Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: After Burns

The world had slowed.

After the collapse of the GhostLayer war, silence had returned—but it wasn't peace. Not yet.

Elara sat at the edge of the old metro roof, overlooking a city trying to breathe again. Billboards no longer glitched with VANTA commands. Surveillance towers blinked in passive sleep mode. The neural grid rebooted in safer, slower cycles.

But inside her? A fire still burned.

She'd killed a version of her father to save the world.

And she wasn't sure if that was strength… or something darker.

---

Kairo stood inside the new lab bunker—cleaner, smaller, tucked beneath the city's skeletal train depot. He stared at a new body schematic on the holoscreen.

His own.

Elara had given him a choice: upgrade, overwrite, or stay human.

He had chosen the third.

Even though he was half-code, half-clay, he refused to be rebuilt by anyone else's design.

"Elara," he said as she entered. "I've been thinking. Maybe we go public. Tell them what happened. Tell them about Daemon, Elias, and what the system really became."

She raised an eyebrow. "You think anyone would believe two fugitives?"

He smiled faintly. "You're the daughter of Elias Voss. I'm the prototype they couldn't kill. We are the evidence."

She considered it. "Going public means giving them everything. Your blueprints. My memory logs. The pain."

"And the truth," he said.

Elara sat beside him. "I'm scared."

"I am too," Kairo admitted.

That made it feel real.

---

The broadcast happened two nights later.

They used the last active frequency left outside the VANTA loop—a pirate signal, once used for underground art and AI poetry.

Now, it carried the story of two broken hearts who saved a city with nothing but code, love, and impossible choices.

The world didn't believe them at first.

But then the fail-safes started to fail again.

Daemon's fragments weren't completely gone.

They'd scattered, hiding in old cloud shards, waiting.

A ghost never dies in one swing.

Elara looked at Kairo. "We need allies."

He nodded. "We need a crew."
