Bright lightning streaked across the sky, illuminating the surroundings with blinding flashes.
Flying Pokémon and their trainers who dared approach were knocked down without exception.
Who would be foolish enough to fly during a thunderstorm? Chris thought to himself.
From beginning to end, Chris had never imagined that a single Surf move could defeat opponents so quickly.
Surf was indeed powerful with its wide area of effect, but its attack speed wasn't particularly fast. While effective in standard battles, it was easy for trainers riding Flying Pokémon to avoid in open-field combat, especially in non-water areas.
That's why Chris had prepared a backup plan. Or rather, a carefully calculated strategy.
First, force them to fly upward. Then, unleash an unavoidable Thunder attack!
After all, what kind of rainstorm would it be without Thunder?
Behind Chris stood his lineup of Pokémon: Aggron, Haunter, and Tyranitar. Though none were Electric-types, this didn't prevent him from executing an electric assault.
Of course, members of the Asuka could have chosen to use Dig to escape underground, despite how humiliating that might be for an organization that called itself the "Asuka group."[T/N: Asuka means flying or something like that.]
But even if they had tried, the outcome would only have been worse.
The ever-cautious Chris had sent his Garchomp to patrol beneath the surface.
If anyone dared venture underground, his Garchomp would show them the true meaning of savagery!
The Asuka group was destined to be wiped out!
"BANG!" A brilliant white light pierced through Greninja's waves. In the next second, a Noivern wrapped in dark green energy shot out and flew straight into the distance.
Trying to escape using Dragon Rush?
Chris didn't bother stopping it.
But within seconds, Noivern and its trainer were suddenly yanked back by a blood-red tail that descended from above.
It was Red Gyarados's Dragon Tail!
The sky offered no escape. Just as Garchomp had secured the ground, Chris had made sure the skies were covered too. The Red Gyarados was his advance preparation.
The trainer tried desperately to hold onto Noivern, not wanting to be thrown off, but the Dragon/Flying-type had already fallen unconscious.
Unfortunately for Noivern, being a Dragon-type meant taking double damage from Dragon-type moves. With Gyarados's attack power, any Dragon-type of similar level would be knocked out instantly, unless it was a Steel-type like Dialga.
"Braviary!" the trainer shouted, reaching for another Poké Ball.
But suddenly, he found himself face-to-face with an unusual Gardevoir.
This Gardevoir had elegant, beautiful blue hair and a night-colored flowing dress. It stared at him with cold eyes—beautiful yet haunting.
A... Mega Shiny Gardevoir?!
Before the trainer could recall where he'd seen a Mega Shiny Gardevoir before, his eyelids grew heavy. His entire body descended rapidly as if sinking into quicksand, his consciousness fading without a trace.
In the next moment, Mega Gardevoir lifted his unconscious form with Psychic and tossed him at Chris's feet.
"So this is Eagle, the leader of Team Asuka? He's barely as strong as a Gym Trainer. Why was he defeated so easily?" Chris wondered aloud.
Is that all there was to it?
Stephen rushed over, witnessing Mega Gardevoir throwing Eagle in front of Chris and hearing Chris's perplexed comment.
He was speechless with surprise.
"Captain, I've finished with my task," Chris reported with an innocent expression.
Stephen, Eliana, and Freya struggled to keep their mouths from twitching in disbelief.
Is that what Chris called "handling the situation"?
He had created a trap with Surf to create an inescapable siege. Anyone watching might have thought he was trying to destroy the world, not just capture a small group of criminals.
Pokémon had a special protection mechanism—no matter how severe their injuries, they would only lose their fighting capability temporarily. Only if attacked again while in that state would they truly be at risk.
Humans, however, struck by Thunder moves at such a height...
If they weren't electrocuted to death, the fall would certainly kill them.
"It doesn't matter. They deserved their fate. What's important is that we captured Eagle," Stephen said, stepping forward to confirm the identity of the man lying on the ground. It was indeed Eagle.
In Pokémon Investigator operations, using Pokémon to eliminate criminals was commonplace. As long as the primary target survived, the mission could be considered a success.
Still... Stephen couldn't help but look at his junior with newfound respect.
Dispatching an entire group without showing any discomfort was impressive.
Regarding this, Chris explained, "I didn't actually see them being defeated very clearly, so... it's like I only heard about it happening rather than witnessing it. I don't feel much about it."
"Team, withdraw!" Stephen commanded through his headset.
The members of the other two teams raised mental question marks.
Weren't they supposed to surround and support Chris after his attack?
Why the sudden order to withdraw?
Team members exchanged glances but stopped their advance.
Then Stephen's explanation came through the headset:
"Except for their leader Eagle, everyone in Team Asuka has been eliminated by Chris. We must withdraw immediately and head to the nearest city for reinforcements!"
Only then did everyone understand, and they began to assemble accordingly.
During the assembly, several people stared at Chris with astonished expressions.
Olivia in particular looked at him as though she was seeing a stranger. Although she knew Chris was now a Gym Trainer, she hadn't actually watched the video of his battle against Keaton. Her impression of him was still of the trainer she'd met when she used her Gyarados to bring him to the Dragon's Nest in China. If not for the calendar clearly showing today's date, she would have thought more than ten years had passed.
Chris interpreted these strange looks as admiration.
This seemed confirmed when Eliana silently handed him a note with the word "Amazing!" written on it.
"That's right, I am a Gym Trainer," Chris said proudly.
But Eliana immediately handed him another note: "I'm talking about your Mega Shiny Gardevoir."
"Is that because I've trained it well?" Chris sniffed.
After everyone had assembled, Stephen confiscated all of Eagle's Pokémon, tied him up securely, and had a Psychic-type Pokémon continue to keep him hypnotized.
After confirming everything was in order, they began their journey back.
However, this surprise attack against Team Asuka was only the beginning.
