It was a bright morning, the sunlight scorched on my skin. My eyes were watery, and I couldn't see so well.
With all my strength I got up from the soft and warm ground. My arms are feeling very heavy, my legs are wobbly.
It's been a few days since I took a long walk alone, regretful is all I can say. I don't know if I have any family members left, I have no money on me.
"I'm all out of luck, I'm all alone in this field of green grass." I said with a raspy voice, I haven't drank in a long time.
I then stopped on my track, "Was it yesterday that I last drank or was it two days ago?" I thought to myself.
I have no more family, I am a lonely man who is wondering alone. I continued to walk forward, I walked without direction hoping to find a place.
I don't like speaking about my family or my origins. Whenever I meet new people they always ask about myself, but I can't tell them. I never can, and never would have said anything about my past.
I kept on walking on the hot day, my body is sweating and my vision is blurry.
It's been almost three days since I first left that town, three days since I last saw someone. "Is this the end of my life? Am I going to perish alone with out anyone remembering me?" I asked myself as I kept on walking.
I am a beggar, whenever I meet people I beg for shelter. I beg for food, I beg for water, I'm a begged and nothing else.
I then lifted my left hand up to my face, it's thin and weak. I can clearly see my bones, and my body is dying.
My stomach growls again for the fifth time if I kept count. My stomach is empty, and I'm skinny. I'm so skinny that the wind can blow me away.
"Hahahaha." I tried to laugh at my situation, but it felt more forced than genuine. I then sat down on the ground feeling defeated, I then closed my eyes accepting my faith.
"Hey sir, are you alright?" I heard a faint voice from afar, was it real or did I imagine it out of desperation? I opened my eyes and turned to where I heard the voice, and by luck, a man was approaching me.
"Are you awake? Can you hear me?" Said the man who begant or run towards me as I waved my hand to him.
"I'm awake…I'm alive." I said with a weakness in my voice. The man caught up to me, and was shocked by my appearance.
"Dear lord, you're malnourished." The man had an expression of concern, "Let me help you up… wow you're very light, I am going to help you." He then helped me walk.
I was so tired that I feel asleep. I don't remember the journey much, but I heard faith noises when I was waking up.
I opened my eyes slowly feeling the light hit my face. I looked around and saw many people surrounding me, the looked like farmers.
I can tell by the way that they were dressed, and by the place we were at. I could guess they were poor, not too poor but definitely poor.
For the next two months I was cared for by the people, they were all smiling at me. They talked to me with generosity in their mouth, and I couldn't help but smile whenever I saw them.
Was this luck? Did a higher being felt pity for me, and decided to help me out. That didn't bother me at all as their kindness to a stranger was admirable.
From this day forwards I'll vow to help out people like they have done to me. "I have a resolve." I said as an old lady was feeding me.
"Huh?" She was confused to what I just said, "You can talk properly, that great to hear. I'm glad that you're alright as I was worried that you might die soon." She said with a smile.
"My name, my name is Adam Ceborati ma'am." I said bowing to her. "The kindness of your people has given me hope. I want to return this favor back to the whole world."
"Oh don't say that, we only did what anyone would have." She said with a soft smile, her eyes were full of joy and sincere. "My name is Amelia, and I'm glad to hear that you have a good heart."
I then stood up from the bed, Amelia was surprised by how I regained my strength back already. "Wait! You still need to rest, don't make such sudden movements so quickly." She said but I didn't listen to her.
I walked out of the room that I was kept in, and walked straight outside. There I saw them, the people who all agreed to nurse me when they didn't have to.
I walked to the center and they all seemed to notice me. "Please…please let me stay here with you all." I said as I bowed to them putting my head to the ground. "Teach me how to farm, and I'll repay you all."
"Sure thing young man, but you must first rest so more. Whose to say that you aren't going to collapse again after not moving for two months." Said an older man.
….
Since that day forwards they taught me everything there is to know about farming. I noticed how compared to everyone else, I was tall. I am not the tallest man, but it was something that caught my eye quickly.
By the time I was under their care for the second year I was different. I wasn't skinny anymore, I was well fed, and thanks to the labor I grew some muscle.
One thing I noticed was the abundance of worms around the farms. Many farmers told me that they were pests who kept on eating the vegetation. For the first few months that's all I did, get rid of the worms.
After a few years I cultivated all the techniques the farmers knew. I would spend my nights studying to become more efficient. I am trying to make farming as efficient as possible so no one has to starve ever again.
As I kept on writing I remember the day I announced to the farmers my goal. I would repay them by inventing a new technology that can make farming easier for them.
If I make a new tool that can help out the older farmers, that would be enough for me. This tool should be able to make manual lager much easier on their body.
I stopped writing as my wrist was hurting. "Nothing, after all this time still nothing." I said as I looked around the room I was nursed in. It became my room, and around it was a bunch of paper I left around. They were all failures of prototypes that just didn't make sense.
I then heard a knock. "Adam, please go to sleep it's late already. You're loosing sleep by doing this, and we already appreciate your work." It was Amelia speaking to me, this was one of the rooms in her house.
"I understand your concern, but you all treated and nursed me at my lowest. You all never asked anything in return, and I can't let that slide. I want to help you all out like you did for me."
"Your kindness is very beautiful, I want to be as kind as you." I said to her, "I won't stop until I had helped everyone." I then stood up from my seat, I walked and open the door. I saw her smiling at me, she looked tired.
"Well I can't stop you if you're insisting so much, so make sure to do your best. No matter what you do we will always be proud of you." She said as she hugged me.
I hugged her back. "I won't fail you or anyone, I'll make this possible." I wanted to cry right then and there, but I couldn't as it would make her feel sad.
It was the next evening, and I was very lively that day. I kept on sketching the sickle, I knew there was someway to make it better but how?
Should I make it more curvy? Of course not, that's not possible. "Great" I said in frustration, the sickle was already well made, and I shouldn't bother fixing something basically perfect.
"Adam dear, can you please help me out a bit?" Said Amelia as she knocked on the door again. "I'm too old to be selling vegetables now, but it would be great if you did to for me."
"Yes I'm on it Miss." I said as I stood up again, my back hurts a bit as I did, and I put my left hand on my back.
I was now outside with a carriage in front of me, it was a bit old but still worked. "I'll do it, and I'll be back within a week." I said as I got on the carriage, I waved Amelia and I began this journey.
Of course I took my notebooks as I would be writing while traveling. The red notebook contains everything I was taught, and it's my most valuable item. My blue notebook were ideas I had to make farming efficient.
——
After traveling for three days I made it to a port, this is my chance. I parked nearby and, saw some merchants. I am going to sell them these vegetables and make a profit.
"It's nice to see new people form time to time." Said a guy who began to approach me, he was young and seemed around my age.
This man unbeknownst to me became my best friend. He would end up helping me out in more ways I could bet imagine. "My name is [] nice to meet you." Said [] as he extended his hand towards me.
I then shook his hand. "My name is Adam, and I have a feeling you will be a great friend." I said to him with a smile.
For the time I spend there we both became very close to each other. We were basically inseparable even when we only knew each other for less than a day.
"There is a district nearby, and you should go there. You seem like a very intelligent man and…wow that's very interesting." He said, as he began to flip through my blue notebook that I handed to him.
"I am flattered by your compliments, but I have other matters to attend to. I live in this small village." I said but I began to think a bit more, if I worked for the district then maybe I can help out more farmers that way.
"If I did, could I possibly help out more people than just what I am doing now? Hey! I'm asking for you opinion on this." I asked [].
"If only there were more people like you Adam, willing to help out others. You're an amazing person Adam, but it's naive to think everyone can be just like you." [] said.
"I don't think it's a bad dream as I also wish for that to happen as well. To think about how everyone can help each other." I said as I grabbed my notebook back.
It's been a full day since I stayed here. "Listen to me, I have to return now. I'm glad I meet someone as great as you." I said as I hugged [], he smiled at me and that smile was full of hope. It was majestic, and it made me feel as I was a special person.
"Give it a try, with your intelligence you can land a good job to finance your village." He said to me as I got on the carriage, he waved at me as I began to return back to my village.
I began to travel once again ready to return back to the people who gave me purpose. I couldn't help, but smile as I meet such an amazing person. "Luck truly is on my side." I said murmuring.
It's been a full day since I left, and I feel a bit tired. I would be lying if I said I didn't stay up late in order to return much sooner. My eyes felt heavy, and they were hurting. I made a mistake that I'm not proud of.
I then spot a town, "Maybe I should take a break for a while and rest for a bit. It wouldn't hurt anyone." I thought as I got closer to the town.
An officer got closer to Adam. "Stop right there sir, but you can't go pass this town at the moment." His face was serious, and he didn't look so happy at all.
"A village was hit by an earthquake, and it's terrible. I have never seen such damages before in my life." The officer said to me.
I was then anxious as in that direction the only village was the one I was living in. There is no way this is happening, did I do this by talking about my luck?
"Listen to me sir, almost everyone in that village died. We had some reports that only one person survived, and it was the one who reported it. We don't know where he went, but he just left after making that claim." The officer told me.
"There is no way, this can't be happening." I said with sadness as I began to tear up a bit, I covered my mouth with my hands. "No this can't be happening, this can't be happening."
"Hey sir, what's wrong? Did you have family in that village?" The officer asked me his expression chanced to one of concern as he tried to comfort me.
"No I'm not fine, I lived in that small village. Those people taught me something important, and I just can't accept this. They taught me something I can never forget." I said as I cried, they are dead.
"Oh my I'm so sorry, I didn't know you lived there." The officer told me as he took his hat off. "Listen to me, you can cry now as it's understandable. I won't stop you as you're in great pain, and I'll be here to help you."
As I heard those words I lifted my head, and looked at him straight to his eyes. "In that can I want you to help me get to the district of this area." The officer agreed, and decided to help me to get to this district.
———
After what seemed like an eternity I finally arrived at the district. By then I stopped crying, and I was mostly calm down. Thanks to the officer I got inside even without any form of identification.
I was told to go to this government facility, it had a name I refused to acknowledge even to this day. This facility would be detrimental to me, and would cause me everything.
I entered the tall, and very squared building, the inside was a bit cold and dark. To think the government would allow such a building was surprising to me, but I couldn't judge them.
"May I ask why is a citizen inside this building owned by the government?" Said a tall and bearded man. His voice sounded a bit too friendly, and his expression didn't match it at all.
The man approached me, and I knew he was just faking it to gain my trust. This is an insult as it's the complete opposite to what I was taught by the farmers.
I looked at him and gave him a smile, but I knew he was thinking of something. He must be up to something if he is lying to me already.
"Oh right, you're that new guy I was told about, that's my fault." He said as I don't know how he knew so fast. I just got here an hour ago, but there was already a report about me?
He told me his name, but after what he did to me in the future I stopped calling him by his name. For now I'll call him a government official or G.O for short.
"You need to take a citizenship test, and other things right now." G.O told me and I agreed with him as I needed citizenship. "That's great to know that you're being fully cooperative." He said to me as he began to walk.
I flowed behind him, and I could hear his footsteps loudly. The floor was made of some material I can't remember, but it was smooth and cold. He then brought me inside a room to take this test, or it seemed.
I looked around the room, and it was too small in my own opinion. I had a feeling we weren't alone. "I don't think we are alone, and this room is too small." I told him, his expression became bleak.
"It must be your mind playing tricks on you, you did experience a traumatic event recently. It makes sense for you to try to cope with it so I won't tell them this unless it becomes a problem." He told me as he made me take a seat on the middle of the room.
"Yeah I guess you're right, I'm not feeling so well." I said as he handed me a test, that was fast I thought to myself.
I took the test and by all means I don't mean to brag, but it was kind of easy. As I wrote the last sentence on my paper G.O looked surprised.
He grabbed the test and examined it for a bit. "You're the first person to finish this test this quickly. You might be a genius of some sort, you're very valuable, and you must work under us." He told me as he put the paper down. "Perfect score is all that there is to say about it."
