Miu’s large eyes blinked once in a fleeting motion that did little to betray his next actions. In a sudden blaze, the apple that Adrian had been playfully tossing skyward suddenly erupted in an unnerving display of black flames. They crackled ominously before the apple surrendered to the dark inferno with a quiet whoosh.
Adrian released a low, vexed sigh. “Ah… darn it.”
The apple’s charred remains plummeted, defeated, into Adrian’s waiting palm. He watched with a hint of annoyance as soot fell lightly over him, coating his body like snow.
The small child continued as if nothing had happened, his own fruit plump and red in his grasp. Bite by bite, the succulent fruit vanished into Miu’s eager mouth.
