Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 – Storm Keys

[Scene: Practice Room B-3, late afternoon]

Rain lashes against the windows like a soundtrack to the chaos inside.

Jang Ah slams her music notebook on the piano, her frustration palpable.

Across from her, Hyojin lounges with one ankle resting on his knee, sipping a canned coffee like he's filming a commercial.

Jang Ah: "Do you have to be that calm? We've wasted 20 minutes already."

Hyojin (deadpan): "I'd argue watching you have a breakdown was educational."

She glares. He smirks.

Jang Ah: "I swear, if I had a violin bow, you'd be missing an eye right now."

Hyojin: "And miss your pitchy playing? Tragic."

A pause. The lights flicker.

Thunder growls in the distance.

[Cut to: Piano keys under dim light]

Jang Ah sits down. Her fingers touch the keys, hesitant. Then… she plays.

Not their competition piece. Something else.

Soft. Dreamlike. Familiar.

Hyojin freezes.

Voice-over (Hyojin's thoughts):

No way. Not that melody again… It can't be her.

She keeps playing. Unaware.

Outside, thunder roars.

The lights go out.

[Cut to black screen. Sounds of fumbling and yelling.]

Jang Ah: "You elbowed me!"

Hyojin: "You bumped into me!"

Jang Ah: "Are you blind or just spatially challenged?"

A flashlight flicks on. Their faces appear in its glow—too close.

Beat of silence. They stare. Then quickly look away.

Hyojin (quietly): "Why do you keep playing that melody?"

Jang Ah: "Huh?"

Hyojin: "That tune. You play it when you're not thinking."

She hesitates.

Jang Ah: "I… don't know. I think I made it up years ago. It's dumb. I called it Rain Song. Cheesy, right?"

He doesn't answer.

Because he knows.

Voice-over (Hyojin):

The hallway. The rain. The girl humming behind the glass. I never saw her face. But now I'm hearing her again.

He moves beside her on the bench, slowly. No jokes this time. No smirks.

He plays with her—quiet harmonies that wrap around her melody like a conversation without words.

[Cut to: Montage]

— The two of them playing in sync

— The rain outside slowing down

— Jang Ah stealing a glance at him

— Hyojin turning away just in time

— Her foot lightly bumping his

— Neither of them pulling away

The lights return. Bright. Cold.

They both stop playing, blinking in the light.

Jang Ah: "…Well. That was weird."

Hyojin (softly): "Yeah."

She grabs her bag.

Jang Ah: "Same time tomorrow?"

Hyojin: "Unless you change your mind."

Jang Ah (without looking at him):

"I won't. Unless you start talking about your feelings. Then I'm out."

He laughs, not expecting that.

She leaves.

He watches the door for a beat. Then looks back at the keys.

Voice-over (Hyojin):

Same melody. Same girl. And still… she doesn't remember.

But maybe it's better this way.

Or maybe it's already too late.

Jang Ah finds an old photo tucked inside a dusty drawer of the practice room.

A blurry image. A piano.

A boy with headphones.

A name scribbled on the back—hers.

Why is it there?

Why is she in a photo she doesn't remember?

And why does Hyojin look like he's seen a ghost?

The past isn't behind them anymore.

It's sitting at the piano, waiting to be heard.
