Quickly, I ducked low, my heart thundering in my chest. 'I can't get caught now; it will be over for me.'
Footsteps approached rapidly toward where I'd been.
'If you remain here, Ember, you are as good as dead. Run!'
I didn't think twice; my feet moved on their own. I ran through the garden paths, through tall grass and branches that whipped across my arms. I ducked under a wooden archway and pressed myself against a tree.
I heard the sound of twigs snapping from a few feet away. Cold sweat dripped down my face, my chest burned, and my breath came out ragged.
'I can't return to the dungeon—not yet. Not without something more solid.' I peeked from the tree. Allison paced around the space, sniffing the air. Her hazel eyes had turned to gold.
I pulled back into the cover of the tree. 'Okay, I think I need to reach Lydia and Caroline. I need to tell them what I saw. And who knows if they are in danger now because of me.'
