Chapter 40 - The Weight Of Pretending

The ocean stretched endlessly beyond the glass walls, waves crashing against jagged rocks far below like distant echoes of a storm neither of them could escape. The morning light spilled into the room, golden and soft—but it only served to mock the stillness in the air.

Sofia stirred beneath the linen sheets, her skin still warm from the night before, the ache in her body a reminder of something that had felt almost real—until now.

Adam stood by the edge of the balcony, shirtless, arms braced against the stone railing. The breeze tousled his hair, but his expression remained unshaken, carved from the same cold marble as the cliffs below.

She watched him for a moment. Silent. Hopeful. Foolish.

Then he turned around.

"It's best we don't repeat what happened last night," he said flatly, not even bothering to step back inside. His voice cut through the hush like broken glass. "It changes nothing."
