Chapter 38 - Chapter 38: Memories of the Past

"Ice Emperor Scorpion, you... you're something else! Still following me after you're dead."

"Go on! Who's dead and following you? If you really died, I'd be the first to run."

"Then what's going on right now?" Gu You glanced around—an endless sea of flames.

"I'm not sure either, but that woman isn't dead! The only thing I can confirm is that your Destruction Beam must've dispersed the energy from the missile right before it hit Yue Zi. That kind of release could only explode outward, with the interior collapsing. Its effect wasn't even as strong as a Grade 4 soul-guided missile. You were holding her, and didn't suffer a single injury." The Ice Emperor Scorpion explained.

'It can work like that?' Gu You's heart tensed. He felt like he'd discovered a whole new continent.

"Then where did she go?" Gu You asked seriously. If Yue Zi wasn't dead, why didn't she kill him while he was unconscious?

"No idea. I just regained the ability to see through your eyes and woke you using ice element stimulation."

"I have to admit, you're actually kind of smart, despite your thick-headedness. I can't just keep calling you Ice Emperor Scorpion, can I? Let's give you a more fitting name—how about… Iron Dummy?"

?

Before Iron Dummy could object, Gu You cut off the spiritual link. "Resistance is futile." He smiled calmly.

"You're awake?" Yue Zi sat on a long black spike formed of condensed dark matter. One hand rested on her leg, the other supported her on the spike as she gazed up at the flaming sky.

Gu You immediately grew wary.

"Heh! Am I really that scary? Let me tell you a story—want to hear it?" Yue Zi looked over at Gu You.

"Go ahead." Gu You half-squatted. It was clear Yue Zi had held back in every fight they'd had. After all, a Limit Douluo's strength could obliterate a city with a flick of the finger. She didn't seem intent on killing him. As for why—that might lie in the story she was about to tell.

"I was born into a wealthy family. I had two sisters, making three of us in total. At six years old, we awakened our martial souls. Both my sisters had great talent—they inherited the rare Moon Silken martial soul, a family legacy. But me... I was a joke. My martial soul was a vine. Soul power rank: three." As she spoke, Yue Zi clenched her fist, terrifying soul power surging around her.

"That day!! The entire clan found out I was a bastard! You'll never understand that feeling—disbelief, despair. I was treated with cold contempt. Even an unknown steward could scold me, the so-called 'young lady.' Ha! Tell me—what was I supposed to do?" Yue Zi looked directly at Gu You.

Gu You trembled. He didn't know how to answer.

"You wouldn't understand anyway. You had everything—outstanding martial soul. I bet your life was spectacular from the moment you awakened..." Yue Zi lowered her head. Gu You didn't argue. He had no right to mock someone else while listening to such a story.

"I trained hard. Eventually, I reached rank ten and could fuse my first soul ring. I went to my father to ask for one. Do you know what he said? He said I wasn't as talented as my sisters, that I should learn housekeeping and knowledge—maybe go into politics. I knew he meant well, but I just had one question: if that's how it was going to be, why did he father me with a woman he barely knew? If I was born unwanted, why raise me at all? Was it just guilt? I wanted to be a Soul Master, to gain power and learn the truth about myself. Whether they supported me or not..."

"I stole money from my father and went to the Spirit Transmission Tower to draw a random spirit. But the heavens played a cruel joke—I got a defective one! A defective vine-type spirit!! I was starving, weak, but I still chose to absorb it. I don't know how much courage I had at the time. I only knew my resentment would never fade! My martial soul mutated into the Bloodthirsty Heavenly Vine. Then, I started killing stray cats and dogs on the streets. In just two years, I reached rank twenty. I was still kind back then—didn't think about killing people. But then one day, everything changed..."

"It was a group of bad men. They tried to abduct me—drag me into the dark side of the world. Luckily, they were just ordinary people. I killed them. My soul power rose to rank twenty-three. That first taste of killing—I was hooked. I had no money, so I decided to go home and prove my strength, show them I wasn't trash. But thinking back, I was so naive." Yue Zi looked calmly at her own hands.

"My family... they said I was an evil Soul Master! They wanted to take me to the Federal Court to suffer eternal punishment. They called me a little bitch. Even my father stayed silent. I longed for his approval—but there was none!! While they were restraining me, I found an opportunity. I extended my vine through the door gap—small, silent. I killed the steward guarding the door, used the vine as an arm to open it, and began my slaughter. The family's strongest weren't around—just a few Soul Elders and Soul Masters. I had only one ring but left no survivors. Their corpses became my nourishment!" Yue Zi's face twisted. This memory clearly struck a nerve.

"My soul power instantly reached peak Soul Elder. I took some family valuables and set off to uncover the mystery of my mother. Even now, I have no answers. When I became a Titled Douluo, I first sensed divine power. That power was incredible—even more addicting than murder." Yue Zi finished and looked at Gu You.

"You and I are chosen by the gods. I never intended to hurt anyone, but this world turned me into what I am. People like me aren't rare—those so-called 'evil Soul Masters' outside. They're horrible now, but can you say they were born that way? Join me. Let's become gods, share eternal life, destroy injustice, and uncover the truths we've both been denied."

To be honest, Gu You was a little moved. But he still shook his head.

"You're right, and I agree. But... what about the people you killed? I get killing evil people—but the innocent ones? Were they ever evil? Even if they were, who gave you the right to judge them? You and I may both be right, but our ideologies differ. Your childhood was evil, mine was bright. I've met countless good people, but also selfish scoundrels. So let me ask you—will you turn back? If I'm here, there's still a chance. I know the world's greatest healing Douluo, Holy Spirit Yali. I believe her Angelic martial soul can purify yours. That way, you won't be an evil Soul Master. As long as you do enough good, people won't blame you. After all, when good people do bad things, they're cursed for eternity. But when bad people do good... they're celebrated for generations."

"Haha! Honestly, talking with you is kind of fun. But... this still needs to be settled with a fight!!"
