Ch. 3 A Murder of Crows

Disclaimer: Everyone here is at least 18 years of age. We'll begin the actual story just after they graduate from High School. In Japan, students are usually 18 years old during their last year in High School, by the time they start higher education they're usually 19 years old. So all scenes of a sexual nature, and references to past sexual experiences were done between adults.

-No smut, we're still moving the plot forward.-

*WARNING AND SLIGHT SPOILERS*

AN: I know I write stories that are basically super AUs and that people might find this off-putting, I already got flack for starting Hogwarts at 18 in my other story. I've been playing FGO and been consuming Nasuverse lore for the better part of my life now, and other than Ritsuka Fujimura being weirdly capable of supporting a ton of servants, he/she doesn't really have any abilities other than what their mystic code provides, and super basic magecraft. So in this Dxd universe we have Magus & Wand Witches and Wizards, I already have the explanation on their difference in my mind. Basically just to give Ritsuka more abilities I'm making her a wand witch who went to Mahoutokoro, I already hinted at it a few chapters ago.

*WARNING AND SLIGHT SPOILERS*

As the vendor, a kind-looking slender woman with dark hair currently tied in a ponytail wearing a baseball cap, poured the batter into the cast iron waffle mould while she looked at me lasciviously.

Smiling at her, as I am already too used to the sight of random women and the occasional men openly lusting for me, to each their own, frowning slightly as I felt something off.

Taking a quick glance back at Fujimura, my worries slightly abate, as I can still see her while she talks to a random lady.

Turning my attention back towards the lady in the waffle and ice-cream, she was trying to get my attention while offering me my dessert order.

I got myself both a combination of matcha and azuki red bean flavours, taking hold of the wrapped dessert as I took a bite of my ice cream encased in a thin, still hot, waffle rolled into a cone shape.

The pleasant feeling of hot and cold food mixes together as the sweet taste of the ice cream hits my tongue with a hint of bitterness from the matcha, its earthy notes complementing the azuki bean's lovely, subtle, and earthy flavour.

I placed two 500 yen coins on the small tray designated for all payments before taking hold of Fujimura's order.

Turning around, I frowned as my gaze locked on the bench, our bags still present while both of our bikes were still parked behind it. I cast my gaze around the area as I couldn't find my red-haired companion.

I felt it, just as I crossed the street; just as the plum blossom scented easterly winds reached my nose; just as my foot touched the paved floor of the park, the subtle idea to turn around filled my head as I felt the mana-filled suggestion trying to take purchase on my conscience.

Cycling Od around my body, I rejected the suggestion from the bounded field, from my estimation, covering the whole park. Frowning at how the bounded field was deployed, as the level of expertise needed to deploy this subtly and quickly is beyond mine, Rin or Sakura could probably analyse this better.

It's probably the local devils doing something; hopefully, it isn't a stray hunt. Though, why didn't Fujimura and the lady leave? Was it an oversight on the side of the person who projected the bounded field?

As I spied a piece of paper oriented weirdly, it was tucked in between my bag's straps. Crouching down as I looked at the note closely.

"Lady asked me to help her find her dog. Come join us, we're in this general direction. —>"

Looking at the arrow that's pointing towards a group of trees, I sincerely wish that nothing bad happens.

I've been walking through this patch of woods for about two minutes now when I see an open area up ahead.

Frowning as I haven't found Fujimura nor the lady with her, my dessert already done, while Fujimura's is almost complet–

"Aaaaahhhhhhh!!!"

Hearing a shrill sound up ahead, I dropped Fujimura's dessert and the wrap that held mine on the ground as I started opening my circuits.

Thinking of a gun's hammer being fired.

Typically, if you were a regular magus, you would need a phrase to aid you in your self-hypnosis as you activate circuits and actualise mysteries, but this isn't the case for me as I have shed most of my humanity ever since that night of flames and nightmares.

Though I still sometimes mutter specific activation phrases as a reflex.

Just as I reached the edge of the woods, I immediately saw the source of the noise.

"Bombarda!" Fujimura blindly threw an exploding hex over her shoulder as I traced a European bow.

"Fujimura, over here.", as I ran in their direction as well.

Pausing for a moment to trace an arrow and applying an advanced version of gradation parallel, and pulled.

What is the problem, you may ask? Well, we currently have Fujimura, wand in hand, as she drags her companion, the lady I saw a while ago, away from a flock of fallen angels taking mocking shots at the pair as they lazily threw bolts of light while they laughed amusedly.

They, of course, shifted some of their attention towards me just as I called for Fujimura. So it wasn't a surprise when my volley of arrows missed, but I continued to apply pressure as I spammed them with hundreds of arrows within every volley of arrows I threw at them.

Gradation parallel* allows me to trace multiple copies of my projection, set relative starting points, and apply vectors copied from the parent projection. Using this technique, I can mimic a battalion of archers raining arrows at their enemies.

As I provided cover to Fujimura and her companion, knowing that in a few seconds the fallen would probably reorganise and easily counter me, I began to trace an imaginary grid coordinate around the surrounding area using myself as its relative anchor.

Just as they started to reorganise themselves, I projected a pair of messers, reinforcing my body, directing prana into my inherited crest and accelerated towards Fujimura, batting away a spear of light just in the nick of time while I unfurled my devil wings to reveal to them what I am.

"My name is Emiya, Shirou. I regularly work with the Grigori, especially with your Governor General, Azazel. This area is also part of the Sitri and Gremory territory. You are all violating several signed treaties within our faction. Seize your actions this instant!"

Some of them immediately paused and looked at each other hesitantly. One of them, a blonde, petite-looking, fallen, mouthed 'Emiya?', at the blue-haired bombshell beside her. The name of my semi-adoptive father gives them a real reason to pause, as his name is infamous amongst those in the know.

The others paused as I dropped their Governor General's name, while some hesitated as they knew the in-faction war might restart if this wasn't handled delicately, while the remaining just didn't care as their eyes were now filled with bloodlust, probably at the thought of killing their centuries-old enemy.

"My name is Dohnaseek. We are under strict orders to eliminate that red-haired girl; this doesn't need to devolve into something our faction would go to war for. Just hand over the human to us, and we can just continue with all our lives."

The old-looking fallen, wearing a trench coat and a fedora, arrogantly sneered at me as he projected another spear of light; a majority of the fallen behind him copied his action.

"Under what authority and for what reason are you trying to kill someone under my protection. As you can see, she's a wand witch; any perceived criminal matter should go through their governing body."

I already see most of them tensing as they prepare. I already preloaded hundreds of swords within the imaginary grid I projected in my mind. All I need is to bring them into reality, and a hail of sharpened steel shall rain on them.

With a wave of his hand, a series of pops surrounded us, as more fallen and what looked like a squad of wand wizards teleported into the area.

"I have no time for this. It is more pertinent now that she is killed if she is already within the devil's influence."

Raising his hand, he prompted those who had not yet projected a spear of light to do so, while everyone else primed their attacks, awaiting their leader's signal.

"Last warning, I don't want to contribute to the Christian faction's dwindling population."

He just sneered more at my provocation, "Or what? From what I see here, there are about fifty of us here and just one of you. If you value your life, you'll just leave, Reynare, do it."

"....ugh"

To my horror, I hear the thump of a body hitting the ground as I see the lady with the dark hair dismiss a spear of light as she unfurls a pair of black feathered wings, and she takes flight.

Looking towards the ground, I see Fujimura, whose face is twisted in agony as she clutches at her chest, a pool of blood immediately forming around her.

"No!" Immediately projecting the only healing artefact I own, Avalon, I place it on top of Ritsuka, whose pained face slightly abates as I feed prana into Avalon.

"Hey! Stop him!" Not even acknowledging the fallen, I fully opened all magic pathways and unleashed the primed swords, bombarding the fallen and wizards with a rain of steel.

"...ah"

"Fuck!!"

"Move it!"

"No!!"

I continued my barrage as the sound of panic and the dying surrounded me, while I tried to pump more prana into the traced artefact, trying to increase its effectiveness to no avail.

My panic increased as I realised that at this point, I won't be able to heal her body before she runs out of blood, as her face turns paler and paler.

"Fujimura, just hold on for a second," I told her as her eyelids seemed to get heavier and heavier, ignoring the sound of pained cries, the calls for retreat, and the bodies falling from the sky.

Not releasing my hold on Avalon, I quickly surveyed my surroundings to check if there were any remaining threats, as what remains are just the agonised cries of the maimed and dying and the silence of the dead.

Satisfied with my initial survey, I stopped the bombardment. Projecting several swords at six equidistant points and using the sword as a focus, I channelled od and mana, moulding it into my pictured intent as a summoning circle formed, with a distress beacon tagged into it.

Turning my head back to the now ashen-faced Fujimura.

"Hold on just a little more, I already called for help."

-=&&=-

In what felt like an eternity, I finally spied a pair of silhouettes at the edge of the patch of forest I came from.

"Hey! Please, I need help," I called out to the pair, hoping that they were somebody who could help me, as nobody seemed to be appearing from the summoning circle.

I felt somewhat relieved as I immediately identified Rias, thanks to her family's distinctive red hair.

"Please, I still don't have my evil pieces. She's dying, and my artefact isn't capable of healing this much damage with my magic."

"Okay, I'll help you, but you'll owe me a lo-"

"I don't care how much I'll owe you, just help her now." A tinge of irritation and anger coloured my voice as I interrupted her bargaining.

Moving the sheath to her side, I continued to supply prana to the artefact as Fujimura's body continued to reject the ever-increasing number of pawns Rias was trying to apply.

Raising my brow incredulously at the number of pawns it took to convert Fujimura into a devil.
