrows buried squarely in their brows. He turned his head slightly, giving Aldril a thumbs-up.

"Well done, Aldril, but those orcs were mine!" In his momentary distraction, Glóin failed to notice another orc rapidly approaching, its sword raised.

"Shiss!"

Glóin saw Aldril raise his bow and fire in his direction again, making him flinch. He heard a whimper behind him.

"Uughh."

Turning, he saw an orc standing behind him, sword still held high, an arrow protruding from its eye.

"Don't get distracted, Glóin, that's a rookie mistake," Aldril said with a smirk, continuing to loose arrows at the incoming orcs.

"Damn! Did you just call me a rookie? I'll show you how wrong you are! Come on, you damn orcs!" Annoyed by Aldril's remark, Glóin roared and charged at the orcs without a second thought. He reached the first orc, raised his axe, and with immense force, buried it deep in the creature's shoulder. The orc shrieked in agony before dying. Without pausing, Glóin wrenched the axe free and spun, striking down another orc approaching his left flank.

"Shiss!"

Another arrow flew, striking a warg that was rapidly closing in on Aldril. The warg's death sent its rider tumbling, crushed by its weight.

Aldril's exceptional performance caught the attention of the orc scouting team's leader. This human was proving a persistent nuisance, having already decimated many of his group. "To the human! Kill the human!" he bellowed.

At his shout, a dozen or so wargs burst from the forest, charging towards the camp—a definite surprise. The wargs hadn't attacked initially because the orcs had planned a silent ambush. Being too noisy, the wargs had been left in the forest while the orcs crept forward. Now that the fight had begun and the dwarves were alerted, there was no need for a stealth attack, so the fierce direwolves joined the fray. Following their leader's command, the wargs changed trajectory, aiming straight for Aldril.

"Shiss, shiss, shiss!"

Three arrows were fired in rapid succession, each felling a warg. Seeing them rapidly approaching, Aldril slung his bow, quickly drew his sword, and braced for the attack.

"Come, you damned bastards!"

This would be the first time he tested the silver sword given by the system, and where he would apply the Wolf School sword style that Witchers learn to fight monsters. Just as he drew his sword, a warg leaped and lunged at him. He swiftly dodged to the right, evading its attack. After dodging, he nimbly swung the sword, and with a silver flash illuminated by the moonlight, the orc rider's head was effortlessly severed, a testament to the sword's terrifying edge. Without time to marvel at the ease of the cut, he plunged the sword into the head of the warg that had turned to attack him.

Before he could catch his breath, another warg leaped at him. This time, Aldril traced a horizontal arc, nearly cleaving the direwolf in two.

"Swish!"

As it was almost split, the warg's belly burst open, spewing its entrails. Aldril took a step back, narrowly avoiding them.

"Yuck!" Aldril exclaimed, decapitating the orc riding the direwolf that now lay at his feet. As he did, another orc appeared behind him, swinging its sword with a shout. Aldril raised his sword, and the blades clashed.

"Clink!"

They struggled for a few seconds before Aldril forcefully flung the orc backward and plunged his sword into its stomach, killing another. At that moment, two riderless wargs rushed towards him.

...

-Aldril-

I was certainly surprised by how effective this sword was. It allowed me to cut through these wolves and orcs with remarkable ease, like a hot knife through butter. As I watched two more wargs charge at me, I felt a flicker of nervousness, but also an exhilarating thrill.

"Two against one, a fair fight, you damn beasts," I muttered, bracing for the inevitable encounter. I had no doubt that with their massive size, sharp claws, and long fangs, these wargs could easily kill me if I was careless. But there was no time to worry now; these bastards were already upon me. With a surge of excitement, I advanced towards them.

"Come on, you bastards!"

Taking a chance, I charged forward, gripping my sword with both hands, and swung with all my might at the first direwolf.

"Swish!"

With my strength and the sword's keen edge, the first warg's head was severed. Its body twitched with muscle memory before finally dying. After decapitating it, I turned my attention to the other warg, which had leaped to attack me.

Preparing to dodge, a bright light shot out from behind me, sending the warg flying backwards, where it lay motionless.

"Boom!"

Turning, I saw Gandalf, his staff still glowing with a slowly dimming white light from the spell he'd cast.

"Damn it, Gandalf, you have to teach me how to do that!" I said, walking up to him and standing by his side. The movies certainly didn't do him justice; from the little I'd seen in this fight, he was incredibly skilled with both his sword and staff, easily dispatching orcs.

"Haha, perhaps I will teach you," he replied, as we prepared to face the dozens of orcs now swarming towards us. I couldn't understand how so many had appeared; a scouting party wouldn't be this large, would it?

Gandalf held a longsword in one hand and his staff in the other, while I gripped my silver sword with both hands.

"GRRAAAAHHHH!"

The orcs rushed at us with a roar. Gandalf skewered one orc with his sword and struck another with his staff, twisting its head 180 degrees. The precision and power of his movements were astounding, showcasing the skill of an experienced warrior. I, on the other hand, decapitated another orc with a single fluid motion, blood splattering the air around me. Moving my sword swiftly, I delivered a diagonal slash to another enemy, shattering its armor with the force of my blow.

The orcs began to surround us, their grunts the only sounds we heard. Gandalf and I positioned ourselves back-to-back, slowly circling as we engaged our enemies. Our movements were perfectly synchronized, a deadly dance that showed how well-coordinated we were, as if we had fought countless battles together.

Gandalf cast a spell with his staff, a blinding blast of light that sent several orcs flying. Taking advantage of the distraction, I advanced with a series of quick strikes, slashing and stabbing at any orc that came too close. One orc tried to attack me from behind, but Gandalf, with a graceful twist, brought it down with a swipe of his staff before it could reach me.

"Left!" I shouted, throwing one of my daggers towards an orc that planned to attack Gandalf from the right. Following my warning, Gandalf swung his sword and intercepted the orc attempting a sneak attack; I watched as their blades clashed.

"Clink!"

After the clash, Gandalf, with great technique, managed to disarm the orc before finally stabbing it.

The battle continued for a while. Gandalf and I, a deadly combination, seemed invincible. Every orc that fell at our feet was a testament to our skill. Seeing their numbers significantly reduced, the orcs chose to retreat. But we wouldn't let them escape. Drawing my bow, I began to fire arrow after arrow. I didn't know when Kili began to fire his bow at the fleeing orcs, but unfortunately, I ran out of arrows and couldn't kill them all.

"Two got away," I said in frustration, turning to Gandalf, only to be met with surprised looks from the dwarves. Gandalf and I stood in the middle of a circle, more than a dozen dead orcs strewn around us.

"Never make them angry," I heard Fili say in a low voice.
