Susan caught a flicker of something dangerous in his eyes, and her heart suddenly skipped a beat.
He wasn't being polite, nor was he joking.
In that moment, she began to understand why Andrew was so afraid of Gavin. Because this man was truly dangerous.
He appeared gentle and harmless in front of her, making Susan almost forget that he was the head of a powerful family, a real leader and ruler. But the feud between her and Andrew was their own. She didn't want to drag unrelated people into it.
"No, thank you, Mr. Feynman, for your kindness," Susan said calmly.
Gavin smiled faintly and said no more.
That day, Susan had a stunt scene where she had to jump off a high platform with wires.
Standing below watching her, Susan noticed that Gavin looked nervous. He turned to Director Yvonne and said something; the director asked a question and then nodded.
After that, Director Yvonne told the wire crew, "Lower her down a bit slower, and double-check the safety equipment."
Surrounded by the crew again, Susan lowered her gaze in the chaos, and her eyes met Gavin's as he looked up at her from below.
Gavin's face, previously tense, softened for a moment as he gave a slight, silent smile, almost as if to say, "Don't be afraid."
Susan forced herself to look away coolly.
This scene was about the protagonist attempting suicide.
Susan was a little afraid of heights, but this wasn't her first time falling with wires, her belief in acting overcame her fear.
She stood on the high platform, took a deep breath, and after delivering her lines, leapt down. When she landed, her legs went weak, almost causing her to kneel.
At that moment, a strong arm wrapped around her, holding her tightly. "Are you okay?"
Susan turned her head and saw Gavin frowning, his face tense as he examined her expression. He looked even more nervous than she felt, completely unlike his usual gentle and composed self.
Susan shook her head, calmly freeing herself from his embrace and smiled, "I'm fine, thank you."
Her assistant helped her sit down nearby. After a while, Gavin sat down as well and turned to ask, "Are you afraid of heights?"
Susan answered, "A little. Why?"
Gavin smiled and asked, "Then weren't you scared standing up there?"
Susan really thought about it seriously. Then she replied, "Actually, I was scared the first time, and because I hesitated, I lost my first important role."
"Since then, I never dared hesitate again. Whenever I get such a chance, I'll hold on tight, even if it means facing fire and blood."
Gavin chuckled softly, a faint smile surfacing in his usually unfathomable eyes. But the next moment, Susan's smile faded.
Gavin said, "But my mom told me you weren't afraid of heights before, you even appeared on a rock climbing reality show."
Susan's heart suddenly tightened. It wasn't the original person who was afraid of heights, it was her.
Before she could think more about how Gavin knew such details, panic washed over her patience. "That was just for show. Actually, I am a bit afraid of heights." Her obvious hesitation made her think Gavin wouldn't believe her.
But he didn't press further. Instead, the smile in his eyes shifted into something chillingly playful. "You're not quite the same as before."
Susan racked her brain, confirming from the original memories that she'd never met Gavin before, then asked with some relief, "Have we met?"
Gavin rested his head on his hand, tilting it to look at her slowly. "I've seen your interviews and reality shows."
"And you said you didn't like eating foie gras, but the first time we met, I gave you some, and you ate it."
Goosebumps broke out all over Susan's skin. She hadn't expected him to notice such small details. Then, the next sentence rang in her ears, making her scalp tingle even more.
"It's like you've become a completely different person."
