Chapter 29 - chapter 29

When Max first found out about Grace's marriage to Adrian, a wave of frustration and disbelief hit him like a tidal wave. His stomach churned with the heaviness of the news, and for a moment, it felt like everything he had worked for—the sacrifices, the distance, the years spent trying to build himself into the man he wanted to be—had been for nothing.

He had imagined the day he would return to Grace a thousand times. He would confess everything, tell her how he felt, and they would finally be together. But now, standing on the outside of her life, that dream seemed impossible. Grace, the one person he had always cared about, had moved on without him, made a life for herself with someone else.

Max's mind raced. How could I have been so blind? He had spent years convincing himself that there was always time, that there would be a right moment to come back for her. But now, he could only think of Adrian—the man who had taken the place he had always dreamed of holding. A sharp pang of jealousy twisted in his chest as he imagined Adrian by her side, sharing the life that he had wanted to build with her. He clenched his fists, the frustration mounting with every passing second. I waited too long. I've lost her. It's over.

For days, Max grappled with the idea, the weight of her marriage settling heavily on his shoulders. He was tempted to leave town, to retreat back into the life he had built for himself, but something stopped him. Something deep within told him to hold on, to give it a little more time.

That was when the unexpected happened. Max learned that Adrian and Grace weren't exactly living in blissful marital harmony. In fact, it seemed like their relationship was on shaky ground, plagued by tension and distance. The news came from a friend of Grace's, someone who had no idea of the history between Max and Grace. But it was enough. Max didn't know how, or why, but he felt a flicker of hope stir in his chest. Maybe it's not over. Maybe this isn't as bad as I thought.

At first, he didn't want to believe it. He didn't want to let himself get excited by the possibility that there might still be a chance for him with Grace. After all, she was married, and it seemed wrong to hope for something when she had made a commitment to someone else. But as the weeks passed, he started to pay more attention to the signs. Grace was distant, her conversations were colder when she spoke about Adrian, and there was an unmistakable sadness in her eyes that Max recognized all too well. He had seen that sadness in her before, the same one that had marked their conversations late into the night back in college. It was the kind of sadness that came from feeling trapped, from giving too much and getting too little in return.

Max began to feel a strange sense of relief, though he hated himself for it. She's not happy with him, he thought. She's not in love with him. She might be stuck, but she's not content.

A part of Max was angry. Angry that Grace had been trapped in this relationship. Angry that she had settled for less than she deserved. But another part of him, the part that had always loved her, couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope. If Adrian wasn't the man Grace needed, maybe he still had a chance. Maybe all those years of waiting and working for the right moment hadn't been in vain. Maybe, just maybe, the universe was giving him one last shot at the love he had always wanted.

Max knew he had to be careful. He couldn't rush in and make things worse. Grace had already been through so much, and he didn't want to be the one to complicate her life further. But he couldn't ignore the pull he still felt toward her, the connection they shared that never truly faded.

And so, with a renewed sense of purpose, Max decided to wait. Wait for the right moment, wait for the right time to talk to Grace, to let her know he was there for her, that he was ready to be the person she needed. He would respect her space, but he couldn't ignore the truth any longer: there was still a chance for them, and he was willing to fight for it.

Grace deserved happiness, and Max was determined to be the one to give it to her, even if it meant facing the uncertainties of her troubled marriage. He wasn't going to give up on her—not now, not when it felt like destiny was finally giving him the chance he had always hoped for.

Max's resolve had hardened into something unshakeable. He was done waiting. He had spent years building a life, all with the quiet intention that one day, when the time was right, he would return for Grace. He had left, telling himself it was for her—so he could be someone worthy of her. But now that he had returned, he wasn't going to stand by and watch her drift through a marriage that had clearly turned cold. Max could no longer be the observer from afar.

He had made the decision to get closer to her. To be there for Grace in the way he knew she needed—steadfast, patient, and unwavering. Every subtle gesture, every word of comfort, every moment he could show her he was by her side, he took. But deep down, Max knew that being close to her wasn't enough. He had to make her realize that he wasn't just another person in the background. He was the person who had always understood her, the person who had always been there, even when she didn't know it. The person who wanted to be more than just a friend.

Max had become a fixture in Grace's life, not in an intrusive way, but in a way that made her start to notice him again. Every time he caught wind of something that was troubling her, he was there—whether it was a stressful situation at work, a sleepless night, or just a quiet moment when she seemed withdrawn, he found a way to be the one she turned to. Slowly, but surely, he began to fill the spaces Adrian had left empty.

He wasn't just offering her a shoulder to lean on; Max was offering her the kind of warmth and sincerity Adrian hadn't been able to give. He didn't press her for answers, didn't force her to open up before she was ready, but he was there with his quiet, steady presence, letting her know that she didn't have to carry her burdens alone. There was something about Max's calm and genuine care that seemed to draw Grace in, like a soft light guiding her through the darkness.

And with every passing day, Max watched her slowly begin to trust him again. Her smiles became more frequent, her eyes lighter when she spoke to him, and for the first time in years, he saw that familiar spark of connection between them that had once burned so brightly in their college days.

It wasn't just his actions that were convincing her—Max was pouring his heart into every word he spoke, every moment they shared. He didn't just say the right things to comfort her; he meant every word, and that sincerity was something Grace couldn't easily ignore. She had always known that Max was a man of character, but now, in the face of her crumbling marriage, she was starting to see him in a new light.

Max had been watching the cracks in her marriage for months, waiting for the right moment to make his feelings known, but he wasn't foolish. He wasn't going to throw himself at her in her time of vulnerability. He knew that Grace needed time and space to process everything she was feeling. What he was offering her now was something more subtle but far more lasting—his unwavering support.

As he listened to her talk about the growing distance between her and Adrian, Max felt a pang of something deeper inside. It hurt him to see her so defeated, but he couldn't help but feel a sense of relief as well. If she was unhappy, it meant there was a chance for him. If she needed someone to stand beside her, he was there.

Max had made up his mind. He wouldn't rush her. He wouldn't pressure her into making a decision. But he would give her everything he had—his heart, his time, his unwavering loyalty—and he hoped, with every fiber of his being, that she would see it. That she would finally see that he had always been there, waiting for her. That he would be the one who could offer her everything Adrian couldn't.

He would wait until she was ready, but he was done being in the background. Max was here for Grace—no matter what it took, no matter the cost—and this time, he wasn't going to let her slip away without telling her the truth.

The truth is that he had never stopped loving her.
