Chapter 15
A series of urgent knocks sounded at the drawing room door.
“My lord, Lady Chloe,” came Gilles’s voice.
Viscount Verdier and Chloe looked up, exchanging worried glances.
“What is it, Gilles?” the Viscount inquired.
“Lady Alice has disappeared.”
“What on earth do you mean by that? How could she disappear?” The Viscount’s brow furrowed in deep concern as he swiftly rose from his seat.
Gilles stepped closer, holding out a folded letter. “I found this in Lady Alice’s room.”
“Let me see that.”
Chloe’s heart raced as she observed her father’s trembling hands. She silently prayed that her premonition was wrong. Surely, Alice would never do such a thing. Rising from her own seat, Chloe joined her father to peruse the contents of the letter.
