Chapter 30 - The Night Before Departure

The sun had long set behind the conurbation walls, painting the sky in deep purples and molten reds. A quiet celebration stirred in the modest home that Jimmy shared with Sister Lisa and the other orphans. Paper lanterns danced in the evening breeze, casting warm flickers across the courtyard. There was no grand parade or banquet—but everyone was smiling. And in this house, that meant the world.

Jimmy had been selected for one of the top three Whisp academies in the province, and although he didn't speak, his eyes shimmered with quiet pride. He hadn't said much all evening—he rarely did—but the way he nodded and clutched his invitation scroll showed what it meant to him.

Later that night, in the solitude of his room, Jimmy sat cross-legged on the floor, tossing a rolled cloth ball across the room. Luna pounced on it, her watery-electric form flickering with playful glows as she leapt and skidded. Her tail buzzed slightly when she was excited.

Lisa leaned against the doorframe, arms folded, watching them.

"You could tell them," she said gently, referring to Luna's real nature.

Jimmy paused, then shook his head. "No," he signed. "She doesn't like it. She asked me not to."

Lisa smiled faintly and nodded in understanding. "Alright, little fox. We've got everything ready for tomorrow... but you said you needed to buy something?"

Jimmy stood and nodded. "Just a few things."

Minutes later, the two walked through the quiet evening streets, Luna perched on Jimmy's head like a curious, fuzzy crown. Her tail dangled playfully down his back, sparking now and then.

Their first stop was a small clothing shop near the town's plaza. Jimmy browsed quickly, his eyes landing on an oddly formal ensemble—a black coat, matching top hat, fitted suit, and a polished walking stick. He slipped into the outfit and twirled dramatically in front of the mirror.

He looked like a miniature magician about to announce a circus.

Lisa burst out laughing, and Jimmy joined her, holding his sides as Luna yawned and quietly faded into her taming space—falling asleep from too much excitement.

They stopped next at the whisp medical shop. Jimmy picked up ten Shui-Shi fruits, four Volt Berries —Water, Thunder all for his upcoming academy life. He used the money Lisa had quietly slipped into his pocket earlier.

That night, after dinner, Jimmy carefully packed his belongings. He checked every corner of his worn travel bag twice, making sure Luna's blanket, ball and all her playing things were folded neatly beside her energy fruit box. Luna was watching with full concentration. After waving goodbye to the other orphans, he returned to his room, pulled Luna gently from her taming space, and fed her.

"Four Shui-Shi… six Volt Berries… one of each potion…" he muttered softly, his fingers brushing her silky fur as she blinked lazily, her eyes glowing softly.

They played for another three hours—simple games with no rules, just laughter, tail pounces, and the occasional tackle. When the clock struck midnight, Jimmy yawned.

"I have to go early," he whispered. "So… sleep now."

Luna didn't reply, but nestled against his chest and fell asleep to the sound of his heartbeat.

Jimmy opened the Codex, the mystical artifact that recorded and evolved information about bonded Whisps.

Just as he closed the Codex, a gentle hum pulsed from Luna's orb. She stirred inside, her form flickering with light—eyes wide for a second, as if she had felt something shift inside her.

"You alright?" Jimmy asked, touching the Luna gently.

She blinked, almost trying to say something, then gave a tired flick of her tail—and went back to sleep.

Then went to sleep.

The Morning Journey

By 5:30 a.m., Jimmy had already dressed in his neat academy uniform and quietly closed the front gate. Lisa was still asleep. His satchel rested firmly on his back. He kept Luna inside her taming space—"Sleep a bit more," he whispered before closing the summoning orb.

The two-hour walk to the academy was peaceful. Dew clung to the grass, and birds chirped lazily from treetops. As he walked,

Tomorrow had already begun.
