Chapter 49 - The Chakra War Machine

"There's a mission for you" he said

"It might be the easiest mission in Akatsuki history," Tendo Pain said dryly, his six eyes scanning Haruto—who, at that exact moment, was unapologetically picking his nose.

Haruto blinked and stopped mid-pick. "Huh?"

Pain ignored him. "Here's the scroll. Details inside. You're dismissed."

Haruto raised a hand lazily. "So, um… Pain, quick question—"

"You're dismissed," Pain repeated, this time sharper. The cold in his tone nearly froze the air.

Haruto's mouth hung open, but no sound came out. He was speechless as he closed his mouth slowly, nodding stiffly, and walked out of the chamber.

---

Outside the meeting hall, Haruto groaned and rubbed his temples. "I swear, one day I'm gonna—no, wait, he's technically already half-dead... would that make it overkill?"

He stood there for a second, thoughtfully stroking his chin. "Maybe just a light overkill."

Back in his room, he plopped down and unrolled the scroll. His eyes scanned the message quickly:

---

Coordinates: [REDACTED].

Haruto read while going outside the base*

"Yikes." Haruto muttered as he burned the scroll after memorizing the location. "So Orochimaru and Danzo are building chakra monsters now? Creepy."

He stood, stretched, and glanced at the horizon. "After this mission, I seriously need to reconsider how deep I've gotten into this whole Akatsuki mess."

Just then, a bird chirped from a nearby ledge—until it was caught in a flare of residual chakra.

Fwoosh.

The poor thing dropped, slightly singed. But haruto caught it.

He tilted his head. "Looks like roasted dinner showed up early."

He threw it at a dog and left

Outskirts – Land of Fire

Haruto landed on a tall tree overlooking a seemingly innocent facility built into the hill. It wasn't discreet at all—wires, pipes, and chakra seals were glowing across the exterior.

"Yep. This base is practically screaming 'I'm a lab of bad decisions,'" he muttered.

He approached cautiously, slipped through a side wall, and entered a dim room with nothing but a bed and a dusty rug. Pulling it aside, he uncovered a trap door.

"Classic."

Descending into the passageway, a dim yellow glow began to radiate from his body. He reached a thick metal door and punched it open with ease.

Inside, darkness.

He created ten clones, each entering Kurama Chakra Mode to illuminate the space.

"Alright, which one of you brave idiots is going first?" one clone asked.

A moment of silence later

"Not me!"

"Definitely not me!"

"Pass"

"Why do I always get voted into this!?"

"Shut up!" Haruto barked. "We move together. Like a terrified horror film characters!"

"We don't need to be dumb tho" a clone said as

They advanced slowly. A skeletal figure sat motionless in a chair.

"Okay...I give up, what's that thing on the chair?" A clone said as another stepped forward

"Is this… a corpse?" a clone said, nudging it. The moment contact was made, red tendrils lashed out, sucking away Kurama's chakra violently. The clone vanished.

The others jumped back instantly as the figure opened its eyes—one half blue, the other a sinister red.

"What… kind of eye is that?" Haruto muttered, feeling Kurama's chakra pulse anxiously inside him.

The figure stood, and its skin flared into Kurama Mode. Identical to Haruto's.

"What the hell?!" one clone shouted. "That thing can copy your abilities!"

"Harutos!" the original yelled. "Combination Three! Go!"

"Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu!"

"Water Style: Water Dragon Jutsu!"

"Earth Style: Earth Tsunami!"

"Wind Style: Rasengan!"

The jutsus launched together, a destructive barrage of elements—and then, with a sickening sound, hands sprouted from the creature's body and absorbed the entire combo.

Then—

BOOM. The attacks exploded backward, dispelling four clones.

Haruto growled. "This was supposed to be the easiest mission in Akatsuki history!"

Kurama's voice rumbled in his mind. "He's using chakra like a machine. Drain him. Stick to taijutsu."

"I'd say 'easy for you to say,' but your giant frame probably would crush him," Haruto muttered, dodging a spiraling Rasengan thrown at him—his Rasengan.

"How's he recreating my jutsu?!"

More clones fell as the creature launched a flurry of attacks, each one mimicking Haruto's moves. Haruto dodged mid-air, then spotted something—glowing red—beneath the creature's chest.

Before he could speak, the creature roared, loud enough to shake the ground.

Haruto froze. His eyes stung—then watered—then burned.

Inside the creature's eyes, tomoe rotated violently… six in total.

"…That's a Mangekyō or...," he whispered.

"An advance version of sharingan" Kurama said as his hatred flared to life

Suddenly, visions slammed into him.

---

A boy with spiky black hair and orange goggles, laughing. Calling him "brother."

Then—another memory—same boy, walking with a smiling girl with lavender markings on her cheeks.

Then the voice, soft and distant:

"Rin… I'm—"

---

"Wait," Haruto gasped, clutching his chest. "Those visions… why do they feel like..."

The creature kicked him hard, sending him flying into the wall.

Coughing, Haruto stood. "Alright… no more games."

The chakra around the creature faltered. It staggered.

"It's running out… finally."

Haruto charged, drawing his katana. The creature lashed out with a distorted punch. Haruto ducked, slashed—its arm fell.

But vines sprouted, trying to reattach it.

"Nope."

He moved like lightning—dashing, slicing, kicking—and finally, with one final burst of chakra, stabbed his katana straight into the glowing core in its chest.

The creature froze.

Then—

Boom.

A shockwave of chakra pulsed outward as the vines withered and the figure collapsed, unmoving.

Haruto wiped his brow, panting. "Easiest mission in Akatsuki history, huh?"

Haruto said as he looked at the corpse
