My room was dark, but the screen of my phone was an island of agonizingly bright light.

The word mocked me from beneath my last message. For the past hour, that single, gray word had been my personal enemy. I'd typed and deleted a dozen more messages. Are you sure you're okay? Your mom sounded weird. Please just tell me you're safe. But I couldn't send them. I'd already crossed the line from 'concerned best friend' to 'stage-five clinger.'

Ugh. I was so lame. I flopped back onto my pillows, burying my face in them with a groan. My heart was doing this stupid, thumpy thing it had been doing ever since… well, ever since the cafeteria.
One minute, I was teasing my best friend, my shy, quiet, always-a-little-bit-sickly Sam-chan. The next… her hand was on my face, her thumb stroking my jaw, and her eyes were filled with a focus so intense it stole the air from my lungs.
