Chapter 18 - Chapter 17: Devil Fruit and a Surprise

As the Roger Pirates were waiting for Roger to wake up, Koa then took a look at the treasure Devil Fruits that he had gotten from the prizes. Minus the Azure Dragon and the Paw-Paw Fruit, he still had four prize boxes left. He then opened the first box and compared the fruit inside to the Devil Fruit Encyclopedia. The first prize that he got was a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, and it was named the Hone-Hone no Mi.

"Hone-Hone no Mi," he read aloud. "This fruit allows its user to generate unlimited bones within their body, which can be used during fights. All the bones that are used regenerate immediately, and the process causes no pain at all. The user can also become a real skeleton by shedding all flesh, becoming nothing but bones. This way, opponents won't be able to hurt him, as he will have no organs, muscles, or nerves to damage."

Koa's eyes widened as he realized how similar this fruit's ability was to the technique used by Kimimaro in the anime Naruto.

Koa then opened another prize box, where he found another Devil Fruit. He checked it in the Encyclopedia and discovered the name of the fruit: Tanso Tanso no Mi, or Carbon-Carbon Fruit.

"The user's body becomes entirely made of carbon, turning them into a Carbon Human. The user has control over the configuration of the carbon molecules in their body, allowing them to transform into any carbon-based substance—including graphite, diamond, crude oil, most textiles, and more."

Koa read aloud as his mood shifted once again, becoming excited about the potential abilities this Devil Fruit could grant—especially in the right hands.

With two out of the four boxes opened, Koa was then interrupted by Rayleigh, who came into the room that had been designated for the four of them to sleep in. The other three were still outside on the deck, enjoying the sea.

"What are you doing?" Rayleigh asked, having sensed Koa's shifting emotions through his Observation Haki. His mood kept fluctuating like that of a moody teenager.

"I'm just opening the prizes I got from the island of God Valley. We stole them from the Celestial Dragons while they were busy fighting the pirates," Koa explained. He wasn't concerned about the Roger Pirates taking his Devil Fruits, knowing they weren't the type to steal from their own. They hadn't even taken the Devil Fruit Buggy had found.

"Hmmm. Stop that for now. Roger is awake, and you four should introduce yourselves before settling in," Rayleigh said, explaining the reason he had come. Koa then picked up the two unopened treasure chests, planning to present them to Roger as a gesture of appreciation for allowing them to board the ship and join the pirate crew. He also planned to bring out Captain John's ship and offer them half of the gold stored inside, keeping the remaining half along with the treasure he had taken from the Kingdom of God Valley.

When Koa came out, he saw Roger greeting the other three as they introduced themselves. It was clear that Kuma was shy—something deeply embedded in his personality—while Ginny and Ivankov introduced themselves to Roger gracefully and with joy. From their faces, you would never guess they had been slaves just hours ago.

As Rayleigh and Koa approached, Roger turned to look at them—and was clearly surprised by Koa's appearance.

"Whoa, you're a huge kid—and strong too," Roger said to Koa.

Calm yourself, boy, Koa thought, as his heart was beating uncontrollably fast. He was standing in front of his second favorite character in all of One Piece. It was the real Gol D. Roger—alive and in the flesh. He didn't have his signature mustache yet, but Koa kept telling himself to stay calm.

While Koa was internally freaking out, Roger couldn't help but smile. He could hear the sound of Koa's racing heart clearly. Rayleigh gave his usual awkward smile, while Gaban was grinning like an idiot.

"You alright?" Roger asked, snapping Koa out of his panic.

Koa quickly calmed himself and placed the two treasure chests he had been carrying down in front of Roger, which confused the Pirate King a little.

"Thank you for allowing us to join your pirate crew. As a token of our appreciation, please accept these two treasured prizes from God Valley, taken from the Celestial Dragons, and also half of the gold I've brought with me," Koa said as he floated down Captain John's ship and made it visible to the crew.

The sudden appearance of the ship startled the Roger Pirates. For a moment, they thought they were under attack by the remnants of the Rocks Pirates seeking revenge for Roger killing their captain. They were about to launch a counterattack when Roger shouted:

"Stop! Don't attack!"

Roger looked back at Koa, visibly impressed but still confused.

"Why would you give me your loot? You got it fair and square on the island—you weren't part of the Roger Pirates at the time. Now that you're with us, you'll have to share whatever treasure you collect with the crew. But let me make this clear: no looting from civilians, and no killing fellow crew members. Those are my rules. As long as the four of you follow them, you'll never be kicked out of the Roger Pirates. But you're also free to leave whenever you wish."

"Thank you, Captain," Koa replied, grateful for Roger's generosity. He didn't fully understand why Roger had refused the treasures—Koa had been willing to give them—but since Roger rejected the offer, Koa moved on to opening the final two treasure chests.

When he opened the first of the remaining chests, he found a Devil Fruit and a gun. He picked up the gun to examine it: a flintlock pistol made entirely of gold, decorated with embedded jewels. It was the kind of weapon the Celestial Dragons used to execute slaves.

Kuma, Ginny, and Ivankov immediately recognized it, and their expressions changed. Koa, sensing the shift in their mood and remembering Kuma's tragic past—how his father was killed by a Celestial Dragon while trying to console him after his mother's death—immediately tossed the gun into the sea.

He knew how traumatizing it must be for them to even look at it.

When Koa opened the final treasure chest, what he saw shocked him.

It wasn't a Devil Fruit.

It was a baby.

A red-haired baby.

Koa immediately recognized him—it was Shanks, the future Emperor of the Sea, and the strongest Haki user of the new generation.

"What the—?!"
