Chapter 59 - Part 59: The Setup

The first whispers started during second period.

"Did you see the video?""Is it real?""I feel bad for her… but also, how could she do that?"

Michelle didn't know what they were talking about.

Until Lila ran into her classroom, breathless, holding her phone.

"Don't freak out," she said. "But you need to see this."

And she showed Michelle the video.

The Edited Lie

The screen played a short, grainy clip—Michelle sitting in the courtyard with Jordan, Steve's best friend. They were laughing. Jordan leaned toward her, and Michelle's hand briefly touched his arm.

It looked… intimate.

But what the video didn't show was Lila sitting beside them, just out of frame. Or that the conversation was about Steve's surprise birthday plan.

It was harmless.

But someone — and Michelle knew exactly who — had cut the footage to look like something more.

The caption read:

So much for being loyal…

And it was going viral around campus.

Steve's Reaction

Steve found her just after third period, his face pale.

"Michelle…"

"I swear it's fake," she said immediately. "Ask Lila. She was right there. You know I'd never—"

"I believe you," he said, cutting her off, voice tight. "But this is bad."

Michelle blinked. "Wait… you actually believe me?"

He took her hand. "Of course I do. I know who you are. And I know who she is."

Michelle swallowed hard, overcome by both relief and rising rage.

"She's really trying to destroy me."

"Then we don't let her win."

The Confrontation

That afternoon, Michelle, Lila, and Steve stood in front of the principal's office. They'd gathered the original footage — the unedited version, full of laughter, harmless teasing, and nothing romantic.

The principal, a stern woman named Dr. Vasquez, watched everything twice.

When the video ended, she looked up slowly. "And you're sure it was this… Emily who edited and distributed this?"

"Yes," Lila said. "She sent it to a private group chat I was in before I left it. She called it her 'little truth grenade.'"

Dr. Vasquez pursed her lips. "That's not just cyberbullying. That's defamation."

Emily's Fall

Emily was called into the office the next morning.

She didn't return for the rest of the day.

By afternoon, the word had spread: Emily had been suspended. Again. Only this time, it might be permanent.

Michelle sat under a tree in the courtyard, Steve's hoodie wrapped around her shoulders, her head resting against his side.

"You okay?" he asked gently.

"I think so," she whispered.

He kissed her temple. "You were amazing."

She looked up at him, eyes soft. "So were you. Thank you for believing me."

He smiled. "I always will."

A New Beginning

The next Monday, Michelle walked through the school halls with her chin high. People didn't look at her with doubt anymore.

They nodded.

They smiled.

Some even apologized.

She wasn't just "Steve's girlfriend."

She was Michelle.

Strong. Brave. Resilient.

And most importantly—finally free.
