Chapter 34 - Chapter 34 - Spoiled Princess

When they arrived in the room, they couldn't help but feel a bit surprised by the decor.

The spacious hall opened up with polished wooden floors that reflected the soft light from tall windows, filtered by diaphanous curtains that danced with the breeze. Beige leather sofas, large enough to accommodate a sizable group, were arranged in an elegant semicircle around a rough stone fireplace, which remained unlit but still imposing. An eighty-inch TV dominated one of the walls, flanked by a built-in dark wood bookshelf filled with meticulously chosen books and decorative objects. Above, the vaulted ceiling was crossed by exposed beams, adding a rustic touch that contrasted with the modernity of the space.

Rias sat at the edge of one of the sofas, her posture erect, hands clasped over her knees, her crimson hair cascading over her shoulders. Her eyes, however, betrayed an intensity that didn't escape anyone—except, perhaps, Kazuya himself. Akeno, by her side, leaned back slightly, a mischievous smile still playing on her lips as she observed the surroundings with an almost predatory interest.

Koneko opted for a smaller armchair, legs crossed, a cookie still in hand, her amber eyes fixed on Kazuya as if trying to unravel a puzzle. Kiba, ever the gentleman, sat with impeccable posture, his polite smile masking the vigilance in his eyes. Issei, on the other hand, sank into the sofa, clearly uncomfortable, his eyes darting between the opulence of the place and the enigmatic figure of Kazuya.

The sound of light footsteps announced Kazuya's return, emerging from the kitchen carrying a silver tray with a steaming teapot, porcelain cups, and a plate of homemade cookies that exuded a sweet, comforting aroma. His white hair gleamed under the soft light, and the faint smile on his lips was hard to interpret.

"I hope you like black tea…" Kazuya said, his voice calm and slightly amused as he placed the tray on the polished wooden coffee table. He served the cups one by one, his movements precise, almost theatrical, as if playing a role he had mastered perfectly. "If I'd known you were coming, I'd have prepared something better. It's not every day I receive such… illustrious guests."

As he spoke, he maintained a serene expression, but deep inside, a silent plea ran through his mind, a disguised prayer directed not to the heavens, but to those who inhabited the mansion.

Servants were capable of overcoming all obstacles without hindrance through the [Spiritual Form] they possessed alongside their [Physical Form]. This was a way for them to conserve mana outside of combat or, as in this case, a means to move freely, whenever and wherever they wished. At that moment, several of his Servants were scattered throughout the hall in their spiritual state, invisible to mortal eyes. Some, more tempestuous, like Shuten-Douji, wanted to descend and "play," but had been restrained. Earlier, Kazuya had entrusted Jeanne and Joan with the task of alerting the others: there were visitors, and they were not to interfere unless the situation turned hostile.

But they had complicated personalities and carried their own wills; maintaining harmony among so many legendary figures was, at times, harder than facing an army. Fortunately, he hadn't summoned Servants too difficult to keep in line. Some took advantage of the situation to make him promise a few things, but that was it…

Rias raised an eyebrow, accepting the cup with a subtle nod of thanks.

"You speak as if we were strangers, Kazuya-kun…" she retorted, her tone firm but with a softness that betrayed an inner conflict. Her eyes followed him as he distributed the cups, a spark of something deeper glinting in her gaze. "But… I'm sorry for not warning you we were coming. I would have if you hadn't changed your phone and moved. Luckily, one of the academy students who lives nearby said they saw you around here, and we checked with the school administration for your new address. So, we found you… The school is quite worried about you abandoning your studies…"

Kazuya finished serving the tea and sat in a black leather armchair, crossing his legs with an almost provocative calm. He held his own cup, the steam rising in spirals as his supernatural blue eyes scanned the group.

"Abandon is a strong word, Gremory-san. As I said before, I had some personal matters, and school stopped being a priority…" he replied, his smile widening with a touch of irony. "But I understand your point, and I don't blame you for not warning me about your sudden visit."

Akeno let out a muffled giggle, blowing gently on her tea before taking a sip. Her violet eyes gleamed with a mix of provocation and genuine interest, as if trying to decipher what lay behind that relaxed facade, as she spoke: "Ara, ara. Kazuya-kun is cruel to hide things from his friends. You know it only makes us more curious…"

Koneko, still nibbling on a cookie, muttered something inaudible, her eyes narrowing as she observed Kazuya, and Issei, looking nervous, opted for silence.

Kiba, maintaining his composure, leaned slightly forward, his untouched cup in hand.

"Ryougi-san, I understand we all have our reasons, but your absence caused… concern. Especially for the president." He cast a quick glance at Rias, who kept her face impassive, though a faint blush appeared on her cheeks.

Kazuya leaned back in his armchair with a calm smile, one hand resting on his chin as if more interested in observing their reactions than justifying anything. His eyes gleamed with a playful, almost provocative tone.

"How touching… I almost feel loved now." He tilted his head, looking at Kiba calmly. "But concern, Yuuto-san? The president always struck me as the type who handles the unexpected well."

He then turned his gaze to Rias, the smile softening, becoming more subtle, almost respectful.

"Tell me, Gremory-san, were you really worried?" The question came with the casualness of someone who knows exactly what they're doing.

Rias held his gaze firmly, but the faint blush on her face intensified. She crossed her legs slowly, as if to regain control of the situation, and replied with her usual elegance, though her voice carried a slight trace of restrained frustration.

"I worry about the students under my supervision, especially when they disappear without notice for days."

Kazuya raised an eyebrow, clearly enjoying the formality of her response.

"So that's it… pure administrative responsibility." He let out a light, dramatic sigh. "And here I thought there was something more."

As Rias was about to speak, Issei, who had been restless, nervously tapping his foot with the forgotten teacup in his hands, blurted out from his thoughts: "Man, seriously, this place is insane! Like, do you live here alone? How do you pay for all this?"

Looking at the former pervert, Kazuya tilted his head, the smile never leaving his lips. "Alone? More or less. As for the rest… let's just say I have my means."

After shifting his gaze from Issei, he took a sip of his tea, his eyes lingering on Rias for a moment longer than necessary, as if testing her reaction.

"But tell me, what really brings you here? I don't believe the school administration would send the entire Occult Research Club just to check on a student who… lost interest in exams and uniforms."

Rias straightened on the sofa, maintaining the imposing posture of a noble, but unable to stop the slight tightening in her chest as she met those blue eyes that seemed to see beyond the surface. She took a deep breath, summoning the courage she rarely needed to find.

"Kazuya-kun, I…"

Her voice faltered for a moment, almost inaudible, but it didn't go unnoticed by the more attentive. The moment she had been waiting for had arrived, and she couldn't help but feel a little nervous.

"We want to talk to you…" she continued, with more firmness, though the subtle blush on her face betrayed the storm of thoughts behind her controlled facade. "And I want to offer you a place among us again. Don't refuse like last time; first, hear everything I have to say…"

Her words sounded more personal than she intended. And perhaps, deep down, they were, as she wanted him for herself in a way far different from an ordinary member of her peerage.

The air in the room seemed to grow heavier, the tension rising like an electric current.

Kazuya raised an eyebrow, his smile turning sharper, almost predatory.

"I'll hear what you have to say…" He leaned back in his armchair, his eyes gleaming with a mix of amusement and challenge. "I'm all ears."

The room fell silent for a moment.

Rias took a deep breath, her eyes still fixed on Kazuya's.

"Before anything else, Kazuya-kun…" The way she pronounced his name was measured, solemn. "You need to know the truth about us. And about this world."

Kazuya tilted his head, the smile not leaving his lips. He set his cup down on the saucer with a soft click, saying nothing.

Rias, seated at the edge of the sofa, straightened even more, her posture exuding the natural authority of a demonic heiress. Her blue eyes met Kazuya's, and for a moment, the blush on her cheeks seemed to intensify, but she quickly regained her composure. With a sigh, she decided it was time to lay her cards on the table.

"Kazuya-kun…" she began, her voice firm but laden with a seriousness that contrasted with her earlier softness. "We are demons. Not in the folkloric or religious sense… but literally, we belong to the supernatural world. This world exists on the fringes of what ordinary humans know, coexisting with angels, fallen angels, and other creatures…"

The word hung in the air like a stone thrown into a calm lake, creating ripples of silence.

"Demons? Seriously? I don't think a sane person would stay calm after hearing that…" Kazuya teased, his tone almost mocking but with a playful edge that made it hard to tell if he was taking it seriously. "Are you rehearsing for a drama club or something? Because, wow, that's quite an entrance…"

Rias frowned, clearly frustrated but not surprised. She had suspected he knew about the supernatural to some extent, but his response suggested he might only know a little, not everything. Perhaps he had only awakened his Sacred Gear, and its ability created some kind of magical barrier that had injured Tomoe last time? Though she had never heard of a Sacred Gear of that nature, she doubted it was his only ability, especially since her brother believed he possessed a Longinus, which could have multiple abilities. But it was good that he didn't know everything about the supernatural.

Perhaps he was the type who only believed what he saw with his own eyes? She needed to show something credible, didn't she? With that in mind, she rose from the sofa with a fluid motion, her natural commanding aura intensifying.

"It's not a joke, Kazuya-kun," she said, her tone now sharper. With a faint snap of [Demonic Energy], a pair of black, leathery wings emerged from her back, shimmering with a faint crimson hue under the room's light.

Akeno, Koneko, and Kiba followed suit, each manifesting their own demonic wings with almost choreographed synchrony.

Issei, on the other hand, scratched the back of his neck, visibly embarrassed.

"I-I still don't know how to do that properly…" he muttered, his cheeks flushing as he avoided the others' gazes.

Kazuya fell silent for a moment, his eyes scanning the group with an expression that seemed to waver between surprise and contained amusement. He crossed his arms with a calm that contrasted with the supernatural energy now filling the room.

"Well… that's new…" he said in a neutral tone. "Demons, huh? Not exactly what I expected from a morning visit."

Rias thought he was trying to stay calm, as she doubted any normal person would remain composed in such a situation—or perhaps he wasn't exactly normal. Standing, she took a deep breath, her wings folding slowly as she continued:

"Kazuya-kun, what I'm trying to say is that the world is much bigger than you imagine. And you… probably have a Sacred Gear."

Kazuya tilted his head, feigning curiosity. "Sacred Gear? What's that, exactly?"

Akeno let out a muffled giggle, but Rias remained calm and continued.

"Sacred Gears are mystical artifacts created by the Biblical God and embedded in the souls of certain people. They can manifest in various forms: as weapons, abilities… Some are powerful enough to threaten Gods. And you, Kazuya-kun… possess one of those…"

Kazuya listened attentively, the smile never leaving his lips, though his eyes gleamed with something Rias couldn't quite decipher. To maintain the facade, he leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "So, you think I have one of these… Sacred Gears. And I assume I'm in danger. Is that it?"

"Exactly…" Rias replied, her eyes fixed on his, a mix of determination and something more personal shining in them. She then began to explain everything about the supernatural world, specifically the Three Factions.

In summary, a long time ago, a great war broke out between the three factions: demons, Fallen Angels, and Angels. The demons were led by Lucifer, Beelzebub, Leviathan, and Asmodeus, the Four Great Original Maous. The Angels were led by God, and the Fallen Angels by Azazel. It was a brutal, bloody battle with significant losses on all sides. During the conflict, two immensely powerful dragons, known as Ddraig and Albion, also called the Two Heavenly Dragons, with the power to kill Gods, appeared on the battlefield, causing even more chaos. The three factions temporarily united to stop the dragons, but they were too powerful. In his final act, the Biblical God sealed both dragons into two Sacred Gears: the Boosted Gear, housing Ddraig's soul, and the Divine Dividing, housing Albion's soul. After this, the Four Great Maous were killed, and the three factions retreated due to their losses, remaining in a cold war to this day.

Rias, of course, didn't know that the Biblical God had died.

She also began to explain that he was a Sacred Gear user, specifically a Longinus.

Sacred Gears, also known as God's Artifacts, are powerful items granted to humans by the original Biblical God.

The original Biblical God created Sacred Gears as part of his system to perform miracles on Earth. Certain individuals with Sacred Gears grew to become very powerful and influential, and many people whose names were etched in history were likely Sacred Gear possessors. There can be more than one Sacred Gear of the same type, such as Blade Blacksmith.

Sacred Gears range from the common Twice Critical to the rare Twilight Healing, with the exception being the Longinus, which are all unique in their own way.

Longinus, also known as Tools that Destroy Gods, are the thirteen original top-tier Sacred Gears with power enough to kill gods.

This class of Sacred Gears is specifically named after the [True Longinus], the first and most powerful, and unlike other Sacred Gears, which can have multiple of the same type, Longinus are entirely unique, with only one of each existing at a time.

After listening to the explanation, Kazuya calmly asked: "So, why exactly are you here, telling me all this?"

The question made the demons exchange surprised glances.

Rias took a deep breath and continued, getting to the point of why she was there: "After the Great War, which devastated the Three Factions, one of the current Maous, Ajuka Beelzebub, created the Evil Pieces system. These pieces allow us demons to reincarnate other beings—humans, youkai, or even certain mystical creatures—as demons to serve in our peerages. It's a practice that strengthens our ranks and ensures the survival of our species. The only exceptions are Gods and Divine Dragons, who cannot be reincarnated."

She paused, raising her chin with pride.

"The reincarnated become part of the [King's] peerage. In my case, I treat my servants like family."

Her gaze swept over Akeno, Kiba, Koneko, and Issei, a gesture that reinforced her words.

Kazuya raised an eyebrow, the smile never leaving his face. "Okay. And?"

Rias frowned slightly, surprised by his lack of reaction. She had expected a human, even a Longinus possessor, to show some sign of fear upon hearing about the supernatural world. But Kazuya seemed far too calm. He really knew everything, didn't he? As she had theorized upon learning about Sona's report, it was best to get straight to the point.

"We've identified that you're the bearer of a Longinus, a Sacred Gear capable of challenging even Gods. Furthermore, we know you're being hunted by Fallen Angels. They won't hesitate to eliminate you if they discover your weapon's potential. That's why I'm offering you the chance to join my peerage." She smiled, confident, as if the proposal were an unquestionable honor. "As my servant, you'll be protected, and I can guide you to master the power of your Longinus."

Kazuya let out a low sigh, like someone accepting the inevitability of a game he'd been playing with the wrong pieces. He straightened in his armchair, his narrowed eyes fixed on Rias, who now watched him with restrained expectation—or perhaps a hint of hope.

So, it's finally time to drop the act, huh…?

If it weren't for two specific goals he still wanted to achieve with all this, he would've ended the charade the moment he saw them at the door. But now, with the Gremory heiress's posture so blatantly calculated and the other members clearly holding back, Kazuya couldn't avoid the inevitable conclusion.

Rias is dumb as hell.

Of course, she knew about the Student Council girl. The one who nearly died trying to invade his property. That much was obvious, or she wouldn't even be here. The entire group had already accepted that he knew more than he should. The problem wasn't the lack of information… it was how she chose to handle it.

She showed up pretending concern. Skirted around the real reason. Threw out small talk about "curiosity" and "friendship." And the worst part? When she spilled everything, she lied about Fallen Angels coming after him because of his Sacred Gear, when not even her servants could sense any magical energy or anything special from him due to his [Third Magic], something he'd learned over time. Rias's brother only knew he had a Longinus because he wasn't the original owner of his body without being reincarnated. But back to the point, the girl before his eyes hadn't even considered asking if he knew things because of them.

He almost laughed. Not even a minimal investigation. Nothing. No attempt to figure out how he knew. Just the arrogance of thinking offering him a place "among them" would solve everything.

Pathetic.

Kazuya leaned back, his fingers lazily tapping the armrest of his chair. There was no point in keeping up the act anymore. He gave a faint smile and spoke calmly: "So, you think I, a mere human, should bow down and become your servant just because some Fallen Angels are supposedly after me? If I have a Longinus, a weapon that can take down Gods, all I need is to figure out how to use it and take care of myself. Or do you think I can't handle it?"

Rias's eyes narrowed, but she maintained her arrogant smile, though a faint blush of irritation appeared on her cheeks.

"You're human, Kazuya. Even with a Longinus, you don't have the training needed to access its true power. As part of my peerage, I could protect you and teach you to wield that strength. Without us, you're just an easy target for the Fallen Angels."

Kazuya tilted his head, his smile turning sharper.

"Interesting, Rias. But tell me something: if these Fallen Angels are threatening an innocent human, why aren't you, the great Gremory heiress, dealing with them directly? Isn't it the responsibility of demons to maintain order in their territory? Or do you prefer to wait for someone to die so you can reincarnate them as your servant?"

The sarcasm in his voice was cutting, and he shot a sidelong glance at Issei, who swallowed hard, clearly uncomfortable with the indirect mention of his own reincarnation.

Rias stood abruptly, her demonic aura pulsing faintly, making the shadows in the room flicker.

"Of course not!" she exclaimed, her voice firm but tinged with indignation. "My priority is to protect those under my care and prevent unnecessary deaths. But the situation with the Fallen Angels is complex…"

"It must be…" Kazuya said calmly, then smiled and continued: "You know, Gremory-san, your whole history lesson was boring. I've known about the supernatural world for far longer than you think. Angels, Demons, Fallen Angels, Youkai, Dragons… I'm not some lost newbie who just stumbled into this circus. And that's not exactly a surprise to you, is it? After all, the magical barriers around my property didn't go unnoticed. You already suspected I wasn't just any human, didn't you? And another thing about this whole charade—it's annoying…"

What was he talking about? Well, when he was reborn into this world, he learned about the entire farce and realized one crucial point: his existence was nothing more than a whim of the Maou Lucifer for his little sister. That, of course, left him quite upset. But the thrill of rebirth, unique abilities, and everything else kept him in a euphoric state for a while. There was nothing he could do about it; that's just how he was. After the miserable life he'd had, this place was paradise and left him exhilarated. To maintain that feeling, he simply pretended to be someone interested in the Demon King's little sister, keeping up appearances as the former owner of his body, albeit in his own way…

The silence that followed was heavy.

Rias's eyes widened, her heart racing, torn between shock and a burning attraction consuming her. The peerage exchanged surprised glances, but not entirely shocked. They had noticed the magical barriers around Kazuya's house, and this whole conversation had been more "diplomatic" than necessary. Akeno covered her mouth, her smile now more curious than ever. Kiba clenched his fist, while Koneko stopped chewing, her eyes fixed on Kazuya, assessing him with even more attention. Issei, confused, exclaimed: "Wait, you know about all this? Like, demons and Fallen Angels? What's that supposed to mean, man?!"

Everyone ignored the boy.

"What do you mean by all this, Kazuya? How do you know about the supernatural? And what did you mean by it being annoying?" Rias asked, frowning.

"I meant what it implies, little princess…You are so annoying with your speeches and unpleasant personality..." Kazuya said with a crooked half-smile and narrowed eyes, as if it were all a bad, predictable play.

His words hit a nerve in Rias, who felt her pride being hurt, she gritted her teeth and practically screamed.

"Stop mocking me! I demand—"

"—respect?" Kazuya interrupted, resting his chin in his hand. "Oh, that was cute. You demand respect? Seriously? Do you really think the world revolves around your title as 'heiress'? That being an exemplary student or carrying the Gremory name gives you any moral high ground here?"

"What… what… what are you talking about? Stop spouting nonsense. Speak now or—"

"Or what? Kill me? A wasted space like you has the audacity to challenge me? If your brother, who was immortalized as the bearer of Lucifer's title centuries ago, is one of the three super demons and among the ten strongest beings in the world, I'd gladly take him on. Hell, it'd be a long, good fight that I'd enjoy. But a delusional, spoiled little girl who uses her family's name and prestige like you, ignoring your responsibility as the heir of the Gremory House—stop daydreaming and wake up, girl. Face reality. The world isn't all sunshine and rainbows like your spoiled, insignificant brain always imagines."

Losing any passion she had before, her pride trampled, Rias's eyes burned with rage.

"Do you have any idea who I am?"

"I do. A spoiled girl, raised with every possible luxury, who doesn't have an ounce of sense and still expects others to clap for her decisions. Do you really think no one notices how much you hide behind your brother or your family name?"

Akeno took a step forward, an electric aura starting to form around her.

"Stop disrespecting my master, Kazuya. Don't blame us if we get unpleasant."

He glanced at her sideways, emotionless.

"You? Attack me to protect the pride of a girl who tried to sacrifice an innocent for convenience? A girl who risked a human's life just to make her own easier? Please. The worst part is you didn't even question it, did you? You just followed."

Akeno clenched her fists but didn't respond. Kazuya turned to the one who stood out as the most out-of-place: Issei Hyoudou.

"Issei."

The boy swallowed hard. "Y-yeah?"

"Remember Raynare?"

"…How could I forget?"

"Of course. The girl who stabbed you in the heart on a fake date and left you to die. And who showed up afterward to save you, turn you into a pawn, and play the heroine?" Kazuya said, each word dripping with sarcasm.

Issei looked at Rias, confused, disturbed. "You knew…?"

"Of course she knew," Kazuya answered for her, standing calmly. "It was the plan from the start, wasn't it, Miss Gremory? Let the boy fall to the Fallen Angels and then swoop in as the savior. Because that's the only way you could secure someone's loyalty, right? By playing with their life. You could've easily dealt with the Fallen Angels the moment you heard about them, but you ignored it. And when you found out Issei was going out with the girl, instead of stopping her, you let it all happen…"

Well, he doubted it was just that. Many stories from his past life depicted this theory, and he simply used it to achieve his goal.

Rias seemed paralyzed. She tried to speak, but no words came out.

"It's funny," Kazuya continued, circling the table like a teacher tired of his students' lies. "You talk about freedom, about escaping an arranged marriage, about carving your own path… but you act like the same demons your brother tried to reform. Orchestrating manipulations, using human lives, all for a convenient outcome."

"You don't understand anything!" Rias exploded. "You don't know what it's like to live with the weight of a name like mine!"

"Don't I?" Kazuya stopped in front of her. "I know more than you think. The problem is you want all the privileges of being a Gremory but none of the responsibilities. You want to be the rebel in the story but without the consequences. You want love, power, respect… without getting your hands dirty. And when someone confronts you, you cry like you're the victim."

Rias bit her lip hard, her eyes shining with frustration and shame.

"You want to know what freedom is, Rias? Freedom is making choices no one else wants to make, protecting others even when there's no guarantee of reward. Freedom demands sacrifice. You don't want freedom. You want comfort. You're not fighting for your freedom. You're running from the responsibility that comes with it."

Issei, still processing the revelation, seemed torn between anger and disappointment.

The atmosphere in the room was charged.

None of Rias's servants dared to speak.

"And about the contract with the Phenex House," Kazuya continued, mercilessly: "I know about it. It's something that's spread through the underworld. And I also know how much you're against it. But shouldn't you know it's your responsibility? The Gremory House has always faced bad rumors because of its tendency to love its servants too much. At least Duke Gremory had the Marchosias House as a defender in the past, but now? Other demon families see it as weakness. Not just them! In the supernatural world, where the strong dominate the weak and power is all that matters, kindness has always been synonymous with weakness. Your family hasn't produced anything noteworthy for the demon kind in centuries. And because your brother was crowned with the title of Lucifer, in the eyes of the masses, his achievements belong to the Lucifer line, not Gremory."

"And to gain another ally, the marriage contract between the Gremory and Phenex Houses happened. Your job as the next duke of your house is to maintain it. You call it a prison. But what have you offered in return? You want to undo centuries of political alliances based on your teenage whim for freedom? How many houses are you willing to drag into the mud for that?"

"And… there… there must be another way! I'll protect my family's line and prestige! But I'll stick to my decision to abolish this stupid marriage contract!"

"What are you going to do, huh? Are you as powerful as your brother? Do you have a blessed mind like the Sitri heir? Can you endure a torturous life until you gain the necessary power like the current heir of the Great King Bael?"

"I… I'll become the Rating Game Champion, just like my dream! Yes, I'll make my dream come true!" Rias said firmly, with absolute confidence.

"And how long will that take?" Kazuya crossed his arms. "Ten years? Fifty? A century? Do you think the underworld will wait? That the elders will applaud your rebellion? You're trapped in a childish dream, trying to shape the world into your idealized image. Wake up, princess. The real world isn't an anime where everything resolves with effort and friendship."

He leaned forward, his eyes now colder. "If you want to destroy that engagement, then renounce the Gremory name. Cut ties with your family and start from scratch. But you won't do that. Because you want the name, the prestige, the protection… and still want to play the rebel. That's not courage. It's cowardice with glitter."

Rias fell silent. There was nothing more she could say. Not in the face of Kazuya's brutal clarity.

"You know… this all reminds me why I hate demonic politics. Too much noise, too little brain."

And then, as if nothing had happened, he reached out, grabbed a cookie from the tray in front of him, and bit into it with disinterest.

"Anyone want tea?"
