Chapter 631 - 630. Money Above All.

For someone who had just personally come to understand the world they lived in, suddenly seeing their own teacher being surrounded and beaten by a group of thugs in a parallel universe gave Petra an unreal feeling.

In her heart, although Wolverine was sometimes unreliable and often caused all kinds of trouble, when it really mattered, he never let anyone down—he always charged ahead on the front lines.

She had never seen him like this before.

But she also knew this wasn't the time to hesitate. After hearing Alex's words, Petra charged forward without hesitation.

"Hey!"

The thugs attacking Old Man Logan were startled by the sudden female voice. When they turned around, they saw a woman rushing at them.

Petra punched the man closest to her in the face and immediately followed up with a sweeping leg kick, knocking him down before he could react.

Another thug quickly aimed his gun at Petra, but before he could pull the trigger, Logan slashed the shotgun to pieces with one swipe of his claw.

Due to his age and physical condition, Logan couldn't fight at full strength like he used to. But with Petra joining the fight and sharing the pressure, Logan's fighting spirit flared up again.

He grabbed a thug who was trying to escape, threw him to the ground, and raked multiple claws across his back, leaving countless holes. The thug's spine and internal organs were turned into mush.

The remaining thugs, seeing this, quickly lost their will to fight. They dropped their weapons and ran screaming toward their trailer.

At this moment, Alex slowly stepped forward, watching as they climbed into the vehicles, and said,"Don't let them get away."

"Understood."

Hearing this, Petra no longer held back her mutant abilities.

Before, without Alex's permission, she had suppressed her powers. After all, this world was strange to her, and she feared triggering detection by the Sentinel robots.

But now, following Alex's command, Petra suddenly unleashed her power. She stretched out her hand toward the trailer and clenched it tightly.

Still dazed, Wolverine didn't understand what was happening. He looked strangely at Petra and Alex, confused why they were helping him.

The next moment, cracks suddenly appeared on the gravel road beneath the thugs' trailer. The ground seemed to open like a huge mouth and swallowed it whole.

Seeing this, Logan was stunned, staring at Petra in disbelief.

For a brief instant, a faint light flickered in Logan's eyes, but it quickly disappeared as he forced himself to suppress it.

He quickly looked away and muttered a curse under his breath before turning and climbing into his luxury car.

He inserted the key and pulled the handbrake in one smooth motion. Just as he was about to step on the gas, he suddenly heard the rear passenger door open.

Through the rearview mirror, he saw that the unfamiliar man and woman had actually gotten into his car.

"I thought this was a Cadillac—looks just like one, or maybe a stretched Lincoln. Guess I was wrong on both counts."

Hearing the man's overly familiar voice, Logan frowned and turned his head.

"Get the hell out of here!"

But Petra seemed not to hear Logan's order to get out and anxiously asked,"Logan, what's going on? What happened?"

Looking at Petra's face, Logan hesitated. Though he didn't know this woman, what he'd just witnessed confirmed her identity—she was a mutant, just like him.

After a moment of silence, Logan shook his dizzy head and coldly said, "You've got the wrong person. Now get out, don't bring trouble on yourself."

"I couldn't have the wrong person. Logan, I know it's you, even though you've changed a lot."

Petra's feelings were complicated as she looked at Logan's current appearance.

In her memory, Logan was handsome and strong, albeit a bit scruffy, but he always kept his beard well groomed.

Now, Logan had white hair, and his face was full of fatigue and wrinkles—a truly aged and worn look.

Just as Petra was about to say more, Alex put a hand on her shoulder.

Watching the elderly Logan carefully, Alex quickly examined his condition.

"Logan, we are not your enemies. You have to believe we can help you."

"Right now, getting out of my car and pretending you never saw me is the best help you can give," Logan said coldly, his tone harsh.

"I know what you're worried about, but rest assured, we can protect ourselves. Even if those people come after us, we can keep safe."

After learning the situation here, Alex clearly understood who would come looking for Logan next.

Unlike the parallel universe where Petra came from, mutants and humans in this world had not experienced intense conflict, and there were no deadly machines like the Sentinel robots here.

The human side handled mutants very covertly. They used genetically modified food—like Red Skull did in the Wasteland universe—to suppress the mutant genes within human DNA through everyday meals.

Because of this, no new mutants had been born in this world for decades, and the older generation of mutants was slowly being phased out over time, just like Wolverine at this moment.

"Guarantee safety."

Logan sneered coldly, his eyes dangerously fixed on Alex.

"Listen, kid, I don't need your help. Don't give me any of your damn philosophies. I'm retired, got it? I'm just an ordinary rideshare driver now, nothing more."

"Is that so? But the adamantium in your body is constantly corroding you—is that fake too?" Alex crossed his arms.

"What?!"

Before Logan could say anything, Petra couldn't help but exclaim.

Wolverine's healing factor should be invincible; no matter what injuries he suffers, he always recovers completely. Petra had never heard of Logan being in life-threatening danger because of the metal in his body.

Alex glanced at Petra and spoke softly, "The food here is specifically designed to target mutant genes. Not only does it suppress the birth of mutants, it also severely affects existing mutants."

These words were both an explanation to Petra and something Logan probably didn't know. Even when the X-Men were wiped out, no one had discovered this truth.

It made sense—while the X-Men had been busy fighting for peace, they never had time to consider whether their daily meals had been altered.

This genetically modified food acted quietly and subtly, and by the time mutants noticed, it was already too late.

Besides the human elite, no one knew this secret. Most ordinary people believed mutants were just a part of human evolution, and now those mutants had faded away.

After the preconceived notion that mutants were wiped out by natural disaster, no one doubted that the true reason for their disappearance was man-made.

Sure enough, after hearing Alex's words, the old Logan's expression changed. Although he tried hard to suppress his unrest, Alex noticed it.

Seizing the moment, Alex reached out and pulled out a shiny gold bar. "Give me a chance, okay, Logan? Just think of it as a chance for yourself. Now we're all in the same boat."

Looking at the gold bar in Alex's hand, Logan's initial hostility slowly faded.

Alex clearly understood what Logan needed right now. To protect Professor Charles Xavier, who was sick, Logan had rented this luxury car and worked as a taxi driver for years, saving money. Besides buying medicine for Charles, he hoped to save enough to rent a whole ship.

Staying in this country any longer was no longer safe. Logan just wanted to leave as soon as possible and create a relatively peaceful home for Charles and himself, so they could enjoy their later years in peace.

And to achieve that, money was absolutely essential.

Although Alex could have easily opened a portal to take them anywhere in this world, he understood that Logan was like a wounded beast right now. Until he trusted Alex, any move might trigger his stress and reaction.

"I don't know how gold is valued here, but in some ways, it's still hard currency, right?"

Alex smiled and took out another gold bar.

"You just saw what this girl's abilities are. She's not just someone who can control stone and soil — with the right materials, Petra can literally turn stone into gold."

Looking at those two gold bars, old Logan's breathing became heavy. He stared fixedly at the gold and said, "If anyone finds out about this, it's a death sentence."

"Don't worry, no one will find out," Alex said with a slight smirk. "Besides, by the time they find out, you should already be in a safe place."

Taking a deep breath, Logan's heart was extremely unsettled. He wanted to kick the two off his car. After all, he already had a plan, and soon he would have saved enough to rent a ship.

He had no desire now to risk everything and break his original plan.

But looking at the gold, old Logan couldn't help but be moved. If he could get these gold bars, he could leave this broken place with Charles and live a better life.

"Please, I just want some information," Alex pressed on.

Old Logan closed his eyes slightly and stayed silent for a long time, then finally sighed quietly.

Turning back to face forward, he gripped the steering wheel tightly and pressed the accelerator. The luxury car sped onto the road and moved quickly forward.

After driving for more than ten minutes, as darkness enveloped the surroundings, old Logan finally asked in a hoarse voice,"Alright, what do you want to know?"
