Airi stood near the fountain in a pastel pink blouse and a white pleated skirt, nervously fiddling with the ribbon in her hair.
She looked… adorable.
Kawaii, kawaii, thought the narrator.
And here comes our dumb main character.
Yuuta came running toward her, out of breath.
"Huff... huff... Sorry I'm late!"
Airi turned to him with a sweet smile.
"Yuuta! You finally came."
"Haa... yeah, sorry... I—"
"Don't worry. I just got here."
Yuuta blinked.
Wait, isn't that line supposed to be said by a boy?
"Airi..." Yuuta said, catching his breath.
"Hm?"
"If you're really sorry for coming late," she said, leaning in playfully, "then I'll give you a punishment."
"Punishment?"
Yuuta froze. Just how cute could she be today?
Even the narrator blushed.
Same, Yuuta. Same.
"Alright," Yuuta replied, nervous. "I'll take the punishment."
Airi closed her eyes and leaned forward slightly.
"Then… kiss me, Yuuta."
"H-Huh?!"
His face turned beet red.
With shaky hands, Yuuta leaned in... and kissed her hand.
Airi opened one eye.
"Eh? What's this? I meant a kiss on the lips!"
Yuuta chuckled awkwardly, still blushing.
"There are so many people... it's embarrassing."
Airi pouted, then smirked.
"Okay then. If you won't do it—I will."
She leaned in again.
"W-Wait!" Yuuta dodged to the side.
She tried again. He dodged again.
"Yuuta!" she huffed. "Stop running!"
"I—I can't just kiss you like that out here!"
Airi crossed her arms, puffing her cheeks.
"I hate you! I hate you!"
"Okay, okay!" Yuuta surrendered. "One kiss—but make it quick!"
Airi's face lit up.
They shared a brief kiss. Yuuta turned away immediately, covering his face.
"That's enough!"
"But I want more," Airi said in a cute, childish voice.
"Nope! Let's go."
They began walking side by side.
"So… where to?" Airi asked, arms crossed.
"I don't know. You're the one acting like a child."
"I am not a child!"
"Child?"
"Yes! Yuuta, you—"
"No, I mean seriously—there's a child crying."
They both turned. Sure enough, a little girl stood nearby, wiping tears from her face.
"Should we continue our date or help her?" Airi asked.
Yuuta smiled. "Let's help her."
Airi nodded. "Right!"
They approached the girl.
"Hey there, what's your name?" Airi asked gently.
"K-Kikyo…" the girl sniffled.
"Are you lost?" Yuuta asked.
"I got separated from Mommy…"
"Don't worry," Airi said. "We'll help you."
"Yeah," Yuuta added. "Let's go to the police. If your mom is looking for you, she probably went there."
"And if she didn't, we'll report it ourselves," Airi said.
"Okay!" Kikyo smiled, still holding back tears.
---
At the police station, they filed a report.
"If her mom shows up, we'll call," the officer assured them.
Airi bent down.
"Kikyo, where did you last see your mother?"
"Outside the shopping mall…"
They headed there, asking people along the way.
"No one's seen her…" Airi frowned.
"Maybe she didn't even notice Kikyo's missing," Yuuta muttered.
"She's busy with work," Kikyo said quietly, sipping juice. "She gave me time today... because it's my birthday."
Both Yuuta and Airi froze.
"Huh?! Happy birthday, Kikyo!"
"Thanks!"
Kikyo tossed her juice bottle in the bin and walked back to Yuuta.
"When I do something good, Mommy pats my head."
Yuuta chuckled and gently patted her head.
"Good job."
Airi narrowed her eyes.
She marched off, bought a juice bottle, drank it, tossed it, and came back.
"I did something good too."
"Huh?" Yuuta blinked.
"You patted her head. I want one too."
"You're not a kid, Airi…"
Airi pouted. Her eyes sparkled with fake tears.
"But I want one!"
Sigh. Yuuta gave in.
He patted her head.
Airi grinned.
Still a kid… but a cute one, Yuuta thought.
Suddenly—
"Kikyo!"
A voice rang from behind.
Kikyo's mom came rushing over and hugged her.
"I'm so sorry! I was stuck in meetings... Thank you both!"
"No worries," Yuuta replied.
"Yeah. She's a sweet girl," Airi added.
"Bye-bye, Big Sis! Big Bro!" Kikyo waved as she left.
---
Yuuta sat down with a sigh and took a sip of juice.
"Finally…"
"Hey, Yuuta…" Airi said softly.
"Hm?"
"I want a kid too."
Spit.
Yuuta choked, spilling juice everywhere.
"W-What are you saying?!"
"I mean… someone like Kikyo. She's adorable. Having a kid like that someday would be really nice."
Yuuta stared at her for a moment, then smiled.
"Good for you. In the future."
...
Then everything went black.
A cold whisper echoed in Yuuta's ear.
> "There is no future for her."
---
Yuuta woke up in bed, gasping.
"Haa… haa…"
Just another weird dream?
