Chapter 8
A flush of warmth surged up Chloe’s neck. If given the chance to turn back time, she would have refrained from suggesting that the Duke replace her cane. She was disturbed by his nonchalant use of “our” when referring to their agreement, as though they were inextricably bound.
“Unless you are going to give me a new cane, please give that one back,” she said.
“Don’t worry. You’ll get it back in due time.”
Her heart drummed against her ribcage. The Duke was gazing directly into her eyes, the corners of his lips pulling up into a smile.
“It seems that finding your sister ought to be our immediate concern.”
The implication was unmistakable. Now that Prince Johannes was aware of Alice’s existence, Chloe might need to introduce her to him.
“It would be no good if she were inebriated and indisposed yet again, would it?” The Duke’s pointed remark made Chloe’s eyes quiver. He extended his arm, still holding her cane in his hand. “Come.”
“Where are we going?”
