Chapter 28
Chloe held Damien’s gaze in tense silence, her eyes brimming with a mixture of resentment and trepidation. He appeared to derive pleasure from her discomfort.
“It appears you have failed to comprehend my instructions,” Damien’s voice sliced through the air, cold as the frost of winter. “In my absence, you bear the same duties and privileges as I do. To sit here consuming such inedible scraps is an insult to my name. You may be from a humble noble family, but this much should be common sense, especially given your choice to bear the name of Thisse.”
As Damien's acerbic words hung in the air, both Priscilla and the servants shared uneasy expressions. While it was the blameless Chloe who bore the brunt of his verbal onslaught, they understood the precariousness of their positions and dared not utter a word.
