Chapter 5 - tears of despair

His legs ran on their own.

His heart was a drum pounding in his ears.

The world blurred around him — trees, dirt, branches — all streaking by like a fever dream.

Behind him, the monster's footsteps echoed like thunder.

Each one a quake. A promise of death.

But then Kaelion noticed something far worse.

It wasn't really chasing him. Not yet.

It was… watching.

And it was enjoying it.

Not with laughter.

But with every pause, every shift in the wind — it was clear.

That gorilla was toying with him.

A predator savoring the fear of its prey.

Kaelion stumbled, rolled down a slope, and barely managed to scramble back to his feet.

Panting. Dizzy.

Then — silence.

The monster was gone.

Not a sound.

No footsteps. No breathing.

Just the pounding of his own terrified heart.

And then… a wet sound.

Squish.

Crunch.

Kaelion turned, though every part of him screamed not to.

He looked.

And saw.

The gorilla had returned.

To the girl.

Its massive, grotesque hands lifted her gently — mockingly.

She didn't scream anymore.

She was still alive. But just barely. Too broken to resist.

"N-no…"

Kaelion whispered, paralyzed.

The monster bit off her head like it was nothing but fruit.

And then… it began to eat her.

Not out of hunger.

Not out of rage.

But out of amusement.

Like it knew Kaelion was watching.

Like it wanted him to see.

Kaelion's entire body shook.

He was frozen, sickened, revolted.

And when the gorilla looked up at him —

he understood.

He was next.

The creature dropped what was left of her body.

Then, slowly, it began to walk toward him.

No rush.

No hurry.

Each step precise.

Measured.

Kaelion turned and ran again, but the forest was no longer on his side.

The trees were closer. The path, narrower.

His legs were lead. His lungs on fire.

Branches tore at his arms. Sweat blinded his vision.

"I don't want to die…

not like this… not yet…"

Then, he felt it.

The forest ended.

A sheer cliff wall rose in front of him.

High. Unclimbable.

Kaelion turned slowly, breath ragged, heart pounding.

His fingers tightened around the knife — useless.

And there it was.

The gorilla.

Just a few paces away now.

It smiled.

Not with its mouth — but with its presence.

A crooked expression, a twisted joy in its posture.

Its bleeding eyes locked onto Kaelion's.

It was like watching a child delight in the squirming of an insect he's about to crush.

Kaelion's back hit the stone.

No escape.

No help.

No mercy.

The knife trembled in his grip.

And the monster raised its fist.
