Chapter 36 – Ashborn Trial

The Cindervore struck with the fury of a dying god.

It roared as it emerged in full—its body a twisted amalgamation of charred bone and flame-forged armor, its maw wide with flickering embers and jagged teeth that radiated searing heat. Every step it took scorched the ground, reducing stone to molten slag. Lava bled from its joints like veins torn open, hissing as it hit the cooled rock beneath.

Kael moved first. Fire surged in his chest, responding to the threat with primal instinct. Emberwake activated without command—every swing of his blade set the air aflame, trails of crimson heat following each strike. But the Cindervore didn't slow. It absorbed the fire, fed on it, and retaliated with molten claws aimed to crush.

Lys rolled to the side, loosing a hail of light-forged daggers. They struck, then fizzled, as if sucked into the creature's flames. "We need a better plan!" she shouted.

"I know!" Kael ducked beneath a swing that shattered the cliff wall beside him. Rock exploded outward. He could feel the system analyzing the creature—projecting trajectories, weaknesses, escape routes—but none of them promised survival without cost.

Sareth appeared from the shadows behind the beast, twin swords glowing with white runes. He leapt high and brought them down in an X-shaped slash across the Cindervore's back. It shrieked, spinning with unnatural speed, catching Sareth midair with a blast of heat that launched him into the rocks.

"Sareth!" Lys ran to him, checking his pulse. He was alive, barely.

Kael's vision tunneled. The vow within him stirred, the legacy demanding action.

The transformation was instant.

Kael's body surged with heat—not the painful burn of uncontrolled fire, but a living blaze that answered to him. His hair lit like a burning crown. His skin glowed beneath layers of red light. Fire no longer followed his will—it was his will.

He moved in a blur. One moment in front of the Cindervore, the next above it. He brought his sword down with a shout, cleaving through the monster's shoulder in a shower of molten sparks. The creature staggered, confused for the first time.

It tried to retaliate, but Kael was gone—blinking to the side in a flash of flame, striking again. And again. Each hit seared deep, carving into its unnatural armor.

Lys threw a sphere of condensed light into the creature's maw. It exploded on impact. For once, the Cindervore reeled.

"Now, Kael!"

Kael leapt.

He thrust his hand forward, gathering every ember, every trace of fire left in the air. A burning sigil formed in his palm—Vireya's mark. The same one from the sanctum.

"Burn," he whispered.

And the world ignited.

---

The explosion shook the mountains. Heat rippled through the sky like a second sun had been born in the ravine. When the light faded, the Cindervore was gone—reduced to ash and flickering embers.

Kael dropped to one knee, breath ragged, the Flameform fading. Smoke curled from his armor, and the mark on his hand burned faintly red.

They didn't speak for several minutes.

Only the hiss of cooling stone and the crackle of dying flames broke the silence.

Lys finally walked over. "That form… it wasn't just power. It felt like something was speaking through you."

Kael looked up, chest still heaving. "Vireya. Or maybe the part of her bound to the legacy."

Sareth stirred beside the rock, groaning. Lys ran to help him, but Kael stood, staring at the ashes.

"We're being watched," he said. "These attacks, these echoes… it's all a test. Someone—something—is trying to shape me into a weapon."

"You think it's Icarus?" Lys asked.

Kael didn't respond. Not yet. The name hung unspoken in his mind like smoke behind glass.

He looked at his hand—the sigil still glowing faintly. Not just power. Memory. Purpose.

They weren't done.
