Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Shane Drops Her Off

Shayla tenses up when she hears Shane's words.

"And what's that?" She asked.

"You'll be under 24/7 protection, I hope this is fine with you," Shane replied.

Shayla's heart skipped several beats, and she was quiet for a while as she weighed her chances. Even if she followed her brother's choice, she would still be watched by his guards.

She would rather stay in the country with Camille, than start all over in an unknown country.

"I agree," she nodded, accepting Shane's condition.

Shane looked at her with his sharp eyes, and he shook his head.

'Maybe this is for the best, I can keep watch over her this way,' he thought to himself while looking out the window.

Camille, on the other hand, finally unplugged her earphones when she noticed that they were done with their discussion.

She turned to look at Shayla with a questioning look in her eyes, and the latter nodded excitedly.

"Yes!" Camille exclaimed excitedly which got Shane's attention.

He turned to look at her with a tilt of his head, and she chuckled awkwardly.

"I was just excited. Thank you, Mr. Lockwood," Camille thanked him profusely, and he gave a wave of dismissal with his hands.

"Uhm sir, I think it is best for you to drop me here, I need to return home or my brothers would be worried about me," Camille suggested, finally realising that they were not heading to her home.

"Address," Shane muttered, ignoring her previous words.

"Huh?" Camille replied with a look of confusion.

Shayla was the one who nudged her as she whispered to her, "brother wants to drop you off at home, so he needs your address."

"Ohh," Camille drew out, giving him the address instantly.

"Did you hear that?" Shane asked, his question was directed to the driver.

"Loud and clear, Boss," the driver replied, and before Camille knew it, the car changed routes. They were truly heading to her house.

All of a sudden, she frowned.

Ethan and Asher had warned her to stay away from Shane claiming he was dangerous, and while she hadn't seen any signs of danger from him, she subconsciously wanted to listen to her brothers.

Even if Shane hadn't hurt her, the weight of Ethan's warning clung to her thoughts like smoke. Was she being foolish? Or was this simply her heart choosing peace over paranoia?

She could only sigh and pray that the two were not home, or there could be a confrontation between the three men.

From what she had noticed, Ethan could not stand Shane.

"What are you thinking about?" Shayla snapped her fingers in front of Camille which caused her to snap out of her thoughts.

"Nothing much, I was just thinking of what would happen when the results would finally be released," Camille replied with a smile.

Shane turned his attention to her when he heard her words.

"Are the both of you vying for the same university?" He asked, and Shayla nodded.

"This is the reason she wanted to speak to you and talk you out of sending me abroad, we've made a promise to each other that we would attend the same university," Shayla answered with a smile.

"Hmm," Shane hummed, and didn't speak anymore.

"Your brother is so weird," Camille whispered into Shayla's ears.

It felt like every time she met Shane, he would always show her a different version of himself.

"That's because you've not spent enough time with him, but you need to tell me something, how did you meet my brother?" Shayla asked inquisitively.

"It is a long story," Camille sighed, unable to visit memories of how she acted when she first met Shane.

"I believe you can summarise it, come on, tell me," Shayla pleaded, pouting her lips for extra effect.

Camille giggled, and finally told Shayla about everything.

After she was done, Shayla turned to look at her brother who was not paying attention to them with a wide mouth.

While both girls weren't looking, Shane's gaze flickered briefly to Camille in the rearview mirror. He said nothing, but the tightness in his jaw betrayed him.

"Why do you have your jaw dropped that way?" Camille inquired.

"I'm surprised, it is so unlike my brother to take responsibility for a mistake that wasn't his, he would rather make people take responsibility for their actions," Shayla replied with a thoughtful expression on her face.

"Perhaps, he was in a good mood then," Camille replied with a shrug of her shoulders.

Not like she cared anyway. She even felt more at peace knowing that Shane took care of it. And the car had even returned in the past week looking brand new, better than how it looked when the driver picked her up that fateful day.

"Perhaps, have you heard the latest news about Lydia?" Shayla questioned, changing the topic immediately.

The two ladies began to gossip about their classmates. It was majorly Shayla doing the speaking while Camille threw in a few words.

And although their voices were hushed whispers, Shane was able to listen to what they were talking about, and the corner of his lips raised which was a rare sight.

'Perhaps it isn't such a bad idea to let her school in her home country, she is happy with her friend, I can only tighten the security around her so that my enemies won't be able to get close to her,' Shane thought to himself as he watched the two girls discuss among themselves.

After a while, the car finally pulled up at the Leroy's Estate. Camille got off the car, and signalled for the car's window to be wound down.

"Thank you for dropping me off," she thanked him with a deep bow.

Shane acknowledged her with a nod while Shayla giggled.

"We'll talk later, okay?" Shayla said, and Camille smiled in return.

"Bye," Shayla waved, and the car exited the estate instantly.

Taking a deep breath, Camille walked in, only to be stopped by Asher.

She stopped abruptly as she was faced with Asher's questioning look.

"What's up with you?" She carefully asked.

"Who was the one who dropped you off?" Asher questioned her.

Camille looked at him, and she answered, "trust me, you don't want to know."

"Do you have a boyfriend already? Was it your boyfriend who dropped you off? Tell me, because if I find out you have a boyfriend, I will chop his legs off," Asher demanded as he followed Camille who wasn't willing to trade words with him.

Camille didn't bother to give him a reply as she listened to him rant.

"You don't want to give me a reply, fine. You seem to be forgetting that the porch has cameras, I can easily find out who dropped you off," Asher smiled before walking off.

Camille stopped in her tracks before turning to look at him, "trust me, you wouldn't want to know."

She smiled before walking to her room. Asher looked at her retreating figure, and he suddenly had a bad feeling.
