Chapter 23 - Stabbed cracks

"You assholes!"

"Capture him alive." Enojar's aged voice sounded in their savage minds, and they proceeded.

A spike of rock rose from the ground and jetted to Mike, and a swing of his chains broke it to pieces with some little shards tearing into his face.

Then came a simultaneous attack of wind and fire, and Mike's chains responded with a thrust that drained the blasts of their energies, shrinking them to nothing.

The earth below him jutted, a thousand earthen stakes protruded, and Mike escaped with a backflip, however not without sustaining ugly scratches at his back and his left thigh. The pain barely bothered him, and he pushed on. He flipped in the air, his dominant right leg raised, and he struck it on the ground, bringing with him a powerful sweeping vertical wind blast that broke the beasts formation.

He sent two air punches, one beast stopped the onslaught with a wall of earth, the other redirected it to Mike who simply tilted to his right to avoid the blow.

A blast of fire came at him, and he conjured a pocket of wind over him, intercepting the fiery blast. His chains creeped from his flanks and lunged at the beasts. The group, all of them, were swift enough to move out of harm's way. They understood the powers of the chains, how they were close to invincible, and their target had to be the fleshy creature they could hurt, but a question could be posed. What would happen to the chains should the creature lose consciousness?

The flame torrent stopped, Mike was given leeway for an attack. He went low, and he lowered his body until he was merely two feet executing a move he commonly saw with dancers and acrobats, spinning and sweeping his legs, and sending gusts of sweeping wind.

Those flexible and swift enough to avoid it did—eight of them, and four got flipped and thrown to the ground.

The crimson chains found an opportunity and leapt on it. They zoomed to the fallen beasts, eager to run through them and absorb all of their radiance.

The others saw this, and Enuma made a mental command through their telepathic link. J

"Protect them!"

They understood that their numbers was the only advantage they had against this behemoth, and they could not afford to lose that.

The one with the lightning attack earlier had been able to evade the sweeping wind attack and it hurled towards the others, lightning coursing through its massive legs. It slung two on its back and ran a distance before having them on their feet.

A wind move redirected a chain, and a thick earthen wall created in front of one bought it enough time to escape. So, though the crimson chains were largely impervious to radiance-charged attacks, they could be slowed by them.

Mike leapt backwards, creating significant distance between him and his want-to-be captors, he could turn and make a run for it, and with the boost his radiance charged his body with, he could outrun them. He did not do that however, and instead, he eyed the fiery wolf, Hesk.

'It must be their leader, and perhaps if it falls, the rest will follow.'

He needed to cut through the formation and cripple it, and the fastest way to do that would be to get rid of the head.

His chains read his mind and sprang into action. Two thrust forward, striking the soil and sinking into it, and then they pulled Mike forward, launching him at Hesk.

The creature had its tongue out like dogs do, and when Mike came, it grinned. It saw through Mike's plan, and lept out of the way instead of attacking as Mike had hoped.

In the air, it spun, and raised its hind legs, sending paws of fire. Mike's radiant force field intercepted the paws easily.

The radiant beasts swiftly huddled behind their eldest brother. The battle was at a stalemate, and they would need to introduce an element of surprise to get any edge against the monster that was Mike.

Mike held out his hands, large circles of wind escaping them and brushing against his opponents and the vegetation about him.

Behind him, trees and bushes burnt, beasts radiant and non-radiant alike scampered in fear, it was horrific and Enojar relished in the sight from where he watched.

"He is a monster just like I was." His tumored face relaxed to a smile.

Mike raised his right arm, and a circling blast of wind struck the trees at the area, reducing them to prickly wood and splinters. He thrust his left, releasing a wave that swallowed the branches, torn trunks and splinters, he hurled them and directed them at the group.

Possessed Logg stepped forward and with a stomp of its two front legs, a wall of earth sprouted from the ground in front of them just in time to fend off the attack. Mike knew they would be able to counterattack the attack, but the move had served its purpose, and it was not to hurt them, but to create a blind spot he could exploit.

A chain pierced through the earthen wall and into Logg's skull, killing it in an instant, and its radiance streamed into Mike. The other chains came forward, breaking through the wall, and approaching the shocked radiant beasts.

They were quick on their feet and managed to escape the chains until another was hit and killed.

Enuma struggled to maintain control, they ought to feel no fear, but they were still wired to sustain themselves and survive, and that was enough to find cracks within them.

Mike had learnt that he had to be merciless to survive here. Everything had been cruel to him, and he did not have the luxury of bargaining his life on hesitation.

The chains felt his desperation, the drive and hatred coursing through them and they sprang without stopping, without ceasing, desperate and mind-drunk on their thirst for the creatures' radiance.

"Enuma, you must get him to me." Enojar's chilling voice played in the creature's mind. It understood what had to be done.
