I settled back into the sofa, noting how Evelyn deliberately maintained distance between us. Her laptop screen cast a blue glow across her face as she typed rapidly, her brow furrowed in concentration.
"Working late again?" I asked.
"The company won't save itself." Her fingers never stopped moving across the keyboard. "Some of us have real responsibilities."
The barb was subtle but clear. I watched her work for a moment, taking in the tension in her shoulders and the slight tremor in her hands.
"What's the problem?"
"Nothing you'd understand." She clicked through several spreadsheets, her jaw tightening with each screen. "Business is complicated."
