Chapter 228 - Chapter 228: The Possibility of Dynamax at the Tournament

"That location... it's a bit too close..."

The incident occurred not far away, not even inside the Pokemon DayCare area, but still close enough.

Whether out of the adventurous spirit of a Trainer, or the need to protect his own property from harm, Paul didn't hesitate for a moment and made his move.

"Electivire, Garchomp, Ninetales, Froslass, Metagross, Hisuian Samurott—come with me. The rest of you, continue training."

In the blink of an eye, Paul jumped onto Metagross, calling for his flying Pokémon to follow him.

"Viree~"

Led by Electivire, Paul's Pokémon quickly followed his lead and flew toward the location of the incident.

The sound of the wind howling past his ears, it wasn't long before Paul arrived near the area engulfed in a strange energy.

Just as Paul had expected, the location was indeed near the Pokemon DayCare.

However, when he looked at the scene, it wasn't what he had anticipated. No evil organizations or chaotic totem disturbances.

The Pokémon causing trouble were all wild Pokémon that were normally quite docile.

But today, these normally gentle creatures were different; they had grown to an enormous size.

Each one stood several dozen meters tall. While their strength wasn't clear, just seeing such a large group standing there would send a chill down anyone's spine.

Most seriously, these enlarged Pokémon had red eyes, a clear indication they were struggling to control the immense power they had gained, losing their rationality in the process.

"Dynamax? I didn't expect that the energy here was so abundant."

Paul immediately recognized the situation.

Ever since that night he returned from the Hisui region, when the power of Eternatus unleashed a global energy wave, places where Dynamaxing was possible had started to appear around the world, to varying degrees.

Of course, most of these occurrences were brief, as the energy wasn't strong enough to last long.

But now, in the area near his own home, the energy was clearly abundant enough to cause so many wild Pokémon to enlarge and go out of control.

As soon as Paul arrived, the red-eyed Pokémon locked onto him as their target, and with their massive bodies, they charged toward him.

Dynamax moves?

"Don't need too much power, just attack."

Paul waved his hand, signaling his Pokémon to attack.

With a brief series of strikes, the oversized Pokémon were quickly forced back into their normal size and fell to the ground, defeated without much resistance.

Surveying the scene of the fallen Pokémon, Paul pulled out his Dynamax Band from his pocket, putting it on as he looked at his Pokémon and asked,

"Who wants to try this new power?"

"Viree~"

Electivire as always, took the lead, flying up to Paul and pounding its chest in confidence, while looking around at the other Pokémon with a friendly gaze.

Due to their strong bond with Electivire, the other Pokémon did not compete for the chance to try the power.

"Alright then, come on."

Paul glanced over the Dynamax Band before recalling Electivire back into its Poké Ball. The power within the band resonated with the surrounding energy.

As the energy from the band and the surrounding area synchronized, the power within the band was transferred into the Poké Ball, causing it to glow with purple light as Electivire grew to an enormous size.

However, as soon as it stopped growing, Paul tossed the Poké Ball out with force.

"Vi...ree~"

In a flash of white light, Electivire's body rapidly grew in size before landing with a tremendous impact, shaking the ground beneath it.

Above its Dynamaxed form, three grey-red clouds materialized, resonating with the strange energy in the sky, while a dim red glow surrounded it, creating an eerie atmosphere.

On the ground, the little Pokémon that had just been defeated by Paul's team suddenly woke up. Upon seeing the Dynamaxed Electivire, they immediately fled, disappearing into the nearby forest.

"How does it feel?"

Paul asked.

"Viree~"

Electivire clenched its fist, feeling an overwhelming strength inside. It was far more powerful than before it had grown.

However... its massive form felt a bit too oppressive, and it struggled to move freely.

Trying to float with its Electromagnetic Levitation, it found its speed significantly reduced.

Clearly, Dynamaxing enhanced power and stamina, but at the cost of speed and agility—it's a terrifying trade-off.

"Viree~"

Feeling the power within, Electivire aimed toward the sky, releasing a powerful Thunderbolt, causing the skies to crackle with electric energy. The attack was impressive, far more powerful than anything before.

"Try using your new power to execute a move." Paul instructed.

In reality, Pokémon who undergo Dynamaxing can indeed use their regular moves, as evidenced by the first instance of Pikachu's Dynamax form in the anime.

When Pikachu first evolved into its Dynamax form, it struggled with Tail Whip, only to be immediately knocked out.

This proved that Dynamaxing, while powerful, is most effective when using Dynamax-exclusive moves.

It's not that regular moves can't be used, but most fast-moving Pokémon are better off without the Dynamax transformation.

"Viree~"

Electivire, feeling the immense power within, let out a fierce roar. In an instant, the darkened skies above were filled with swirling winds and clouds. A massive bolt of lightning struck down, hitting a distant target with terrifying precision.

When the storm's fury subsided, a massive crater had formed at the center of the hill.

A burned scent hung in the air, and within a radius of several hundred meters, an electrified field crackled with arcs of lightning. Anyone standing within it could feel the terrifying voltage pulsing through the ground, their bodies tingling from the residual current.

"Not bad for power." Paul observed. "Now try a move of a different type."

For the first time, Paul had gained a clear instinctive sense of what Max Moves were capable of.

Following his command, Electivire channeled the move Brick Break to unleash Max Knuckle. A colossal energy fist materialized above the same hill and came crashing down.

The earth quaked violently. When the dust settled, the hill's center had been completely smashed into a deep pit.

After a brief pause to focus, Electivire switched tactics. This time, it used Psychic as the base to trigger Max Mindstorm.

A massive sphere of psychic energy gathered above its head. Then a terrifying beam of light burst forth and slammed into the hilltop, completely leveling the terrain.

After using all three Max Moves, Electivire felt the Dynamax energy within its body finally dissipate. Its form quickly shrank back to normal.

"How does it feel?"

As Electivire floated back down in front of him, Paul asked the question. The other Pokémon nearby all looked eagerly.

"Viree~"

Electivire nodded, then shook its head.

It acknowledged the raw power of Dynamax. That much was undeniable.

But was that power worth sacrificing its greatest asset—its speed, honed through relentless training with electricity, electromagnetism, and magnetic field manipulation? To Electivire, the answer was no.

No matter how impressive Dynamax might be, losing its mobility turned it into a sitting target. Dodging enemy attacks became nearly impossible in that oversized form.

Without Dynamax, as long as it could maintain its incredible speed, most moves could be evaded. It could rush the opponent in the time it would take to use a Max Move—and land a flurry of punches, capped off with a Brick Break combo. So why bother with the transformation?

More importantly, Electivire took pride in overwhelming its opponents with speed, dominating them with fists, not flashy transformations.

Dynamax? Unless absolutely necessary, it had no intention of using such a sluggish form in real battle.

After hearing Electivire's answer, most of the other Pokémon around felt a little disheartened. Like Electivire, many of them specialized in speed-based combat—turning into giant, lumbering targets didn't suit them at all.

Metagross, standing beneath Paul, didn't seem too troubled. It knew it had a shot at Mega Evolution in the future. One more system, one more option—it wasn't a big deal.

Garchomp, on the other hand, was the least concerned of all.

With frequent use of its Mega form, Garchomp had begun to sense that one day, it could master the power of Mega Evolution entirely through its own innate strength and bloodline.

A future where it could Mega Evolve without Paul… without even needing a Mega Stone.

If it could achieve that on one's own Mega Evolution—why would it need Dynamax at all?

"Hey, Trainer—can you come down for a moment?"

A voice called from below. Paul looked down and saw Officer Jenny arriving on an Arcanine.

"We'll try again another time. Electivire, bring the others back."

At this point, the energy in the Dynamax Band had been depleted, rendering Dynamaxing temporarily unavailable. Paul had Electivire gather the other Pokémon and return them to their Poké Balls, then descended to the ground atop Metagross.

"Good day, Officer Jenny."

Paul gave a subtle nod as he hopped down from Metagross.

"So it's you, Paul. What happened here?"

Officer Jenny, a well-known figure in Veilstone City and familiar with Paul by reputation, greeted him with a slight smile.

"There were group of Pokémons here have Dynamaxed. I've already taken care of it."

Paul delivered the explanation in his usual concise manner.

"A group of Pokémons?! Are you sure?"

Officer Jenny pressed for confirmation.

Given the circumstances, a random Dynamax occurrence wasn't out of the question—but multiple Pokémon transforming at once? That was definitely abnormal.

"It's confirmed."

"I see… In that case, this site might be the first stable Dynamax energy zone ever discovered in Sinnoh. I need to report this to the League immediately."

Officer Jenny's expression turned serious. She pulled out her communicator and contacted her superiors without delay.

Once the report was made and initial confirmation procedures were complete, Paul mounted Metagross once more and flew back toward the Day Care.

Even in Galar, not all locations allow for Dynamaxing. Aside from rare cases of energy leakage, Pokémon generally need to be near an active Power Spot to Dynamax at all.

That's why most major stadiums in Galar were built directly atop these Power Spots.

Now that a Power Spot had been discovered near Veilstone City, its geographical significance couldn't be understated. With proper development, it wouldn't be surprising if the Sinnoh League's Lily of the Valley Conference ended up rebranded as the Veilstone Conference in a few years!

As for why this Power Spot existed here in the first place?

Paul suspected it might have something to do with Veilstone City's famed meteorite shrine.

The meteorites that resonated with the Spear Key—maybe they were the key factor behind it all.
