Mike grabbed Claire's arm. "Claire, calm down. Now is not the time to lose your head."
"How can I stay calm? Adam is only five years old!" Claire clutched her hair in desperation. The thought of her child being hurt by those criminals tore at her heart.
"We can't panic now. We have to outsmart them," Mike said, pacing in the living room.
After a while, he stopped in front of her, his face solemn. "Claire, there's only one person who can help you right now."
"Who?"
"Adam's biological father, Gilbert Watson."
"No." Claire recoiled as if she'd been burned, taking several steps back, her head shaking furiously.
If Gilbert were to rescue Adam, everything would be exposed. And once that happened, she'd lose Adam forever.
"Claire, think about this carefully." Mike sighed. "I understand what you're afraid of. But Adam is already in serious danger. Besides Gilbert, no one else has the power to get him out safely, not even the police."
