We kept walking after our short break, pushing through the forest while trying not to trip over roots or die of bureaucratic trauma. The trees eventually began to thin, and the terrain flattened out into a clearing lit with torches. 

After a closer look, I saw that the torches were actually bundles of burning paperwork stuck on sticks. I stepped over the still-smoking remains of something that might have been an employment contract.

A few dozen Emberkin were milling around. Some danced. Some bickered. Some juggled flaming objects in a way that screamed "impending third-degree burns." Others just stood in circles, yelling about how no one was allowed to tell them what to do. 

Cappy kept screaming from atop his wooden cart at everyone to untie him from the crucifix. No one listened.
