"It appears that affluent woman with the Porsche is the bride-to-be," Mark said in a teasing tone, and I saw Dr. Davies Miller grip his beer bottle so tightly I was shocked it didn't shatter in his hand.
I reached out and grabbed his bottle as his eyes met mine. "I'll hold it for you, boss," I told Dr. Davies Miller because I knew where he was heading.
Straight for the dance floor to get the girl Mark was following.
I downed my beer and ordered another, enjoying sitting at the bar by myself.
I didn't feel like being social.
My phone buzzed across the bar top, and I checked the message.
I should turn it off because I knew it could only be one person, but like a masochist, I clicked the message.
Dan: "Darling, please respond to my text. You have me concerned."
He's freaking worried?
Is he worried while he's got his cock in some other woman's pussy?
The thought knocked the air out of my lungs.
I motioned for another drink, and Jake dropped it down in front of me moments later.
Dr. Davies Miller sat down next to me, and I didn't comment on where the little blonde went.
Heck, I even saw Mark behind me in the mirror over the bar, hitting on some woman.
Are all men alike?
I can't believe I let myself think I found something different.
My phone buzzed again.
Dan: "Damn it, Joey, answer me or I am going to punish you when I get my hands on you."
How can he freaking talk to me like that when he's out with another woman!
Me: "Why don't you punish the woman you were having dinner with? You know, the one you introduced to your family."
With that, I powered off my phone.
I didn't want to read his excuses, or worse, see that he doesn't respond at all.
He probably knows he got busted, so I'm sure he's done with me.
"Sheryl White," Dr. Davies Miller mumbled next to me for the tenth time since he sat down, taking another pull from his beer.
"If you utter that word one more time, I am going to push you off that freaking stool," I told him. Can't we both wallow in our misery in silence?
I'm just thankful the bar finally turned the music down since the bachelorette party left.
"I made a mistake," Dr. Davies Miller said, looking over at me while I fiddled with the paper on my beer bottle.
I pulled it off and stuck it back on, annoyed at everything.
"Yes, you did. You pursued something you cannot possess and should not desire," I told him as I met his eyes.
We both went after people who were out of our league and in a class we'd never understand.
Dan may just be a Doctor, but he comes from old money. Heck, his dad is the darn owner of the only hospital in the region.
"Good evening, Dr. How may I assist you tonight?" the bartender said.
My eyes snapped to the mirror behind the bar, and I saw Dan standing five feet back from Dr. Davies Miller and me.
My whole body locked up, and I grabbed my beer, wanting something to hold on to.
Keep calm, I repeated over and over again in my head.
I've given him enough of myself.
I won't give him anymore.
He's already seen parts of me no one else ever has.
The girl who lies beneath my layers.
One who is going back into hiding to lick her wounds.
"Just checking on matters," Dan responded, and I could feel his eyes on me.
I tried to pretend he's not there until he spoke right to me. "How are you doing, Joey?"
My heart clenched at the use of my name.
It bothered me at first when he called me that, like he knew me, but over the past few weeks, I've grown to love it.
Crave him saying it.
When we'd make love and he'd call it out, it was like the sweetest thing I've never known.
I still refused to meet his eyes in the mirror and just went on ignoring him.
I can't believe he's doing this in the middle of the bar for everyone to see.
Before today I wouldn't have thought it a big deal, but after seeing him out with the other woman, the pieces clicked into place.
He didn't want people to know we were together. How didn't I see it before?
I was too content to spend our time together just holed up in his home, in his bed.
Instead of answering him, I just gave him the middle finger.
Because that's what he could do. Go away.
"Joey, darling, do not—"
"Darling—" Dr. Davies Miller tried to interject, but I cut them both off.
"What in the world are you doing here, Dan? I am quite certain stalking is against the law."
The bar had become eerily quiet now, and I knew everyone was watching what's happening.
"Jake, is my god- sister present? I thought they came in here tonight," Dan said, annoying me even more.
He has a freaking sister?
Dan knows everything about me, and I didn't even know he had a darn god sister .
Oh, I know why, there's no point in introducing Joey because you'll never meet her. You're just the Doctor's dirty secret he sleeps with out in his cabin.
"Was she with that bachelorette party?"
"That would have been them. She is the bachelorette."
I almost wanted to laugh at the irony of Dan's words. Dr. Davies Miller and I had been sitting at the bar, moping about a brother and sister who were way out of our range.
But I had a feeling that won't stop Dr. Davies Miller from getting his Duchess.
As for me, my ego can't handle another round of being used. I might shatter.
"They departed here approximately two hours ago," Jake said, pouring a glass of cheap whiskey.
"All right, I was just checking in before I head home for the night."
I couldn't help but snort at his words, not believing him. "Probably going to be sleeping with his date tonight since he won't be sleeping with me," I mumbled to myself.
"Joey, may I have a private word with you outside?" I wanted to scream at him.
Of course, so no one sees the
doctor is slumming it, but I couldn't ignore him.
He's still the Doctor.
