I found myself standing in front of Jill's office even though I'd been told she hadn't come in today.
Then, I went to my desk and sat down. I took my phone to call Jill, but Christian's name lit up my screen.
"Hello."
"Just calling to check on you. How do you feel? How's the baby?"
"Fine," I answered absentmindedly.
There was a small pause before he spoke again. "Alora, you sound distracted. Are you busy?"
"No. Yes. I don't know."
"Hey. Did something happen?"
"I got offered the job," I blurted out.
Kunal turned toward my direction. Only briefly.
"What job?"
"Manager," I whispered. "Head of HR just called me into her office. Apparently, Jill is quitting for personal reasons."
"Do you want to take it?" There was something behind his voice. An edge that was a dead giveaway to his feelings.
"You don't want me to take the job? I thought you'd say otherwise."
"No. Of course I want you to take the job. It's just…"
"The baby. You're worried I'd overwork myself?"
