Blackspire never slept.
Even at midnight, forges burned, steel clanged, and whispers filled the corridors like wind slipping through cracks. Since the Queen's decree, the fortress had shifted from a stronghold into a war engine.
Seraphina stood on the eastern balcony, overlooking the fortress walls. Below, soldiers trained by torchlight. Archers practiced rapid fire. Engineers worked tirelessly on flame-warded ballistae.
Beside her, Kaelrith unfolded a new dispatch from the scouts.
"Three days out," he said. "A royal convoy. Ten wagons. Thirty mounted guards. At least one high mage."
"Too slow to be an elite kill team," Seraphina murmured. "Too fast to be ceremonial. They're bringing someone important."
Kaelrith's eyes narrowed. "A diplomat?"
"Or a trap."
She looked down at the training yard, where Liliana stood with her fire tutor, flames dancing harmlessly around her fingers. The girl laughed—carefree, innocent.
Seraphina gripped the railing until her knuckles whitened.
> "They will not take her. Not alive. Not ever."

Far beyond the Black Mountains, Prince Caelan rode with a hood over his face and a sword at his hip. He had left the palace through a servant tunnel known only to him and his late brother—the one who'd died protecting Seraphina during the palace purge.
The same purge the Queen had ordered.
The same purge that had haunted Caelan for seventeen years.
He knew where he was going: Blackspire.
But he didn't yet know why.
Part of him wanted answers. Part of him wanted to meet this girl—this "Liliana of Flame." And another part… the most dangerous part… wanted to see Seraphina again.
To ask her the question that had tormented him since the ball:
> Were you the one I was meant to marry?
He spurred his horse forward, heart heavy with secrets.
---
Back at Blackspire, Seraphina summoned her council.
The room was dark, lit only by a single crystal orb in the center of the war table. Around her sat her generals—former exiles, rogue mages, disgraced knights. People the Queen had tried to erase.
People Seraphina had given purpose.
"The capital sends a convoy," she began, voice sharp. "But not a full army. Which means one of three things: diplomacy, betrayal… or bait."
General Ivar, her spymaster, scowled. "If it's a trap, we strike first. Ambush in the Black Hollow."
"No," Seraphina said. "We don't risk exposing our location. Not until we're ready."
A red-haired mage named Vex leaned forward. "Then what do we do?"
Seraphina's eyes glittered.
"We let them in."
---
That night, Seraphina met Liliana in the hidden library beneath the citadel. The girl sat cross-legged on a rug, reading from an old book on phoenix myths. She looked up as Seraphina entered.
"Are they really coming for me?"
"Yes," Seraphina said gently. "But we're stronger than they think."
Liliana hesitated. "What if I hurt someone again?"
"You won't," Seraphina said. "Because this time, you'll choose who you fight for."
Liliana looked down at her hands. They were still a little scorched.
"Do you… ever wish you hadn't become the villain?"
Seraphina blinked.
Then she sat beside her and said, softly, "Every day. But I would still choose this path—again and again—if it meant you survived."
Liliana leaned into her.
"You're not a villain. You're my mom."
Seraphina swallowed hard.
And smiled.

The next morning, the convoy arrived.
Just outside Blackspire's outer gate, under the flag of truce.
Kaelrith stood on the wall with a spyglass, scowling.
"There's a royal seal. White stag on black. That's Prince Caelan's crest."
Seraphina's heart skipped.
She took the glass and looked for herself.
And there he was—dismounted, standing in front of his men, sword sheathed, arms visible to prove he bore no enchantments.
He looked taller than she remembered. Sharper. Sadder.
She handed the glass back to Kaelrith, her voice calm.
> "Open the gates. Let him in."
Kaelrith frowned. "You trust him?"
"No," Seraphina said. "But I trust the part of him that's still looking for the truth."
---
Prince Caelan was brought to the inner courtyard without chains, though he was watched by six guards at all times. He carried no visible weapons.
When Seraphina emerged from the shadows, cloaked in black and red, the guards tensed. But the prince only smiled faintly.
"You haven't changed," he said.
Seraphina stopped several paces away.
"You have."
He nodded. "I had to."
There was a long silence between them.
Finally, she asked, "Why are you here?"
Caelan looked at her. Really looked.
And said, "To know if my mother is the only liar in this kingdom."
Seraphina arched an eyebrow. "And if she's not?"
"Then I want to know if there's still time to stop her."

Later that evening, Seraphina led Caelan to the observation balcony where Liliana practiced her spells. The child stood in a ring of fire, giggling as magical butterflies made of flame danced around her.
Caelan watched in silence, his expression unreadable.
"She doesn't know who I am, does she?" he asked quietly.
"No," Seraphina replied. "Only that you're someone worth watching."
He turned to her.
"You saved her life. Trained her. Hid her. That makes you dangerous."
"Everything I've done," Seraphina said, "was because your mother made me the villain."
"And yet… I'm standing here," he murmured.
She met his gaze.
"And what do you see, Caelan? A traitor? A mother? A threat?"
He looked back down at Liliana.
And answered, "I see a future worth fighting for."
