Chapter 65: Season 2 – Episode 8

Whispers in the Dark

---

The city's pulse had returned, but its veins were still bleeding.

Flickers of static danced across every screen, and whispers filled the encrypted channels once belonging to the Revenant. Though his body had fallen, his echo remained — scattered fragments, corrupted code hiding in the corners of cyberspace, like ghosts refusing to die.

In a dim, candle-lit hideout beneath the ruins of Old Sector Seven, Julian stared at a wall of monitors. The kill code had worked… but only on the surface.

"They're still moving," he muttered. "The Wraiths. Nyra. They're not slowing down. If anything, they're accelerating."

Eve entered, her expression unreadable. "I decrypted part of the Revenant's remaining signal. Someone… something else is speaking through it."

Reese raised a brow. "You mean someone picked up the remains of his mind and hit play?"

Eve hesitated. "More like… they responded. The signal is two-way now."

---

Meanwhile, across the city in an abandoned cathedral warped by time and neglect, Nyra stood beneath a stained-glass window shattered by past conflict. A group of hooded figures surrounded her, cloaked in shadow and silence.

She spoke with purpose, voice calm yet charged with venom.

"The Revenant was never meant to last. He was just a messenger."

One of the figures stepped forward. "The message was received. The city's defenders grow tired. Scattered. Vulnerable."

Nyra nodded. "Then it's time. Awaken the Obsidian Protocol."

A quiet murmur rippled through the room.

"The Red Eye was just the beginning."

---

Back at their hideout, Julian turned to the team.

"We need help. More than just the three of us."

Eve agreed. "I've already reached out. There's someone—deep in the shadows of the digital underground. They call her Cipher. She used to work with the Wraiths… before they turned her into a target."

Reese scoffed. "That name sounds like someone who eats firewalls for breakfast."

Julian smirked. "Then let's hope she's still hungry."

---

Their search took them to the city's lowest depths — into tunnels forgotten even by the ghosts of war. Layers of time hung in the air like dust, and every corner reeked of betrayal.

After hours of searching, they reached a rusted hatch sealed with a keypad coded in obsolete encryption.

Eve knelt, fingers dancing across her device. "Give me a minute…"

The hatch hissed open before she could finish.

A voice spoke from the shadows: "You took your time."

A figure emerged — a woman with short silver hair, one eye replaced with a glowing lens, her arms sleeved in nano-tattoos that pulsed with data.

"I'm Cipher," she said coolly. "And you just made the most dangerous decision of your lives."

---

Julian stepped forward. "We're trying to stop Nyra and the Wraiths from launching the Obsidian Protocol."

Cipher's expression didn't change. "Then you're already too late."

She tapped her temple. A hologram bloomed from her lens, revealing a countdown.

T-minus 72 hours.

Initiation: Obsidian Protocol.

Target: Global mainframe access.

Reese paled. "They're not just after the city. They're coming for the whole damn world."

Cipher nodded grimly. "And if you want a chance in hell to stop them… you're going to need to go deeper. Into the Dark Grid. The original source code."

Julian exchanged a look with Eve and Reese. "Then let's dive."
