Chapter 13: Spirit Medium
Mage!
Has one finally appeared?
In the Dark Ages, there were many supernatural professions.
They could be broadly divided into two systems: the mage system and other systems.
Mages were the most powerful profession throughout the Dark Ages, and also the profession the original owner most aspired to become.
Xu Le looked at this person, who wore a loose gray robe and a round-brimmed hat.
He appeared to be around 30 years old, with a pair of black-framed glasses perched on his high nose bridge.
He had a square face. Though his appearance was rather ordinary, one look at him inspired a sense of goodwill.
"Tell me the situation."
The mage's voice was very clear, without a hint of ambiguity.
This clear voice reminded him of a certain actor from his previous life known for his excellent line delivery.
As the gray-robed mage asked, the guard wasted no time:
"Mage, sir, when the spiritual energy bug was placed on this person, it immediately looked shriveled and near death.
This guy must have some issue. He's a Nightkeeper, possibly one of those contaminated by the Ancient Melody."
Xu Le felt it necessary to defend himself at this point.
"Hey hey, Mr. Guard.
I have no grudge against you, it's not right to make false accusations."
The guard wanted to say something more, but the middle-aged mage raised his hand, stopping the argument between the two.
"Wasting time on such meaningless things is not good behavior.
Guard, may I take a look at the spiritual energy bug?"
"Of course, Mage, sir."
The guard handed the bug to the mage, who took it and glanced at it casually:
"There's nothing wrong with the spiritual energy bug."
Then, he looked at Xu Le.
"Come here."
"Alright."
Xu Le didn't dare to be stubborn at this moment and honestly walked in front of the mage, allowing him to do as he pleased.
The other placed the spiritual energy bug on Xu Le again, this time not on his back, but on his chest.
Upon seeing the gunshot wound, the mage moved it slightly away before pressing it down.
Bzzt!
Xu Le seemed to hear the bug's cry of anguish. The cool sensation was also much stronger than before.
The spiritual energy bug died at a visible speed in front of everyone.
As for Xu Le, his eyebrows slightly raised.
It felt like reaching the peak of... something.
He wasn't sure before, but now he was certain what that feeling was.
The Ancient Melody's Soul Tree!
After seeing this scene, the guard hurriedly pointed at Xu Le:
"Mage, sir, it's just like this, he's just like this.
This person has a problem, definitely has a problem."
The guard was very happy now. In fact, he didn't care whether Xu Le had a problem or not.
What he cared about was whether he himself had a problem.
As long as it wasn't his own mistake, Xu Le's fate didn't matter at all. He quickly tried to pin all the blame on him.
However, the gray-robed mage didn't say much. He looked at the spiritual energy bug that had turned to ashes and raised his eyebrows:
"Interesting, interesting."
Xu Le looked at the mage, feeling anxious inside. What's so interesting? Just say it!
I hate people who speak in riddles the most.
"Mage, sir, have I done something wrong?"
The mage shook his head and reached out to put his hand on Xu Le's shoulder:
"Don't be nervous, young man. I mean no harm.
Tell me, what happened to you yesterday?"
Xu Le hesitated for a moment before speaking:
"Last night, we encountered an Anomaly!"
"We? Who are 'we'?"
"Me and Old Zhou."
"Tell me in detail about what happened last night.
No need to rush, take your time."
The mage's expression was very calm, as if nothing could make him nervous.
His words somehow made Xu Le feel at ease.
"This incident started with the first zombie we encountered last night..."
As a failed novel writer, Xu Le still had the ability to tell stories.
He vividly recounted the events of last night, though it was a modified version.
However, most of what he said was true.
The only false part was that he changed the main character who killed the zombie to Old Zhou.
"Old Zhou sacrificed himself to save me. It's all because I was too weak.
Before he left, Old Zhou asked me to take good care of his wife and daughter. I will definitely do so."
At this point, Xu Le clenched his fists tightly, his eyes seemingly filled with great determination.
The mage's eyes narrowed slightly, making Xu Le feel a bit dazed.
He didn't know how good his acting was, but he had a feeling.
The mage before him seemed to have seen through his thoughts.
"Are you very sad about Old Zhou's death?"
"Yes, Old Zhou was my friend despite our age difference. He was good to me and helped me with many things."
As they were talking, the guard beside them had already taken out some information about Old Zhou and Xu Le.
It had to be said that the Nightkeeper system of the Lighthouse had a very strong control over the entire city.
Although these materials were incomplete, they basically covered the life outlines of Xu Le and Zhou Ke.
After looking through the information, the mage's gaze finally settled on Xu Le.
Xu Le couldn't judge the other's thoughts from his eyes, he could only wait.
The air seemed to stagnate at this moment.
Suddenly, a cat's meow broke the silence, and everyone looked towards the direction of the cat's cry.
A black cat was walking along the wall, seemingly pawing at the leftover food discarded by the guards.
"What bad luck," one guard turned his head away.
The other guards had similar thoughts.
Black was unpopular in this era. The Nightkeepers used black only to blend into the night.
Animals like black cats were usually seen as ominous in the Lighthouse.
It was only natural that they were abandoned and became strays.
One of the guards even wanted to draw his gun to kill the cat, but was stopped by the mage.
"Alright, do one good deed a day, avoid one disaster a month.
Tomorrow night is the time of the Dark Tide. You're on guard duty here, it's better to avoid unnecessary killing."
Hearing the mage say this, the guard lowered his head in slight shame.
The others remained silent, not daring to speak.
Do one good deed a day, avoid one disaster a month?
Xu Le was curious about this saying. It sounded like something a feng shui master or fortune teller would say.
Could it be that this world also believed in such things?
At this moment, the mage had already turned his head to look at Xu Le:
"Alright, Xu Le, you've passed the spiritual energy test."
Hearing this, Xu Le felt somewhat delighted.
The whole process was much simpler than he had imagined.
"Is that all?"
"Yes, your spiritual energy state is very special, but it hasn't exceeded the normal human range.
You have all the emotions of a normal person, they're just blocked by some kind of power.
This might be a kind of innate ability, you don't need to be too surprised.
Deep Blue produces many talented young people every year, Xu Le, I think you might be one of them."
The mage suddenly said a lot to Xu Le, which made him feel a bit overwhelmed.
He was genuinely grateful to this mage:
"Thank you very much, Mage, sir. Can I leave now?"
The mage suddenly smiled:
"You don't need to thank me, it's my duty.
As for leaving, hehe, I can only say you're thinking too much.
Besides the spiritual energy check, you still have many other examinations to undergo.
Spiritual energy is just the simplest one."
Xu Le's mouth started to twitch:
"The simplest one?"
"Yes, the simplest one. Oh right, my name is Gan.
I'm a spirit medium."
