Chapter 1 - File 1.1 - "Visitor"

A loud noise occured downstairs.

The one who's woken up by it and goes to investigate, a young boy, jumps up from his bed and goes to open the door of his room - the cabin wooden floor creaking with each step. The boy walks out of his room, past the bathroom and to his father's room, gently pushing the door open, revealing the room to be empty. He thought to himself that his father must have gone downstairs to see what the source of the sudden noise was, so the boy made his way downstairs.

He gets to the living room of the cabin, looking around the dark room only slightly illuminated by the moonlight.

His father is nowhere to be seen, the boy becomes frightened, and the idea of an intruder begins to rush into his head, but why? This area was a cabin resort deep in the woods and the only other people there were other campers who had no reason for breaking and entering. The boy hears speaking, noticing that the TV was left on, an old news report replaying overnight.

He takes a few steps towards the kitchen, realising he's stepped in some sort of liquid but unsure as to what it is as his eyes take some time to adjust to the darkness. Hearing another distant creak caused by footsteps, the boy notices that there's a lot more of the liquid than he originally thought, it covers the ground, spreading as if it had appeared recently.

Blood.

The boy takes a few steps back only the step in more blood, his shock of discovering what's on the floor distracting him from the approaching footsteps. "D-dad?" He begins to slowly start to panic as his father is still nowhere to be seen, the approaching figure whose footsteps he hadn't paid attention to now right behind him. The boy turns around, praying that it's his dad finally revealing himself.

His eyes lay on the figure who was behind him, and it only took a second or two for the boy to take in the sight of the entity, his heart immediately beginning to beat out of his chest at the sight.

A person whose mouth and lower nose are replaced with a hole filled with larva-like eyes, its eye sockets enlarged and filled with the strange eyeballs, completely bald and its skin covered in gross stretch marks caused by elongation of its limbs.

The boy tried to scream, but only a gasp came out as he rushed away from the entity, who reached out trying to grab him. His eyes wide in horror and his legs shaking from fear, in his rush trips over one of the chairs in the cabin and falls on the floor, giving the entity enough time to reach out and grab him, but before it could, a sharp metal object impaled it from behind, its disfigured body dropping to the floor.

The boy looks up, trembling, to see not another monster, but a man. As the man who saved him walks around the slumped over corpse, the outside light helps the boy view the man's features, noticing light military gear being worn by the man, it starts to make sense to him.

The military must've been alerted to the presence of these monsters and came to save any survivors, but why was there only one man here? The boy looks upon the soldier and sees a young man with slick-back brown hair and a scar covering his face from the side of his right eye to his lips, brandishing a modern-looking sword and a gun on his hip.

"Are you injured?"

The soldier looms over the boy, but he is still too shocked to speak a word, instead slowly standing up. The soldier walks past him to the door of the cabin.

"Come."

As they both get outside, the soldier talks to him.

"Run straight in that direction, just follow the path to the road."

He points towards a path leading out of the forest.

"Other men in uniform are waiting there, I'll let them know you're coming.."

The boy hesitantly nods and runs off.

The soldier begins to walk towards the other cabins in the campsite and talks into his transmitter.

"This is Sawyer, I found a survivor, a young boy. I've sent him to you; he should be arriving soon."

The voice from the other side of the transmitter speaks. A woman's voice replies to Sawyer's message.

"Alright, any updates on the anomaly?"

"Some sort of weird frog-eggs controlling people, it's not an infection as previously thought, just small pieces of something using the victims as a host."

"Can they be saved by taking the stuff out?" He looks back into the cabin at the corpse lying on the wooden floor.

"I doubt it - these people might already be dead and just being used as puppets." The voice transmits its reply to him.

"I understand, find the source as fast as you can." The radio transmission ends, leaving Sawyer in silence.

Sawyer makes his way to the other cabins to check for any other survivors, but before getting far, another infected person with pale skin and frogspawn-like eyes oozing out if they're eyes and move lunges at him, not brainless like a zombie but not careful like a human, as if controlled remotely but something else, dashes to him from out of the darkness trying to catch him off guard.

Sawyer notices the footsteps behind him and dodges the incoming attacker, his sword slicing the monster's head off in one clean attack. He looks down at the decapitated head, hesitating to see the original human face as the eyeball-like eggs oozed out of his eye sockets and lipless mouth, but continues through the cabin-site, not paying the exchange too much thought.

The lone soldier continued onward through the forest in the darkness, his path slightly brightened by the moonlight filtering through the trees. He'd check the next nearest cabin, but it would become apparent that they were all devoid of habitants, and any clues to where the anomaly originated would be a stroke of luck.

Sawyer immediately turns his head towards a group of entities running through the bushes making loud rustling which alerts him to ready his weapon. A group of several people with faces mutilated by the anomaly rush mindlessly at Sawyer, having noticed him, now gathered to tear him apart.

Sawyer takes a few steps forward to the closest approaching enemy, cutting its head clean off sending it flying, its corpse collapsing towards him as the blood trickles down like a fountain causing Sawyer to glide backwards.

He steps back again, ensuring he doesn't get surrounded by the horde.

As he beheads another infected person, more come at him from his side causing him to quickly slash at them before they get to him. However, the controlled people continue their pursuit even after a lethal injury, seemingly only killed after severing their head.

Deciding on a tactical retreat, Sawyer dashes behind a nearby cabin, leaping on top of a bin to support his climb up onto the rooftop. With his foot planted firmly on the rooftop, he glares through the darkness at his pursuers, now that they've lost him they wander around like drones.

"This is Sawyer, any updates on-"
