Chapter 38 - Chapter 36 She’s Someone Else’s Now

Ruby

I was at the farm with Adam. Some little shits were irritating us, so we had to teach them a lesson. Only my knuckles were bleeding—that's all. Now we were discussing our mafia business. Well, I was clearly not interested—because they aren't fun. Just little shits.

I was smoking my cigarette while Adam was driving. I told him to drop me at Aveline's place. After that, we left together for our work at Lune's foundation.

We went to her place. I was talking to Aveline, and she suddenly mentioned Kai Kang. She told me that she's going to confess.

But why did she tell me? That's not my problem... right?

After that talk—'cause I just wanted to know when her competition is—I already knew the date, not the timing. That's why. I don't know why, but my heart just... hurt at her words.

My blood boiled and I—

I couldn't even think straight.

I'm hurt.

I don't know why...

Why does it hurt?

I'm not in love with her, right?

I'm not in love...?

I can't be in love.

I just left.

After that, Adam asked me,

"Ruby, what's wrong? You're damn angry. Something's going on?"

He was clearly worried about me as he drove back to my villa.

"Hey Adam," I spoke, "tell me honestly. Am I in love with Aveline?

I can't be in love. Love is never meant for me. Well... me, Adam?"

He went silent—like he couldn't find the right words.

He finally sighed and said,

"Ruby, believe me or not—I can't tell you. Even if I did, you wouldn't understand. You still wouldn't convince yourself, even if I tried. The best option? Ask your heart. Only your heart can answer. Whether you're in love or not... only it knows.

Sometimes, waiting is more worth than rushing. Ruby, believe me. Just wait for the right moment."

I looked at him, emotionless.

But in my mind—I was just thinking about her.

I sighed.

I was tired.

Eventually, we reached my villa.

Adam and Luna were staying with me—Luna was already home.

I entered. The butler greeted us, and without another word, brought me my medicine for headaches. I didn't need to instruct him—he knows me.

We were drinking and smoking.

Then Luna mentioned,

"Ruby, are you still this stubborn?"

"What do you mean, Luna?"

"Ruby, look. We're your friends, okay? You're in pain. We can see that. Tell us—what's bothering our Ruby Daniel Sun, the fearless mafia?"

"Luna… I don't know anymore.

I'm just tired.

I don't want to think about it anymore.

Leave it."

I was smoking—this was the first time I'd smoked this much. Five cigarettes at a time.

I decided to paint something.

I did.

But I swear—I still ended up painting her.

Again.

And again.

Those blue eyes like the sea…

That rhythm…

That gaze…

I just can't stop thinking about her.

The next morning, we went to my company for meetings.

After I wrapped up, my assistant handed me my whole week's schedule.

Meetings.

Also one abroad—on the 20th.

Same day as her competition.

I told my assistant after some work, we'll leave directly for abroad.

Well—I'm her dance partner.

I'm ready to dance with her.

But her mother is the problem.

I don't know why she's so against dancing—it's her daughter's passion. At least let her live her damn life.

On 25th July—it's her birthday.

Don't ask me how I remember.

I don't even know.

But yeah, I'm going to her birthday party. Whatever.

I guess I should buy a dog for myself.

This villa is too empty.

What about:

Pitbull?

Husky?

Golden Retriever?

French Bulldog?

German Shepherd?

Well, there are lots. Let's see.

I sketched a husky. I saw a lot of pictures so I could easily draw him.

But even while sketching him…

I sketched her again.

Playing with the husky.

Smiling.

Running.

Happy.

Why can't I think about anything else?

Why do I always end up… here?

While I was thinking, Luna entered my room.

She saw the portraits of Aveline and all the sketches of her.

"Wow. You were stalking her, Ruby?"

"Shut the fuck up, Luna."

I just... don't know why I can't paint or draw anything else.

Just her.

I'm stuck, Luna.

She patted my shoulder and said,

"Once you fall in love with someone, you just can't think about anyone else but that person."

"We always warned you not to make fun of love…

Now look at you.

Love's making fun of you."

"Ruby—you used to say:

'Love is useless. Just a drama.

Love never exists in this world.

Why would you kill yourself for someone?'

You never believed in love."

"Believe me—you're in love.

Just admit it, Ruby Daniel Sun.

Before it's too late."

Yeah.

I did say all those things.

I didn't have faith in love.

But now…

Why am I falling harder and harder?

I rubbed my temples and nodded.

She was just looking at those portraits again.

"Look… you even paint her more beautifully every time.

You never liked drawing anyone. But her…

You paint her unconsciously.

And still, you say you're not in love?"

"…I don't know, Luna.

I fucking don't know anything."

"You will.

Later, you will know everything, Ruby.

Just wait for the right moment."

She left.

Her words.

Adam's words.

They're the same.

They know something.

They've already figured it out.

But I…

I can't.

I don't know why.

But I just…

Can't.
