Chapter 99 - Journey to Power - 8

Days bled into weeks, each one a testament to Kaiser's relentless pursuit of mastery. His training sessions with Adriel had become a grueling ritual, a dance of steel that always ended in a draw. Kaiser's Verse 1, "Wind Slices the Sword," proved devastating in close-quarters combat, its ethereal blade striking with uncanny precision. Yet, Adriel's almost inhuman ability to ignore pain and relentlessly press his attacks turned every potential victory into a stalemate. It was a bizarre, yet effective, partnership, pushing both swordsmen to their absolute limits.

Kaiser also observed the other members of their impromptu group. Sentry remained an enigma, a silent observer who never seemed to train, his presence a quiet constant on the sidelines. Hella, on the other hand, trained with an almost ferocious intensity, her every glance towards Kaiser charged with a dangerous, unspoken challenge. He could feel her animosity, a simmering resentment that promised a confrontation.

One day, after an particularly intense sparring session with Adriel, Kaiser, sweat-soaked and weary, sat down to catch his breath. Adriel, equally exhausted but still radiating his peculiar, manic energy, flopped down beside him. Sentry, as usual, positioned himself slightly apart, observing them with his quiet intensity.

"Looks like I angered Hella," Kaiser mused aloud, a faint smile playing on his lips. "I wonder what will happen."

Adriel scoffed, a wild glint in his eyes. "Let her come with her tail between her legs! Then she'll know my strength!"

Sentry, ever the pragmatist, interjected, "I don't think that's going to happen, Adriel."

"Or that might happen if we play our cards well," Kaiser countered, his mind already strategizing. "But first, we need to choose a leader."

Adriel puffed out his chest. "Who is better to lead than me?"

Kaiser, sensing an opportunity to test the waters, agreed. "Okay then, you're the leader."

"Yeah, I am after all—" Adriel began, his chest swelling with pride, but he was abruptly cut off by Sentry.

"Well, actually, there's a problem," Sentry stated, his voice calm, yet firm.

Kaiser, intrigued, asked, "What's the problem with Adriel being a leader?"

Sentry's gaze was direct. "We'll be losing our heavy hitter on the battle. After all, if he's the leader, he'll have to watch from the sidelines. And even if a leader is very great, if his subordinates are fools, the leader couldn't do anything. How about you let Kaiser lead and fight instead? Please, none of us are as strong as you."

Adriel, surprisingly, seemed to consider this. "Yeah, I am the best leader, but if I lead, you would lose your best fighter. And additionally, I don't want to lead a losing team, so I will let Kaiser be the leader." His words, though still tinged with arrogance, held a surprising flicker of self-awareness.

Kaiser, a subtle unease settling in his stomach, spoke. "Adriel, before we go, I have something to do. Can you wait? And Sentry, come with me."

As Kaiser and Sentry walked to a more secluded part of the training grounds, Kaiser turned to Sentry, his voice low. "Come on, Sentry, was that really necessary? Adriel is fit to lead, but I'm not. I'm more of a soldier than a leader."

Sentry's expression remained impassive. "Adriel is not fit to lead. He is very prideful, and pride brings fall. I'm telling you to lead because you are the only sane person in our team."

"You are sane too," Kaiser argued, "can't you lead?"

"I might look sane," Sentry replied, a cryptic smile touching his lips, "but in reality, I am insane. You are the only person to lead. Now, lead our team."

Kaiser sighed, a sense of resignation settling over him. "We will lose under my leadership."

"If that's so, fine," Sentry said, his conviction unwavering. "However, I'm still choosing you."

With Sentry's unwavering conviction settling the matter, Kaiser and Sentry returned to Adriel, who was impatiently tapping his foot. Kaiser simply told him to follow, and together, the three of them made their way towards Hella, who was still training with furious intensity, her movements sharp and precise.

Kaiser stopped a respectful distance from Hella. "Hella," he called out, his voice clear and firm, "I challenge you to a one-on-one fight. If you win, you can do whatever you want. However, if we win, you have to join my team."

Hella paused her training, turning to face him, a maniacal laugh bubbling up from her throat. "I can do whatever I want! I don't need permission from you!" With a furious snarl, she charged, her sword a blur of motion.

Kaiser, anticipating her attack, adopted a defensive stance, his sword expertly deflecting her blows. As her attacks rained down, he delivered a calculated taunt. "Adriel is way better than you!"

Hella's eyes blazed with renewed fury. Her attacks became a rapid succession of slashes, a whirlwind of steel aimed at Kaiser, who simply continued to defend, his movements economical and precise. He maintained his defensive posture, observing her, studying her every move.

Sentry, watching from the sidelines, finally broke his silence. "At this rate, he would lose," he remarked, his voice surprisingly calm.

Adriel scoffed. "What do you mean he would win at this rate? You don't know anything about swordsmanship!"

"No," Sentry simply stated.

"So, how did you come in?" Adriel pressed, genuinely curious.

"Because I am insane," Sentry replied, his expression unreadable.

As Hella continued her relentless assault, Kaiser, despite the apparent pressure, was not simply defending. He was studying. He was analyzing Hella's patterns, her tells, the subtle shifts in her stance. Just as he felt he had gathered enough information, Hella, perhaps sensing his intent, or perhaps just tiring of the protracted defense, abruptly backed down, creating a crucial distance between them.

"Figures," Kaiser said, his voice carrying a hint of satisfaction. "You're still a swordswoman, but you can't win." He then launched his own attack, his sword moving with fluid grace. Their blades locked in a deadly, balanced struggle. Their fight appeared even, each matching the other's attack with uncanny precision. Yet, Kaiser still had not unleashed his Verse 1.

In a sudden, decisive move, as their swords were locked in a fierce embrace, Kaiser broke the bind, using his impressive footwork to vanish from Hella's sight. Hella's eyes darted around, searching for him. Then, a chilling sensation, the unmistakable presence of Kaiser, materialized behind her. He unleashed his Verse 1, "Wind Slices the Sword," with devastating precision. A sharp cut formed on Hella's back, a testament to the ethereal blade's power.

"You lost, Hella," Kaiser stated, his voice calm and final.

Hella, defeated, her pride bruised, gritted her teeth. "I will never join you, never!" she spat, her eyes blazing with defiance.

Kaiser looked at her, a hint of disappointment in his gaze, but no anger. "Fine," he said, accepting her decision. "Do what you want." He turned to leave.

Sentry, however, stopped him. "But don't we need to recruit her?"

Kaiser shook his head. "We can't make anyone who doesn't wish to join us join. It's just the three of us now."

Adriel clapped Sentry on the shoulder. "Since you have me, you'll win. Don't worry." Sentry merely sighed, a quiet acknowledgment of the challenges ahead. They left the injured, fuming Hella behind, a cohesive, albeit unusual, trio now facing the unknown trials ahead.
