Chapter 47 - CHAPTER 47

c47: Miss Chen Xiaoxiao Is Very Angry, And the Consequences Are Serious

Half an hour passed.

"This is Squirtle it evolves into Wartortle, and then into Blastoise. Have you seen it before?"

At this point, Chen Xiaoxiao stood in front of a perfectly aligned formation of over a dozen Gyarados. She held her Pokédex in hand, flipping through entries of various Water-type Starter Pokémon (Yusanjia), showing them detailed images.

"(No!)" ×10+

The Gyarados looked at each one with wide eyes, heads bobbing in unison as they denied recognition.

"No? Fine. Then what about this one? Totodile, evolves into Croconaw, and then Feraligatr. Familiar?"

Unfazed by their cluelessness, Chen Xiaoxiao simply moved to the next Water-type line, showing them the Johto starters on her screen.

"(No!)" ×10+

Another wave of synchronized head-shaking. Still no recognition.

"Still not ringing a bell? Okay, what about Mudkip? It becomes Marshtomp, then Swampert. Seen it?"

Chen Xiaoxiao scrolled through to the next region's trio, showing the Hoenn starter evolution line one by one.

"(No!)" ×10+

Once again, the Gyarados all responded in unison, their large, serpentine bodies awkwardly swaying to match their collective negative.

"Nothing again? Well, never mind. Swampert's strong, yeah, but that hulking, tank-like build might not be ideal for Stephanie's future son-in-law. Too much brute-force. Doesn't exactly scream elegance, even if it looks secure and dependable."

Chen Xiaoxiao muttered the last part to herself, briefly recalling Swampert's bulky, intimidating appearance.

"What about this one? Piplup, evolves into Prinplup, and finally Empoleon. Has a royal bearing. Ring any bells?"

She held up the Sinnoh trio next. The image of Empoleon, standing regal and upright like a steel-clad emperor, gleamed on the screen.

"(No!)" ×10+

Still no change. The Gyarados each let out short growls and shook their massive heads yet again.

"This is the last group. This is Froakie, which evolves into Frogadier, then becomes Greninja. Well? Have. You. Seen. It. OR—!?"

By now, Chen Xiaoxiao's patience had evaporated. She had gone through six generations of starters already this was the seventh and final one. Her expression darkened as she slowly enunciated each word, glaring at the Gyarados squad with a shadowed face.

The Gyarados instantly felt the rising pressure. They hesitated. For a moment, no one dared to respond.

Eventually, all the others turned toward their leader the Level 71 Elite-Advanced Gyarados, the same one that had "cooperated" previously under Solgaleo's... persuasive diplomacy.

"(Still haven't seen it...)"

The lead Gyarados forced a low, awkward growl as a response, speaking for the group while trying to avoid Chen Xiaoxiao's gaze.

"Solgaleo."

The once-gentle Miss Chen Xiaoxiao now summoned her hidden trump card with an icy tone that echoed across the sea. She called out Solgaleo's name with the chilling finality of a court sentence.

With a flash of light, Solgaleo burst from his Poké Ball, fur shimmering with celestial energy, golden eyes narrowing as he stepped forward. The air around him tensed as if charged with stardust and thunder.

Though Solgaleo didn't move, the intimidation was more than enough.

"(We really haven't seen it!)" ×10+

The once-fierce Gyarados now panicked. They backed away frantically, swaying their massive serpentine bodies, heads shaking desperately, fangs bared in fear. Their synchronized denial this time came with noticeable distress.

"You mean to tell me," Chen Xiaoxiao's voice cut like a blade, "you're the totem Pokémon of this entire ocean stretch, yet not one of you has ever seen any of these so-called 'common' Pokémon?!"

Her voice rose. Solgaleo gave a roar in solidarity, vibrating with metallic resonance as if to underscore her fury.

With Miss Chen Xiaoxiao now standing at the edge of full-on blackening mode, and Solgaleo roaring beside her like a cosmic guardian, the Gyarados could only cower under the pressure.

The only thing they could do was express their collective anguish, still repeating that they had never seen the Pokémon in question.

Meanwhile, buried deep in their hearts, the Gyarados couldn't help grumbling to themselves:

Are these really 'common' Pokémon?

If they were truly that common, why would Chen Xiaoxiao, of all people—the terrifying, powerful, and commanding Trainer who even Gyarados respected—go this far just to look for one?

Surely she wouldn't be interested in something truly ordinary?

(Gyarados are bitter... and probably right.)

What exactly is going on at this moment?

It turned out that after Chen Xiaoxiao defeated the leader Gyarados earlier, during the challenge she issued, she'd made a simple request: if she won, the leader Gyarados would owe her a small favor to help her locate a specific kind of Pokémon!

After the intense battle where Metagross narrowly triumphed using strategic Thunder Punch and Hyper Beam combinations Chen Xiaoxiao had Gardevoir heal the injured Gyarados right away. Then, wasting no time, she asked the leader to gather his clan members.

Pokémon, especially wild ones like Gyarados, are honorable in their own way. When they promise to help after a defeat, they follow through. Not to mention Chen Xiaoxiao sweetened the deal with high-grade Energy Cubes as a reward!

True to his word, the leader Gyarados immediately summoned his "brothers" from nearby waters an entire pod of elite and advanced-level Gyarados—without hesitation.

And that's when the situation unfolded as described above.

Who says all Water-type Pokémon have to be caught the hard way? Rather than wander aimlessly with a slim chance of encountering the right one, Chen Xiaoxiao used her wit relying instead on the "local boss" Gyarados to help her search!

These Gyarados have lived in this section of the ocean for decades. They've survived tides, Trainers, and territorial clashes with Lapras and Tentacruel. If there's a Water-type Pokémon out there, they should have seen it.

And yet shockingly this group of powerful Gyarados, known as regional totems, had not encountered even a single wild Yusanjia (starter Pokémon)!

(Of course, this applies strictly to wild ones. Trained Gyarados that battled alongside human Trainers have encountered them before—even fought Greninja or Empoleon in high-level matches. But Chen Xiaoxiao explicitly asked for wild, unowned specimens. And from the perspective of wild Gyarados, who don't interact with land-based ecosystems often, these Pokémon were simply unfamiliar.)

Miss Chen Xiaoxiao was clearly displeased!

And the consequences were very serious!

There was even a faint crackle of electricity running along Solgaleo's radiant mane!

The Gyarados trembled.

Still, Chen Xiaoxiao wasn't really angry at the Gyarados. She understood—they'd made an effort. Releasing Solgaleo was simply her way of expressing disappointment, not actual fury.

After all, it wasn't the Gyarados' fault for not spotting something so rare. Beating them up wouldn't make a Froakie or Piplup appear.

"Huff..."

Chen Xiaoxiao exhaled deeply, composing herself. She then reopened her Pokédex, scrolled back to the Water-type Pokémon section, and began searching through potential candidates one by one.

"The Starter Pokémon aren't working out. I guess... I'll need to lower the standard a bit."

She muttered to herself, but her tone still carried determination.

As she flipped through the entries, her eyes suddenly lit up at the sight of one particular Water-type. A memory flashed the evolution item for that Pokémon was in a collection passed down by her elders!

"What about this one? Ever seen it?"

With renewed energy, Chen Xiaoxiao zoomed in on the Pokédex image and mounted Togekiss, gliding above the formation of Gyarados while displaying the image clearly in front of each one.

Finally, as she hovered before the second-to-last Gyarados in the line a relatively younger one, just elite-level its eyes widened in recognition.

"(I've seen this one before!)"

The elite Gyarados roared with excitement, almost leaping from the water.

Chen Xiaoxiao's eyes sparkled instantly. The other Gyarados turned to their peer with expressions of admiration clearly impressed that he remembered.

"Where did you see it? Can you take me there now?"

Chen Xiaoxiao leaned forward, questioning urgently.

"(Of course! I saw it while passing through a large school of Magikarp the next generation. It showed up nearby!)"

The Gyarados growled out his response eagerly.

"Perfect! Thank you! Here, eat something first! Take me there afterward and I'll give you even more!"

Overjoyed with the lead, Chen Xiaoxiao immediately pulled out a pouch of Advanced Water-type Energy Cubes, distributing them generously to the Gyarados especially the one who recognized the target Pokémon.

As for why not use Apex-grade Energy Cubes?

Chen Xiaoxiao had a practical response: forget it! A single Apex cube cost several valuable points. Too expensive!

She had seven Pokémon, each eating four meals a day, costing nearly 200 points per day. It just wasn't sustainable.

Even the Apex cubes she had used earlier while fishing for rare Water-types had been carefully divided into dozens of smaller portions.

(Each Energy Cube is about the size of a fist. Split into thumb-sized pieces, they're still potent and satisfying. Nothing wrong with being economical.)

"(Follow us!)"

The Gyarados, now fed and happy, turned to Chen Xiaoxiao and gave a hearty roar. Then, they dove into the sea, cutting through the waves as they began leading the way straight toward the part of the ocean where their younger generation of Magikarp had been seen schooling.

Chen Xiaoxiao followed, eyes filled with determination once again.
