Chapter 14 - Vendetta Circuit Chapter 14: "Inferno Protocol"

Parts 1 to 6 – Full Chapter

Part 1: The Crucible Awaits

The roar of the arena drowned out everything else.

Zayne Voss stood motionless at the edge of the combat platform — a jagged hexagonal grid suspended by steel arms over a raging molten core. Red light flickered from below like the breath of a sleeping titan, casting eerie glows on his sweat-lined face. He could feel the heat through his boots. The scent of scorched metal and burnt ozone filled the air.

This wasn't a battleground. It was a crucible.

He adjusted the strap on his gauntlet and stared across the grid, eyes narrowing. On the far side, emerging from shadows, came his opponent.

Clad in jet-black armor, the figure moved with mechanical precision. Its mask was smooth, featureless, reflecting only the red fire below. A single marking blinked on its chest — 077.

No name. No emotion. Just a number.

Zayne's HUD lit up.

[TARGET LOCKED: COMBAT CLASS - TIER X][CAUTION: ENEMY TYPE UNCLASSIFIED][DEATH RATE IN SIMILAR MATCHUPS: 89.7%]

He muttered under his breath, "Black Halo's throwing monsters at me now."

The announcer's voice crackled through overhead speakers, but Zayne barely heard it. His focus was locked. His heartbeat was a war drum.

Then the floor beneath them shifted.

The arena came alive — panels rotating, sections rising and falling. From below, jets of searing flame shot upward in irregular bursts. Energy spikes flickered between tiles, slicing the air with deadly arcs of plasma.

Zayne rolled his shoulders.

The fight hadn't started yet, but he already felt the weight of survival crashing down on him.

A loud GONG rang out across the chamber.

The battle had begun.

And 077 moved.

Part 2: The Phantom Blades Clash

Zayne barely dodged the first strike. The air burned as a knuckle-blade whistled past his face, missing by inches. The second blow hit home — a crushing elbow to his shoulder that sent him skidding across the platform.

077 followed like a shadow, each step deliberate, exact, fatal.

Zayne activated Phantom Loop, a self-developed maneuver using misdirection and momentum redirection. He let his body move like a ripple in water, always a step behind the blow, never caught.

Still, 077 was fast.

Too fast.

Zayne slipped into a low roll, grabbing a loose steel rod from the shifting tiles. He spun and struck upward, smashing it across 077's side.

The rod bent.

077 didn't move.

Instead, it punched the rod mid-swing, snapping it in half with raw force, and sent a knee into Zayne's gut, folding him over. The enemy grabbed his collar and threw him into a wall of heated plasma.

Alarms screamed inside his neural HUD.

[WARNING: NEURAL OVERLOAD IMMINENT][CORE TEMPERATURE RISING]

He slammed a fist into the wall behind him, knocking loose a vent pipe. Cool steam hissed over him. He gasped and stood.

That's when the voice arrived — soft, venomous, unmistakable.

"You're predictable, Zayne."

Dr. Kael Riven.

"Every move. Every glitch. You're not fighting for revenge. You're running my simulation."

Zayne gritted his teeth. "You always were a coward behind a screen."

"Yet you dance to my music."

Rage surged.

Zayne's eyes lit with a shimmer of violet — the color of Echo Vein, a forbidden protocol.

He activated it.

Part 3: Echo Vein Awakens

The floor beneath his feet cracked as Echo Vein surged through his implants. For a moment, everything slowed. He could see the heat trails left by 077's movements, the residual afterimages of punches, and the arcs of electricity in the air.

He mimicked the patterns. Not just reflexes — intention.

077 lunged again, but Zayne twisted into a mirrored strike — same angle, opposite vector. Their fists collided, sending a shockwave across the arena. The platform beneath them fractured.

077 stumbled.

Zayne seized the moment — ducked low, unleashed three brutal strikes to the torso, and ended with a high spinning heel-kick that cracked the opponent's helmet.

077 staggered back.

Zayne paused, shocked.

He saw blood.

077 was not a machine.

He was human.

The cracked mask fell.

Zayne's heart stopped.

"Milo…?"

His best friend.

The one he buried five years ago.

Part 4: Broken Brotherhood

Milo Carver's face was pale, gaunt, but unmistakable. His left eye was cybernetic. Scars webbed across his jaw. His lips trembled.

"Zayne…" he rasped.

Zayne stepped back. "They said you died. I saw the fire."

"You saw what they wanted you to see," Milo said. "I was taken. Rebuilt. Conditioned."

"Why are you fighting me?"

Milo's voice cracked. "Because they put a kill command in my head. If I don't fight you… I die."

Zayne's fists tightened. "You think I care about that protocol? We can beat it. Together."

Milo's hands trembled. "No. You don't understand. They rewrote me. I want to fight. They made me want it."

Then he charged.

And this time — he cried as he struck.

Zayne blocked every blow, but his arms burned. Milo wasn't holding back. He was going for kill shots, clean and efficient. Each one laced with decades of training. Their brotherhood shattered with every impact.

Zayne refused to hit back.

Until the final blow — a plasma dagger aimed straight at his throat.

Zayne caught it — and shattered the blade.

"ENOUGH!"

He drove a knee into Milo's stomach, then slammed him down with a spine-cracking suplex.

Part 5: Inferno Protocol

The floor collapsed beneath them.

They fell into the reactor chamber — a swirling maelstrom of heat, gears, and unfiltered core radiation.

Zayne landed hard, coughing blood, his implants glitching.

Milo rose slowly. His hands shook, but his body was preparing another assault.

Zayne stared at him.

No more running. No more holding back.

He whispered: "Override… Inferno Protocol."

His HUD blinked red.

[WARNING: CORE LIMIT EXCEEDED][UNLOCKING ARCHIVED DATA: JERICHO-X STRIKE PATTERN][PROTOCOL UNCHAINED]

A surge of energy exploded from Zayne's back, ripping away his jacket. Arc-light circled his limbs, forming gauntlets, boots, and a spine-mounted capacitor. His irises turned molten gold.

Milo lunged.

Zayne met him mid-air.

The impact cracked the reactor walls. Pillars collapsed. Heat exploded in shockwaves.

They fought like gods — fists colliding in sonic bursts, kicks sending them flying across the chamber. Milo screamed, "KILL ME! END THIS!"

Zayne refused.

Instead, he triggered a neural loop — a risky interface hack.

He dove into Milo's mind.

Part 6: Redemption Circuit

Inside Milo's neural field, everything was fire and pain. Screams echoed in loops. Torture. Training. Reprogramming.

Zayne pushed deeper.

He found the kill switch — buried in a code block labeled "Project Revenant."

He reached for it — but a voice stopped him.

"Do that… and you'll die too."

It was Dr. Riven.

Zayne clenched his mental fist and ripped the block free.

A shock tore through him.

In the real world, both fighters collapsed.

Silence.

Then… Milo stirred.

His eyes — clear again.

Zayne gasped, "You back?"

Milo nodded. "You idiot. You could've died."

"I've already died once," Zayne said, smiling weakly.

Above them, alarms blared.

The reactor was destabilizing.

And the crowd above?

They cheered louder than ever.

Epilogue: Fire Forged

Smoke curled from the broken reactor walls. Sparks crackled. Alarms screamed across the arena's upper decks. The entire dome flickered under system stress. Spectators, officials, and engineers had already begun evacuating.

In the center of the ruined chamber, Zayne Voss stirred.

His breath was ragged. His armor cracked and smoking. But he was alive.

Beside him lay Milo, unconscious — still breathing.

The kill switch was gone. Zayne had freed him. But at a cost.

Zayne's core was melting down. His HUD was silent. No alerts. No systems. Just fading static.

He reached into his pocket, pulling out a silver ring — the one Milo gave him before the "accident" five years ago. He placed it gently on Milo's chest.

"Welcome back, brother."

Above, a reinforced door creaked open.

Sierra emerged — her rifle raised, eyes wide with disbelief. "You did it…"

Zayne turned toward her, coughing blood. "No. We survived it."

She rushed to them, pulling out medical nodes and patches. "We need to move. Black Halo's coming."

Zayne tried to stand — and collapsed.

Behind Sierra, another voice echoed down the tunnel.

Slow. Cold.

Dr. Kael Riven.

Clapping.

"Well done, Zayne. You've unlocked the Inferno Protocol. Just like I hoped."

Zayne's blood turned to ice.

Riven stepped forward, flanked by a dozen augmented enforcers.

"This isn't the end. It's the beginning. Project Jericho wasn't just about power…"

He smiled.

"It was about evolution."

Zayne rose, fury burning in his shattered frame.

"This circuit isn't over, Riven."

Riven nodded slowly. "I know. That's what makes it beautiful."
