133: Challenge Yurong Gym! A Mysterious Arrival
"Mom, the weakest Pokémon on your team are professional-level. How can Qin Yun stand a chance?"
Xiaoya pouted in dissatisfaction upon hearing Mo Manqi's words.
"You're siding with him already?" Mo Manqi teased with a knowing smile.
"Mom! That's not what I meant…" Xiaoya's cheeks flushed as she lowered her head, avoiding eye contact.
"Relax, no matter the outcome, Qin Yun will still receive the Gym Badge. I just want to see how strong he really is."
"I won't go all out."
Mo Manqi's tone was gentle, reminding Xiaoya that Qin Yun was still a high school student. Even Norman, one of the strongest Gym Leaders in Hoenn, wasn't able to defeat a Gym Leader at Qin Yun's age.
In Pokémon Adventures, Norman's son Ruby had immense talent, but he had to train rigorously to stand on equal footing with Gym Leaders. Becoming a Gym Trainer required reaching the professional level, but just being at that level didn't guarantee the position.
"Mm…" Xiaoya nodded, though she was still curious about Qin Yun's true strength.
"Alright, I accept."
Qin Yun didn't hesitate. He had already tested Kirlia's new abilities that morning, and now was the perfect opportunity to push its limits further.
"Let's begin."
Mo Manqi turned to both Qin Yun and Jiang Hongxuan.
"Bring it on."
"I'll be the referee," Jiang Hongxuan announced, stepping forward with a grin.
It was an honor for someone of his status to oversee the match. As chairman of the Yurong Group, one of the top five corporations in Petalburg City, Jiang Hongxuan's influence even exceeded that of Mo Manqi.
"No need to be so formal."
"Haha, well, we are business partners, after all."
The two Gym officials exchanged smiles before focusing on the match.
"This will be a three-on-three battle. The first trainer to lose all three Pokémon will be defeated."
"Trainers, send out your first Pokémon!"
Jiang Hongxuan's voice carried across the Gym.
Even though it was a Sunday, many trainers had come to the Gym to train. Upon seeing Mo Manqi herself stepping into a Gym Battle against Qin Yun, they all stopped what they were doing to watch.
"Go, Tangrowth!"
[Pokémon Data: Tangrowth]
Type: Grass
Ability: Regenerator (Restores 1/3 of max HP when switched out)
Level: Elite Peak
Potential: High
Held Item: Rocky Helmet (Deals damage to opponents who use contact moves)
Moveset: Giga Drain, Knock Off, Hidden Power, Sludge Bomb, Earthquake, Sleep Powder
Total Strength: 48,200
Tangrowth was a formidable tank with exceptional defensive stats, especially in Pokémon Adventures, where bulky Grass-types often used status moves to outlast opponents.
"The high HP and dual defenses make it tough to take down quickly," Qin Yun assessed.
On top of that, the Rocky Helmet would punish physical attacks. Close combat was out of the question.
Fortunately, Qin Yun had already planned ahead.
"Go, Combusken!"
[Pokémon Data: Combusken]
Type: Fire / Fighting
Ability: Speed Boost (Increases Speed each turn)
Level: Elite Intermediate
Potential: Top-Tier
Moveset: Ember, Quick Attack, Peck, Agility, Flamethrower, Iron Defense, Blaze Kick, Double Kick, Swords Dance
Special Trait: Burning Heart (Increases Fire-type move power after taking damage)
Held Item: Black Belt (Boosts Fighting-type moves)
Total Strength: 34,300
Mo Manqi raised an eyebrow. "A Fire and Fighting-type, huh? You've got the type advantage."
She was intrigued. This Combusken was different from the usual ones seen in the Hoenn region. It had been trained meticulously—something Qin Yun had proven before.
"With his rate of improvement, I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it to the Provincial Tournament Finals in March," Mo Manqi thought.
The Petalburg Provincial Tournament had two phases—the preliminary round in December and the final round in March. Only the top 64 individual competitors advanced past preliminaries. The finals would serve as a lead-in to the Secret Realm Exploration event in mid-April, an opportunity only top trainers could earn.
"The battle begins!" Jiang Hongxuan declared.
Trainers were required to have at least six Pokémon to enter the tournament. Qin Yun already had four strong contenders: Combusken, Kirlia, Lurantis, and Heracross.
If he managed to qualify for the finals, Jiang Hongxuan considered gifting him two high-potential Pokémon.
"Though… Qin Yun seems to have an uncanny ability to find rare Pokémon on his own," he mused.
Elite-tier Pokémon were already rare, but Pokémon with top-tier potential were even scarcer. Most of them were hoarded by the Pokémon League or sold in Secret Realms for high prices. Even as a major investor, Jiang Hongxuan had limited access to such creatures.
"Let's see how he performs first."
Meanwhile, Qin Yun had already formulated a strategy.
"Combusken, use Agility!"
Facing Tangrowth, Qin Yun prioritized movement speed to counteract its status moves and traps.
"Mo Manqi's team will include at least one professional-level Pokémon."
"She's only allowed one per match, though, so I need to conserve energy for the final showdown."
Even though Qin Yun was confident, he knew the massive power gap between Elite and Professional-level Pokémon.
As the battle commenced, a mysterious figure entered the Gym.
If Qin Yun saw her, he would be shocked—she was the same girl from the rooftop.
The trainer with the Professional-Level Gardevoir.
