Chapter 40 I Want to Calculate My Life
At Hachiman Hikigaya's insistent request, Liliana finally sat down on the other side of the sofa, looking visibly uncomfortable.
Once she had settled down, Hachiman straightened up a little and asked:
"Your name is Liliana, right? Why are you acting like you're my subordinate? I don't recall doing anything that would create that kind of relationship between us."
"You don't remember?" Liliana's expression turned a bit stiff. "In Kyoto, the Marquis already handed over the rights to both me and Mariya Yuri to you."
Voban?
Hachiman tilted his head and started pretending to ponder seriously...
Then he remembered—there was indeed something like that.
And then he completely Spartan'd out.
What the hell! Are you even a modern person!? How could you take something like that seriously!?
Hachiman didn't say it out loud, because it was clear the girl in front of him absolutely did take it seriously…
He'd never believed those characters in novels who are clearly from the modern world but think like ancient people could exist in real life—but now, he thought he might need to revise that belief.
After all, this world did come straight out of 2D…
"I didn't expect it to cause you such a burden..." Hachiman let out a long sigh and said, "I'm really sorry. Honestly, you don't need to take what the Marquis said seriously. Now that the misunderstanding is cleared up, you can act freely, just follow your own will."
"If that's the case, then I humbly ask you to resolve the incident of divine power rampaging this time," Liliana said, as if she hadn't heard a single word of the misunderstanding part.
"Rampaging?" Hachiman thought the term sounded pretty cool and asked out of curiosity, "Why do you call it that?"
"When not even the gods can control their own power, isn't that the same as what we humans call a rampage?" Liliana explained, now clearly in a state of intense seriousness. "Also, the other god involved—Poseidon—is known in mythology to have a very short temper. Are you familiar with him?"
"No, actually I'm more familiar with the one currently merged with me," Hachiman shook his head.
"In that case, I've already had my companion compile information regarding the god Poseidon, because I heard you tend to form your strategies based on your understanding of the gods."
Girl, your intel network is a little too thorough…
Hachiman couldn't help but wonder—just what kind of image of himself did people out there have?
"Um, Miss Kranjcar, I have a question I'd like to ask you."
"Ah? That name is too formal... Please just call me by my first name."
"Alright, then I'll call you Liliana."
"Ah… o-okay…"
Seriously, why are you blushing again out of nowhere? Calm down, woman!
Hachiman fought off the urge to give her a forehead flick, cleared his throat, tried to look serious, and asked, "Liliana, in your eyes, what kind of person am I as a God Slayer? Oh—and just call me Hachiman."
"Ehh!? So… so intimate!? My king—Hachiman—I... I got it…" The flustered witch-knight stammered like an old, outdated computer lagging after a system upgrade, cheeks flushed red enough to boil water.
After a moment of confusion, she finally composed herself and could speak properly again.
"Probably… a young and lustful king who loves battle."
Sensei, I have a question!
"What the hell is this 'lustful' nonsense?" Hachiman asked with a dark expression.
I don't even have a girlfriend, and you're calling me lustful!?
"Isn't it true? I heard the future heir of a major Japanese family is already your lover, and the Japanese mages are even selecting suitable women for your bedchambers..."
This is getting way too much…
Just as Hachiman was about to cut off Liliana's embarrassing monologue, the doorbell rang from the entrance.
"It must be my companion. I'll go open the door, Hachi… Hachiman…" She started off speaking normally, but stuttered again when saying his name, and rushed out like she was about to crash into something.
Thankfully she didn't, because in houses like this, crashing into a load-bearing wall would've meant looking for another place to sleep tonight.
Shortly after, Liliana returned, leading a girl with long green hair, dressed in a maid outfit and casually carrying a large suitcase with one hand.
The girl was very pretty. Though not as doll-like and exquisite as Liliana, she had a clever-looking face and still wore a mischievous smile. She looked a little younger than Liliana.
Upon seeing Hachiman sitting on the couch, she quickly ran over.
"You must be King Hikigaya! It is truly a blessing to witness your esteemed presence! I am a witch apprentice affiliated with the Bronze Black Cross, Karen Jankulovski."
"Oh…" Hachiman looked at her.
He vaguely remembered there being a scheming maid character next to Liliana in the anime. Maybe this was her?
At the very least, this girl clearly wasn't some innocent flower—more like a mischievous monkey with a fur coat.
"I never thought I'd get to meet the famous 'King of Ten Suns'…"
Huh? What the hell was that just now?
"Hold on a sec!" Hachiman raised his hand in a STOP gesture, pulled a slightly forced smile, and asked Karen, "Sorry, I'm not really used to being called 'King' and all that. But… what did you call me just now?"
"The King of Ten Suns," Karen blinked. She looked over at Liliana, who was also clearly confused.
In that moment, Hachiman suddenly felt like his entire world turned dark.
He wasn't unaware that someone would one day give him a nickname behind his back, and that he'd probably be the last to find out, but...
Of all the possible nicknames—why this one!? The "Sun" one!?
Sure, in ancient times, the character referred to the noble sun and had high status—but that was ancient history!
Hachiman felt like he might seriously need to consult a fortune teller for his yearly luck reading. Something was definitely off about this year.
He traveled abroad and immediately got thrashed by the Emperor of the East going berserk. Then he arrived in Italy all pumped up only to find the big-bearded guy replaced by Zaimozuka. And now he's stuck with a ridiculous nickname like "Sun King."
He must get his fortune checked!
"Oh, right—Your Majesty, I've already compiled the information about the god Poseidon. Would it be alright if I set up your study now?"
Karen clearly didn't pick up on Hachiman's shattered pride. Seeing that no one was talking, she eagerly volunteered herself for work.
In response, Hachiman could only weakly wave his hand.
Right now, he was too mentally drained to even speak.
