Chapter 1 - Prologue

A busy morning, as usual. Horns and broken symphonies echoes throughout, even within our apartment. But it smells good, truly. Bacons, eggs, and a bit of coffee on the side. Usual, yet delicious breakfast. The food smokes, signifying it's still hot, but I couldn't care less. I have been starving.

A few hours moreand my clock soon will ticks, work as usual. Still, with my wife's food as my lunch? Yessir.

I grab the egg, yellow on the side. We don't use butter, but we get enough with salt and pepper. Bacon taste like pork, naturally. It's just unusually delicious, cause my wife's eating with me.

Most of the time, we don't eat together, primarily cause I always eat fast. Not right now though, I have enough time.

I complimented my wife's cooking, "This really taste good."

But she replied with, "It's just the same." With a forced smile, I can see.

Despite that initial suspicion, I dig in.

Until, she utter a phrase, "Honey, how would you react if I tell you I have a lover?"

The broken sound turned deafening silence, as if I am underwater. My vision's edge seem to have darken as I try to continue eating my fast.

I didn't just hear that. I thought so to myself.

"I... have someone else." Yet she utters it again, trying to pierce through my calmness.

"It's been months." Uh-huh, like I care. You're my wife.

"I've been sleeping with him." Right... what time is it?

I looked for the clock. Weirdly enough, it's blurry, so I checked for my phone.

7:48 A.M.

Right, yeah, I have to catch the bus. I still have 12 minutes left.

I reached for my bag, took my suit, and my keys. I kissed my wife goodbye but...

"Justine!" She was there, sitting, unmoving. Crying.

Did I do something?

"Let's not pretend nothing is wrong." She looks at me. Tears filled her eyes.

"I'm sorry..."

I left.

I was able to get in the bus, continued my life as it is. Greeted my co-workers as soon as I entered the building and reported yesterday's work. I submitted the progress of the research to my team lead, and went to my cubicle.

On my way, I spotted the news. It seems that there's an accident near my area. Unfortunate. The crash also seem to have taken a few lives as well, including some children.. Goddamnit.

---

"Yo, Douglas. Better get your ass up. We're going home."

"Huh? Why?" I massage both of my eyes as I turn my glance towards my co-worker.

"What do you mean, why? It's 2 hours passed 5. Everyone's already out."

Oh, right. I have the clock out.

It's this later already? I just clocked in like... a few hours ago. It feels like time flies.

"Alright, I'd be right behind you. Gotta organize this files then I'll bounce."

"Sure. I'll be going."

"Alright." I organized the file by putting them in their respective folders. I even went so far as renaming some source code files so my team can easily identify which is which.

Afterwards, I packed my stuff and left the office. I walk towards the elevator and pressed to call one. Moments later, it opened.

As I was searching for the floor button. I seem to have contemplated. I never pressed the highest floor of the building, which is the rooftop, when it was only 2 floors away from the office. It was free to use for everyone, and few of my co-workers rest there during break.

I pressed it. See if the myth is true. That it is beautiful sight to see. Perhaps, I could also use it as a break.

Ping

The elevator closes, then my body seem to have gotten heavier as I went up. A few minutes later, the elevator opens, revealing a dark, chilly evening.

Ping

It's cold, the breeze is hard here. But... well. The sight IS amazing. There's trees, grass, benches even. Some sheds and a few cobblestone as paths. It's taken care of, especially well.

Woosh

The leaves from the tree got carried as far as here. And my eyes got watery from the air blowing through my face.

I walk towards the path, despite the lights' out, the lamp gave illumination to the area. As I reach for the edge, I took my arm and hold it to the stonewall.

God. Yeah, it IS amazing, indeed. I can see the traffic jams, the cityscape filled with lights. I can even see the contrasting scenery between here and the mountain up north.

Then, when the sight left my mind, I reach for the other edge of the stonewall. Climbed through it, then sits.

The breeze went harder than earlier and when I lie down, I saw the stars shining, as if wanting to be grabbed.

Tears filled my eyes for unknown reasons, but I smiled. Seeing that the I have practically failed in life.

My mom died without seeing my success, my father died with two of us having grudges against each other, my unsettled businesses with my siblings.

Goddamnit, truly. I am miserable.

I laugh, hysterically. A joke, it seems. My life has been filled with nothing until my wife came.

Yet, truly a joke indeed.

I stand from the stonewall.

Then I jump.

As I went down, I felt breeze getting colder. I didn't know, it seems I even still have time to complain.

Yet, the road soon came to view, then followed by nothing.
