"Hello, daughter," the person said, stepping through the smoke and rubble. "Did you miss me?"
Aria's world turned sideways. The sound was familiar, but impossible. Her mother had died when she was three. She remembered the funeral, the flowers, the tears.

The woman smiled, but her eyes were cold as winter ice. She looked exactly like the pictures Aria kept hidden under her mattress - same silver hair, same violet eyes, same delicate features.
But something was wrong. The woman's scent brought darkness, like flowers left too long in a grave.
"Many things are possible when you know the right secrets," her mother said, brushing dust from her black dress.
