Chapter 7 - Molten red eyes

As Eve entered her room, she leaned against the door and closed her eyes for a couple of seconds to calm her nerves. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. She then opened her eyes to take in the space that will be her home for the next three years.

Pushing herself off the door she stepped further into the room, she noticed a medium size room with thick red velvet curtains framing a large window that overlooked the hill. A neatly made queen size wooden bed against the wall Above it, a chandelier hung from the ceiling. A fireplace in front of the bed, unused since the weather was warm and didn't require it. A study table and a wardrobe were at the side of the room, along with an attached bathroom to take care of her daily needs.

Surprisingly, her luggage was already in her room before she had even arrived. She assumed it had to be a vampire thing to be this quick. Glancing at the comfortable bed again she walked over and laid down, intending to rest her eyes only for a couple of minutes.

But all the traveling had worn her out more than she expected and before she knew it, she had drifted off to dreamland

At first, it was only a whisper "Lai...ra..." soft and distant, echoing through a thick fog that surrounded her. She looked around trying to see past the fog.

"Who?... Who is it?" she called out, straining her eyes to see through the haze.

Then she heard it again, a little clearer this time. "So...lai...ra..." A low but deep soothing voice filled with so much longing that it shook her from inside.

Suddenly the wind picked up and she raised her hands to shield her face. Still wanting to see the owner of the voice that carried such longing, she lowered her hands, her eyes widened in awe and disbelief. Through the haze of fog stood a silhouette of a tall man. His features were obscured by fog, but one thing stood out, his deep molten red eyes that looked into her eyes as if staring right through her soul. As if he has known her forever.

She gasped softly "K..ai!" Her voice cracked with unknown emotions.

Evelyn's eyes snapped open, her body covered in cold sweat with her breathing erratic. She touched her cheek only to find tears freely streaming down her face like rain drops. Her senses felt too overwhelmed to think clearly. Wiping her tears she took a couple of deep breaths to calm her down.

"What was that?" she whispered. "Those eyes, who was he?" she wondered.

"Kai?" Evelyn whispered again and then frowned in confusion when her heart skipped a beat at the name she just whispered. She didn't know anyone with that name, or any man with red eyes in general. It was a mystery as to why she blurted out that name in the first place.

Before she could dwell on her dream any further, her eyes caught her amber locket glowing slightly for a few seconds before fading back to normal.

She touched it and it felt warm. She released another shaky breath "What does this mean?" she asked while shifting her gaze outside the window to notice it was already dark outside. 'Just how many hours have I been asleep for' she wondered.

As if on cue her stomach growled "Right, I need to eat something" she mumbled while trying to rub her stomach to appease it.

After freshening up, she wore a clean white gown with long sleeves and intricate thread work all over it. It hugged her curvy body perfectly till her bottom and flowed freely covering her feet. Even in a simple dress she looked otherworldly.

Stepping out of the room she crossed the courtyard in the hopes to find somebody to guide her to the dining hall. 'Somebody who wouldn't turn her into dinner' she grumbled inwardly.

When she was almost at the end of another side of the courtyard, she heard a rustle behind her, near the bushes. She stopped in her tracks and turned to scan her surroundings briefly. There was no one in sight at this time of the night. She was about to walk when she heard a light growl.

Evelyn took a step back slowly at first but when she heard another rustle in one of the bushes. She took a hold of the front of her dress, turning around, she sprinted with all her might. As she ran, her heart thudded at an abnormal rate. Had she been a normal human, she was certain she would've had a heart attack by now.

She continued running as if being chased by a mad dog. As she was reaching the end of the corridor she turned her head around briefly to see if something was still following her when she crashed against a hard wall. She stumbled backward from the collision and was about to fall when a strong arm gripped her waist and pulled her against it to steady her.

Evelyn winced as pain shot through her cheek with her ears ringing. Her breathing was harsh which she struggled to stabilize. When her senses slowly returned, she felt her hand clutching something like a smooth fabric.

Evelyn opened her eyes and slowly lifted her head to feel a warm breath brush against her lips. Her eyes slowly widening as she found herself gazing into the same molten red eyes she had a dream not too long ago.
