Chapter 29 - First Day, First Test

The morning air clung cool against the breeze as Riku Yamadera stood just outside the gates of Tokyo Jujutsu High, hands in his pockets, black hoodie unzipped, the faint trace of a smirk tugging at the edge of his lips. The tall, ivy-covered walls of the campus stretched ahead, and somewhere beyond them, the main storyline had finally begun.

He took a long breath in, his blank black eyes scanning the compound, and muttered, "Well... time to officially join the chaos."

The gates creaked open with a lazy groan, and standing there waiting was none other than Gojo Satoru, sunglasses replaced by his signature blindfold, white hair catching the sunlight like frost in motion. He held a paper cup of coffee and smiled as if he'd just woken from a nap on a cloud.

"You came," Gojo said, sipping. "And here I thought you'd chicken out."

Riku shrugged. "You gave me the location. Would've been rude not to drop by."

Gojo chuckled. "You've got that polite edge to you. Like someone trying real hard not to say they're too cool for school."

"Maybe I am," Riku quipped.

The walk through the courtyard was quiet, save for the chirping birds and distant rustle of wind through the trees. Gojo gestured lazily to the grounds.

"Welcome to Tokyo Jujutsu High. You'll meet the other students soon, but first… let's see what you've got."

"Right now?" Riku raised a brow. "Don't I at least get a tour first?"

Gojo grinned, a little too wide. "Consider this part of the tour."

The makeshift sparring field was open and cleared, grass trimmed short, sun casting sharp shadows across the space. Standing nearby were four students, each giving Riku varying looks of curiosity.

Maki Zenin stood with her arms crossed, glasses perched on her nose, eyes narrowed with a calculating gaze. Panda loomed behind her, massive and relaxed, though clearly interested. Nobara Kugisaki leaned on one leg, tapping her cheek with a finger, smirking. And Toge Inumaki stood quietly, scarf up to his nose.

Riku glanced at them, nodding slightly. "So this is the squad, huh."

Maki clicked her tongue. "You don't look like much."

"Appreciate the honesty," Riku said casually.

"Konbu," Toge greeted, a small wave.

"Yo," Riku returned.

Gojo clapped once, loudly. "Alright! For today's entertainment—and I do mean entertainment—we'll have a little spar. Two-on-one. Riku here versus our first-years, Megumi and Yuji."

Megumi stepped forward, already summoning the faint shadows of his Ten Shadows Technique. Yuji jogged in place, a lazy grin on his face.

"You ready?" Yuji asked, stretching his neck with a few pops.

Riku rolled his shoulders. "Should be fun."

"Don't hold back too much," Megumi said, watching him carefully. "We'll come at you for real."

Riku didn't reply. Instead, he stepped into position, feet light, his posture loose and deceptive. Internally, he had already begun pushing cursed energy into his limbs, layering it with invisible Armament Haki. The Batman's 127 Fighting Styles skill already had him switching mental gears, recalling dozens of martial systems simultaneously. He wasn't going to use Flash Step. No Cursed Technique either. But even while holding back, he wasn't going to make it easy.

Gojo raised his hand, then dropped it with a playful, "And—begin!"

Yuji burst forward with a powerful sprint, fists raised, body moving with sheer explosive momentum. Riku didn't move until the last second, tilting his head just enough for Yuji's punch to graze air, then pivoted on one foot and redirected Yuji's balance with a palm strike to the ribs.

Yuji grunted, stumbling back.

Megumi was already on the move, a shikigami materializing from the shadows—a twin-tailed serpent coiled around his arm, ready to strike.

Riku ducked low, weaving between the lunges of both boy and beast, slipping into a Jeet Kune Do stance. His footwork was tight, responsive, always shifting. When Megumi's toad leapt forward, Riku sidestepped and planted a sharp jab into its snout with a cursed energy-coated knuckle, sending it skidding into dust before it poofed out of existence.

From the side, Nobara whistled. "Okay, not bad."

Maki's eyes narrowed. "He's too relaxed. He's not even serious."

Yuji came again, fists flying in a wild flurry. This time Riku caught one, twisted Yuji's wrist just enough to break his stance, and swept his legs with a fast, brutal Capoeira spin. Yuji hit the dirt, grinning through the pain.

"Man, you're really good," Yuji huffed, rolling back up.

Riku didn't reply. His eyes flicked briefly to Megumi, who had begun positioning his shadow behind him. He was up to something.

Riku lunged toward Yuji again, baiting the Fushiguro to react—and he did. A rabbit escape formation exploded out of the shadow in a cloud of smoke and screeching cries. Riku's vision blurred for a second.

He covered his eyes instinctively—then slipped into a Wing Chun guard, blocking three incoming strikes from Yuji, countering each with fast, snapping punches to the body. Yuji winced.

Sukuna's voice rang out in Yuji's head.

"Brat… that one's dangerous."

Yuji blinked.

"Tch. That cursed energy... no technique? No markings? Just raw skill. Let me out. I want to fight him."

Yuji grunted, "Shut up, not now."

"Come on… just five seconds. I'll make it fun."

"Absolutely not."

Meanwhile, Riku was already adapting again. He switched to Northern Praying Mantis, landing a sharp elbow into Megumi's side before pivoting to an Aikido throw and launching Yuji into a shallow roll across the ground.

Panda rumbled a laugh. "They're getting pieced up."

"Shake," Toge muttered with concern.

Megumi stepped forward again, sweat on his brow. "He's not even using a technique…"

Riku stopped, letting his hands fall to his sides. "You guys good? Or do you want to keep going?"

Yuji stood, panting. "Nah, I'm not done yet."

Riku exhaled, his tone almost amused. "Alright. Let's wrap this up, then."

They rushed him one more time, Megumi calling another shikigami—a massive bird that swooped low—while Yuji leapt off its back like a springboard. Riku stepped between their timings perfectly, dipping low and planting a cursed energy uppercut into Yuji's gut that lifted him into the air. As Megumi tried to catch him, Riku swept his legs out in a perfect judo foot trap, slamming him flat.

Gojo clapped slowly from the sidelines. "Alright, that's enough."

Yuji groaned, arms over his chest. "Damn… okay, yeah. He's a monster."

Riku offered him a hand. Yuji took it, and Riku pulled him up.

Megumi stood too, brushing off dirt. "You're hiding something."

"Shake," Toge added, nodding at Gojo.

Gojo walked over, smug grin plastered on his face. "You're hiding something… but I like mysteries."

Riku just smiled. "Let's keep it interesting."

Behind him, Nobara crossed her arms. "So, what's your deal, Riku Yamadera?"

He shrugged. "I'm just a guy who knows how to fight."

But inside, he was already calculating. 'So this is the level of the first-years now. If things follow the story, what's coming next is going to be wild. I need to push even harder.'
