Alice pushed open the door, running after the nurse. The guards followed closely behind her, pursuing the nurse, but she took a turn and all of a sudden, she was gone—like she was never there in the first place.
"Ma'am, we can't see her anymore," the guard said, looking around the corner she had just run to.
"There's no problem. She wasn't able to do what she came to do."
Alice rushed back to the room to check on the well-being of her father. She put her hand on him, checking his pulse, and it was strong. She blew a huge breath of relief.
She moved by his bedside, picking up the syringe full of a strange-smelling liquid. She handed it to one of the guards.
"I want you to go to the lab and find out the contents of that. Now."
"Yes, ma'am."
Alice sat down by the edge of her father's bed, and then he stirred.
"Alice, is that you?" he murmured.
"I'm here, Dad. It's me. Do you want anything? Are you comfortable?" she said, fluffing his pillows.
"I'm fine."
