Chapter 6 - Beyond the surface

Anon's mother, Lux Aeterna, slipped out of the mansion before dawn, the warm sunlight casting a golden glow on her face as she breathed in the crisp morning air, filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers. Known to most as Lea, a name she used to hide her true identity, she was bored and didn't want to distract her son from his intense training to suppress his power. Only a select few, including Anon and Luna, knew her true identity as Lux Aeterna.

As she walked into the grand hall of the castle, the sound of her heels echoed off the marble floors, the high ceilings and chandeliers making her feel small. "What should I do?" she wondered, her voice barely above a whisper. That's when she spotted Luna walking into the castle, her long, dark hair cascading down her back like a waterfall. Lea's eyes lit up as she called out to her. "Hey, Luna, it's me!" Luna's face broke into a warm smile as she recognized Anon's mother.

The two women walked together, Luna noticing Lea's fascination with the hall's pristine whiteness. The walls, adorned with intricate carvings, shone like freshly fallen snow, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers. "I see you're a fan of the color white," Luna observed, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "This hall is indeed breathtaking." Lea smiled, her face radiant. "Yes, I find it soothing. It's like a breath of fresh air."

As they strolled through the castle grounds, Lea's eyes sparkled with excitement whenever she saw something white – delicate porcelain vases, intricately designed white marble statues, and even a white peacock strutting across the lawn. Her love for white had become an obsession. Eventually, they decided to take a break and grab some refreshments at a nearby café.

Over steaming cups of tea and delicate pastries, Lea turned to Luna and asked, "Hey, can you share with me about your goals and what makes you pursue them?" Luna hesitated at first, her eyes clouding over. "No, I don't think I can share that with you. Knowing about my dreams and goals won't benefit you in any way." Lea's gentle smile put Luna at ease. "You're right, I won't benefit from it directly, but it would help me understand you better. Everything, even things that aren't white, has something beautiful inside."

Luna's reserve slowly melted away, and she began to share her story. "Since I was a child, every child my age didn't understand me at all. The way I think, see things, and hope for things are not like a child. Everyone around me said I'm special and different, but it wasn't a compliment. I longed for normalcy, for friends and laughter. But I was always alone. My dream was to look up at the stars closely, to feel the vastness of the universe. That's why I escaped from my kingdom and ended up here, in Goret, as the adopted daughter of the king. And since that dream to see the stars closely has been fulfilled, I've decided to follow my new goals and fulfill them."

Lea's eyes shone with fascination. "That's a beautiful goal. Most people would answer with a specific dream, but you... you're different. Like a ray of white light, pure and untainted. But you're not special; every person has something special in them. So don't worry about that, Luna – you're normal, except for Anon, of course." Luna's face softened, and she felt a sense of connection with Lea.

As they continued their conversation, Luna asked Lea about her relationship with Anon. "Am I right to assume you care for him?" Lea's expression turned introspective. "As his mother, it's natural for me to care for him." Luna pressed on, her curiosity getting the better of her. "I've heard you call him 'abnormal.' Why is that?"

Lea's eyes clouded over, and she hesitated before speaking. "It's... complicated," Lea began, her voice barely above a whisper. "When Anon first came into my life, I thought he was a blessing and a compensation for my patience. When I gained immense power, it became almost impossible for us to get pregnant and bear a child because we're unable to produce life or soul. But thanks to his father, who has a unique power that no one could use – the power to make life – I gave birth to Anon."

Luna's eyes locked onto Lea's, curiosity burning within her. "Did you really give birth to Anon in a normal way?" she asked, her voice gentle. Lea's expression turned solemn, and she nodded slowly. "No, it wasn't a normal birth. My husband's power to create life it's not just about producing a physical body. It's about merging part our souls, our essence, to create a new life. Anon is a product of our combined part souls, a unique blend of our essences. That's why he's so special, and that's why his power is so unpredictable." Luna's eyes widened in understanding, her mind reeling with the implications.

Lea continued, her voice filled with a mix of emotions. "When I tried to look at his past, I saw many pasts, histories, events, and sad and happy endings from Anon's life," Lea said, her eyes welling up with tears. "I don't know how he had many endings and different pasts, all of it from different names, identities, and personalities. Those things I saw changed what I used to see my own child."

Lea's voice cracked as she spoke about Anon's father. "His father, with his power to determine others' abilities, saw Anon's ability and called it 'I Know Myself.' Those were the words he got from Anon, as if saying that he is the only one who knows who he was and what he is. That power is the reason why my husband sacrificed himself to seal that terrifying power of our son." Luna's heart went out to Lea, and she felt a deep sense of empathy towards her.

"From then, I abandoned him and chose to become a goddess, to forget about him and his father," Lea said, her voice barely above a whisper. "He is abnormal, and there's no changing that fact." Luna's face reflected her concern and understanding. She couldn't imagine what it would be like to have such a powerful and complex child.

As they finished their tea, Lea asked Luna to keep a certain secret – a secret that Anon had many pasts and different endings from different persons. Luna nodded, her eyes locked on Lea's, and promised to keep it hidden. "I won't say anything to Anon," Luna promised. "Your secret is safe with me." Lea nodded, a small smile on her face. "Thank you, Luna. I trust you."

Their conversation had forged a bond between them, a bond that would last a lifetime. As they parted ways, Luna felt a sense of gratitude towards Lea. She had shared a part of herself, and in return, Lea had given her a glimpse into Anon's mysterious past. From that day on, Luna looked at Anon in a different light. She realized that there was more to him than met the eye, and she felt a sense of responsibility to help him uncover the truth about his past.

As Luna walked back to the castle, she couldn't help but wonder about Anon's past and the secrets that lay hidden. She felt a sense of determination to help him uncover the truth, no matter what it might be.
